Help a teen with limited budget to choose a good camera

Hackable is for people with cell phone cameras.
Canon cameras may have some good hacks, but I haven't seen any additions that benefit learning photography.
Remember KISS (Keep It Simple Silly).

Get a workable cheap camera (any brand).
Learn the basics.
Take some good photos.
Learn good business practices and how to deal with people.
Make money and buy a better camera.
Determine if the cameras by that time make it necessary to add silly hacks.

K-1 tethering options

If you don't need control of the camera, I did write a Python app that will do wireless transfer to your desktop. (so you do need Python programming language installed if it doesn't come on your computer by default)

You can then do what you want with the images. One workflow would be to have LR auto-import from that folder.
a.k.a for those who used to have EyeFi cards.

It is slow since the K1 wifi is horrible, but it works *much more reliably* than the USB tethering if you don't require control from the desktop. Plus no wires to trip over.
I use this at events where I shoot upwards of 1000 photos during the day. Lower resolution JPGs are sent over wireless in about 3-5 seconds.

You can find the app on GitHub. There is a version for the K1 built-in WiFi, as well as the FluCard for other cameras which otherwise also does not allow direct and constant download to the desktop.

GitHub - amoringello/FluCardPro-AutoImport: Auto Import photos from the K1 or the Ricoh FluCard Pro-1. Requires Python 2.7 with 'requests' module.

Your Ricoh / Pentax product developed a fault, and you've lost faith in the brand...

Simple? Do you intend to make those who have had troubles sound like idiots? That's how it comes across.
Have you had to deal with Pentax warranty service within the past 15 years?

Regardless of coverage under warranty; you still have to pay for shipping and insurance (or gamble on damage being turned around as "your fault").
When you need to send your same item in for repair four times, then send it off to Ricoh, that gambling money ads up.... A lot.
The time waiting for repair, as long as 5 months, multiplied by three to five trips... the last potentially waiting for shipment out to Japan and back, the expense of rentals, or buying new equipment outright, goes up enormously.

Pentax KP with Elinchrom D-lite/ El Skyport Eco dosn't trigger quicker than 1/160

hehe, didn't think of that. Good catch on the details. I'm already used to 1/200 with the K1 as being "normal".
All Pentax cameras (at least the digital ones) are hard wired to disable the non-PTTL flash pin when shutter speed is faster than the sync speed.

Yeah, years ago they used to advertise a sync speed of up to 1/1000s. I wrote to their customer support repeatedly. Finally got one of their technical engineers who agreed their calculations were off. 1/125 to 1/160 range was the fastest one could reliably get their triggers to work.
In most cases the lower shutter speed won't matter... but when it does, you're just out of luck.

Have to second the choice for Peak Design. The whole system is thought out to be strong and versatile. i.e. you don't need to remove or move parts to be able to put your camera on a tripod.
I've had a couple of the loops (look like string but really tough) on my camera for a few years now, and just thinking about replacing the oldest of them.
The newer loops are made better, but I have not had the need to replace one yet.
I am also out in the rain, snow and sun a lot, so they hold up really well.

16GB should be fine, although if you do use LR & PS at the same type and tend to work on larger projects, 16GB is gonna be on the small side.
I have 64GB, but struggle to make the computer use more than 32GB even with PS and Lightroom running at the same time... except on my larger projects.

If you are not running out of RAM, an SSD won't make much of a difference other than initial loading.

Using ND filters

Get exposure without ND. Put on the ND and adjust your exposure to compensate.
You can use manual mode.

Or just leave in Av mode and let the camera set the exposure for you.
In Live view, the K1 does a great job at allowing you to see the image on the screen. Much better than you might be able to do through the viewfinder even with a 10-Stop ND filter.
Also works great when you have screw-on filters and worry about bumping the focus.

---------- Post added 09-08-18 at 01:50 PM ----------

FYI, if you're ND is so dark you're getting exposures beyond 30 seconds, put in Bulb mode and hit the Green button.
This changes from normal bulb mode, that stays open as long as you hold the button, into a long-timer mode that can be set up to 20 minutes.

need watermark app for free

There are other reasons for watermarking, such as simply making it easier for people to know who's work it is, so they can find you. Since many websites strip EXIF info, this can be helpful. I have had several jobs come up because someone saw my logo and followed up to see who created it.

If your image is stolen and it can be shown that someone removed a watermark, it shows intent and can result in *much* larger awards in court than the mere use of the image. Assuming you have the means and desire to go that route.

Yeah, obviously the answer is; it depends.
For my example, very quick since the edges are easily mask-able.
The gradient for the desired DOF, although trivial to produce, can be difficult. Even though there are adjustments within the Lens Blur filter, it is still to some extent, trial and error with regard to how quickly focus falls off.

