Fullframe camera is for whom?

FF vs APSC is always the same:
- lenses (meaning FF lenses) being used as they're intended to
- Different effect of DOF (not different DOF) due to different distance to the subject to fill the frame as APSC
- supposed better low light performance of the FF
- more heavyness of the whole system (FF lenses are bigger and heavier).
To answer: if you need 36 mpx and you already have FF lenses (legacy/vintage/new it's the same) and it weight doesn't matter for you and finally you don't mind spending money on a new camera body+lenses ....well, buy the k1 now, for that price that's a bargain price.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. And given the fact that I like long exposures, it seems that the superior metering system of the LX would be a big plus.

I thought it and would do it , but:
- I can print by myself no more than 6*6 negatives (I have an old Durst M605 with 35 mm and 6*6 kit).
- I'd like to go in the large format territory (field cameras like the horseman 760/980). They're very cheap these days.
- I'd like to use the MF/LF for a project that I would develop in the next years, but in this case field cameras would be much more useful due to the possibility to tilt/shift.
- In Pentax my only choice is the 645 but here the cost of a film P645 it's high still today (here starting from Eur 600/700 on from local stores with 1 year guarantee, no lens).

To sum up , at this point a 35 mm cameras and homemade development is much more suitable for re-starting my film experience after all those years of digital-only photography. Here comes the advice for a good 35 mm camera , given the fact that I like BIG and BRIGHT viewfinders.

For the most part 20 f/4, 28 f/2,8 , 55 f/2 200 f/4 various series plus someone else (300 f/4). I know they're not the best Pentax lenses out there, I miss those f/1.4 glass but I like those little gems. I also have some Nikon AI/AIS primes, but I like Pentax much more.

Thank You all for your kind advices , I'll surf the bay for LX, SuperA, MX , ME. I most like the old style camera designs and really appreciated the LX in my youth.
As for the shutter mechanics, is there something I could check before buying if I have the possibility to test the camera?

When I'll get the camera, I'll send it to a lab for replacement. there's a guy next to my city that has the knowledge for doing that.

Thank You all.
Matteo

Need advice for choosing a 35 mm film camera

Hi all.
I'd like to use my beloved Pentax glass with a film camera . I don't need autofocus or any special feature, but my requirements would be:
- big and bright viewfinder (essential)
- the possibility of using diopter adjustment
- maybe the possibility to use AV with my A glass (not really needed).

I've seen the LX going for about Eur 450,00 in Italy. While I consider that a reasonable price for a professional film camera, I don't want to spend so much for a 35 mm film camera nowadays (I would spend the same amount on a MF camera but my old darkroom kit covers at least 6*6 format)

I'd use it with B/W film, occasionally for color .
I feel like I want a little step back to analog, making some homemade print using my old darkroom.
Any advice is welcome and thank you all in advance!

Matteo.

UWA Prime - Narrowing the choices

The 20 f/4 (M) is a good lens I love mine. But its angle of view is not really "ultra wide" , which words I refer to something like 14-15 mm FL on full frame.

ok nothing wrong with that if the IQ suits your requirements. 36 mpx cropped to APS C still deliver 15 mpx images; FWIW that's a fair amount of detail remaining. But remember: it's just a cropped image , not an image taken with a lens the same FF correspondent FL. Just that.

i have the same problem: I have got 24-70 70-200 but mt preferred lens is the 24-35 f/2 sigma (for walkaround or cityscapes). My solution is a small inexpensive mirrorless with Pentax and Nikon legacy primes , I don't like switching lenses often with my primary camera body. I do that if I need a wider FOW than 24 on FF. the second camera is also useful when my primary camera is on the tripod: it acts like a scout camera, there's always something to discover when your first camera is busy or you wouldn't want to waste time fidding with lens swtiching. I found IQ pretty comparable and there's nothing to loose.

No it wouldn't. Focal lenght is different, camera is different so image is different. Field of view can be the same. Just try this: put your FF lens on a FF body, shot an image , say @105 mm ISO 100 @f/4 whatever the speed for a correct exposure. Then put the DA70 on the same FF body, shoot in APSC mode at the same values . Is the image the same? no....it's a different image. Lenses have their optical specifications and rendering depending upon optical schemes and, obviously, FL.

Sorry, I have no evidences because I never shot the same scene in controlled conditions with both 24 mp and 36 mp. Plus I'm not a scientist....So you're free to consider my words as BS. :) .
From my prints I see no big differences at high Isos (I don't print more than 20*30 cm over 1600 Iso, no matter the native format). And if I resize the photos to be seen on screen, I see no big differences at lower resolutions, like, i.e. 12 mpx or, minus more, screen size (3-4 mpx approx). Obviously 100% pixel-peeping is different.
My d800 (36 mpx camera - perfect condition) is noisy even at 800 Iso when pixel-peeping but that's not a real problem. Quite the same behaviour as d7100 (24 mpx apsc camera) perhaps a full f/stop difference ...that was unexpected for me but so it is ( I supposed much better performance of the FF). I don't know if newer cameras are better, I suppose so. These days I'm testing apple vs oranges: Iso 800-3200 pictures taken with my Fuji xt1 (16mpx non bayer) vs Nikon d800 - NIkon lenses on both .
Note: we're talking of noise, not DR or color response: APSC needs more PP as far as the Iso grows.