For events, I'll turn the LCD preview off completely. I'll only chimp periodically.
It saves on battery and heat. Although with the shooting you did, (and especially with the build of the K1), the LCD probably doesn't add much to the internal heat issue.

It would be interesting to use an EXIF tool to look at the camera body temp at that time.

Cover the viewfinder. If your head is in front of it while looking through, it blocks light coming in from behind.
If you stand back and let light into the camera (TTL -- "through the lens" works in both directions), the light coming in from the back can influence metering.
Put a hat over the camera, or shade the view finder with your hand and see if the problem persists.
Cameras used to come with a small viewfinder cap. I don't know if they still do. But that is what it is used for.

Wireless Auto Import within Lightroom from your K-1
Posted By amoringello

I know I've posted this elsewhere in the past but it has been spawned from discussion of the FluCard (which does not work with the K-1, and which I am no longer working on) or has been mentioned within other discussions. Anyway, I've improved things enough to make it more useable and felt it worth posting a specific thread on the subject.

Mainly photos may now be downloaded from SD card 1 or 2, and you may specify downloading DNG or JPG.
Note: the K-1 is so terribly slow, I'd only suggest using Small JPG. But the options are now available.

Another member is working diligently on an app to wirelessly control the K1, but I do not believe it can work in conjunction with Lightroom or other similar desktop applications to allow auto import of images from the K1 wirelessly to a desktop application.

This project is specifically intended to act in a similar fashion as the EyeFi cards used to do...
i.e. photos will be downloaded from the camera to a specific folder on your desktop.
The main application (e.g. LightRoom) watches that folder and AutoImports the files.
This does not do wireless tethering, and does not control the camera.

If interested, this is done in a cross-platform manner using Python. So you'll need to install that if you want to use on Windows.

The code is on GitHub. Grab the "k1Import.py" file
https://github.com/amoringello/FluCardPro-AutoImport

I definitely have some improvements to do. There are issues currently if you ave to shoot a full day and pile up the photo count. (see the readme)
But this gets me through most shorter photo sessions and I hope to fix this issue in the next release.

Editing software recommendations

Lightroom/Photoshop (costs a bit of money if you do not intend to do much editing).
Affinity Photo - does a great job at a great pice.
Raw Therapy - FREE. People who use it, love it. Has some of the best RAW support for Pentax cameras. It will work with JPG too, but especially for your question above, I hope you have raw files.

If you shot raw, you should be able to recover a lot from the image.
You can try with JPG, but results will be much more limited. I am actually quite surprises by what Paul got above.

There is no indication within Lightroom for pixel shift.
You can view the file size within the Metadata panel, and assume if the image is over 100MB that it is probably a pixel shift image.

Pentax K-1 Trying to turn on Wifi, camera turns itself off with overheating warning

Sorry to hear that. But being only 15-20 seconds, it sounds like a problem.
Otherwise, if you've been using live-view (either on the back of the camera or for the tethering app) for long periods, you could be reaching the limits of the camera site the sensor is active the whole time.

Assuming you also were not out in the hot sun for long periods, naturally.

Can you use a tool to examine the EXIF data from one of the photos and see what the temperature truly was?
I use "exiftool", but there are some online websites that can also do this. (maybe someone can help point to a good/useful one).

... and that is the second reason I buy my inks from Canon. Pretty nice.
Price of ink is about the same as from Amazon, but we get great bundles of Canon paper for free.
I actually have so much laying around now that I give or trade it to other photographers.

First reason...
I know people who work for the printer manufacturers writing their firmware and designing the hardware... the things they make the printer do behind the scenes when it detects non-brand inks is absolutely deplorable. I would say, if not absolutely illegal it is definitely immoral.

Software support for Pentax needed!

I wish they released the APIs so third parties could make Pentax cameras even more fun to use. But there has been some good reverse engineering done, to some extent.

I have a useful Python script which will wirelessly transfer images to your computer for auto-import to software like Lightroom.
Just set up your intervalometer settings in the camera, and let the computer download the images as they're taken.

There is also at least one another user on this forum that is creating their own complete tethering (control and transfer) software. But I don't believe it works with desktop Apps like Lightroom (i.e. was it mobile device only?). Anyway, contacting someone like that to add features might get a lot quicker and dedicated response than Ricoh.

Amazingly sharp at f2.8. I would think keeping the subject properly in focus would be difficult at that aperture, but the K1 focuses so much better than any other Pentax camera I've used. It almost magically focuses on the right spot almost every time.

100% crop, f2.8, 200mm, ISO 250 but still pretty decent.