36 mpx FF raws are noisy... from 800 iso on, But after resizing to 24 mpx they look much much better and comparable with those from 24 mpx FF or APSC cameras. At lower resolutions and small devices, the difference is negligible. IMHO.

New Nikon Mirrorless

From my POW, Nikon could have done f/4 zoom and just f/1.8 primes to keep the weight low considering this is a MILC system, But the price tag is so high that existing Nikon users would buy a mew 750 with some F primes (or sigma f/1.4 ptrimes) at the same price(and weight). Obviously there's a didfferentiating factor if you look at the exsisting Nikon d850+f2.8 zooms.....the weight is a factor. But then, what user this camera would be aimed to? The real reason to do such a camera is for sure marketing. We have to wait for see if those lenses are high quality (I have the 20 f/1.8 from Nikon and its quality is really good with d8XX series camera) and then consider if the new system could be consistent for Nikon users that want the advantages of MILCs .

Yes, you're right. And it's a simple fact that Pentax has the better offering also in the APSC market, with very good lenses and cameras at a very competitive price or simply non exixstent in other brands. And it's also a fact that Nikon users buy lenses from Sigma for DX cameras as well as for FX .

It depends upon which is the user: professional ones stay with Nikon, but more and more use Sigma lenses (14 -20-24-35 14/24 24/35 Art Lenses are very good lenses some of which do not exist in Nikon lineup or need upgrade).
What Nikon gains with a new mount is putting the 3d party lens manufacturers away from its new camera system, possibly sharing nothing with them and/or making reverse engeneering very difficoult. So, if the new sistem stands up with its legs in numbers, Nikon gains a new market where brand aficionados can buy only original Nikon lenses.

From a satisfied high-end Nikon camera user there's nothing to be interested in , except the possibility to have a Nikon MILC (the reason to be interested in has to be investigated...). Let's say you have a D850, ok? What lenses are you using with that camera?toy lenses? for sure no. You would be using huge, heavy glass, perhaps Sigma glass because, let's face it, Sigma Art lenses are soo good and worth the money. So why investing (alot) of money in this new MILC that does not accept your current lenses and need an adapter to do that? If you have a mirrorless camera than need an adapter and use adapted lenses, you loose the weight convenience in the body and you get possible compatibility problems with lenses, not to say old afd lenses do not work at all.... As for now, this looks like the new toy for some people convinced that yje newest is better....
Wait....there are just 3 lenses.........no lenses wider than 24 mm...... where are now all the reviewers that wrote hostile reviews for the k1 because " there are no lenses" ?..............

What is a great picture anyway? And what is an actual bad picture?

The word "great" is a confusing word .... If "great" means the "wow" effect , this thing is going to happen very seldom. And this depends upon personal experiences and taste. But if I see a photo and immediately feel my heart starting to pump faster, my mind completely surfing that image , my senses sharing what's depicted in the image, yes definetly that is a great picture. I can't define it in better words than "juice of life" (being the word life comprehensive of all sorts of form of life from wilderness to human being).
Otherwise "great" means "consistent" and for sure I see much more consistent images than "great" or "wow" images. Those picture (unfortunately not mine pictures :) ) are technically good to exquisite and they're for sure interesting,
nontheless my pleasure is the act of scouting places and times to photograph, trying to making better pictures and enjoing my trials and errors.

With 36 mpx and landscape I prefer the stability of the tripod. I use Manfrotto 055+manfrotto 055 Mg head. The same for lenses whose FL exceeds 200 mm . Honestly in good light and shutter speeds above 1\500 when walking around I feel Ok shooting handheld. Sometims there's no time to set the tripod .

Infact all the AF failure affected lenses I said , i.e. 80-200 17-35 28-70, were Nikon PRO model zoom lenses price tagged at about Eur 2000, forced to retirement by other PRO lenses (14-24, 24-70, 70-200). We're saing the same thing. not sure for the 500 mm f/4 VR that's a 2007 lens (disconitued in 2015). By the way I didn't have any problem neither with Pentax 17-70 or my Nikon lenses...

Nikon changed the SWM technology later in time and some older AFS are still available now as new. Just recently Nikon retired the AFS 300 f/4 D with the newest 300 f/4 PFE (completely different optical design) . the AFS 300D is an old SWM despite being AFS (released in the year 2000)

older Nikon SWM-tech lenses are plagued by Af sudden death, specifically the AfsS 17-35 , the Afs 80-200 , afs 28-70. those lenses are renowed to have af failures in short time. This is due to design failures and lack of lubricant. Affected lenses are reported to whisle while focusing. AF problem is reparable but expensive. This problem affects the first version of AFS lenses .
