First Trip to Europe.

We managed to get relatively cheap flights from Boston to German in Mid August and My wife and 21 year old sone are traveling over for 8 days. In the past I have always traveled in the US or Canada and most always with either a my own car or fly and rent a car. We are taking advantage of the great rail service in Europe and traveling by train. This means houling very thing we have with us from stations to hotels and such, plus lots of walking for touring cities. My wife and I will each have a Pentax DSLR, a K70 and a KP. Now come down to how many lenses do we want to carry. Here is what we have avalable:

Pentax 16-85
Pentax 18-135
Pentax 55-300
Sigma 10-20
Sigma 24 mm ultra wide 2
Pentax 35mm 2.4 DA
Pentax 40mm DA
Pentax 50mm 1.7 F series
Pentax 70mm DA ltd

I have other lenses, but nothing I use too often or have not interest in carrying. While we would shore the use of the gear, I will do the carrying most of the lenses not on the cameras.

I also have a Q system with all the zooms.

Do I need a flash?

I do have plenty of batteries and SD card so that is not an issue.

Thanks,

Jim Fellows

I second that the SMC A 70-210mm f4. IT is a great lens and can be used on any K-mount camera including the newest DSLR's.

How long is the recital? I have been to some that go on a long time with many age levels of performers. If you have an external power supply that may be helpful. If not, make sure you have plenty of batteries and a place to charge them. Remember, you can only record 25 or 29 minutes at one time. Good luck.

Nikon: again abysmal sales and forecasting to shrink in a growing market

With most of the world stuck at home, and many people fearing finical losses, even if they did not realize them, people put the brakes on purchasing. Cameras for most are a luxury item and one often associated with travel. I wonder how supply chain disruptions are going to effect future sales?

Pentax k70 vs Pentax kp vs pentax k1 mark 2

It is a very vague question. It is like asking on a car forum you want top be a semi pro driver, what kind of car should I get. Are you a race car driver, a delivery truck driver an Uber driver? Let the forum know what your plans are and there are many knowledgeable friendly people here that can help.

Good Luck,

Picked up a Q10

I have joined the Pentax mirrorless club by buying a nearly new in box Q10 with the 02 zoom lens. I figured for $80.00 it was worth a gamble. I have just started to play with it and I am quite impressed. I really like the fact I can shoot in Raw and do decent post editing on the images. It certainly will not replace my K-3, or my wife's K-70, but a tiny camera to take when I don't want to carry the larger one, but something more than my cell phone. I am keeping my eyes open for the 01 lens for even a smaller package. IT is too bad Pentax chose not to continue to support the line.

I like the Superprogram. So much that after I sold my old one off after going digital, I ended up getting another one. You can also use more modern lenses that do not have the aperture ring on it, just not in aperture priority mode. It does need a small button battery, but they are readily available so not an issue. What ever body you get, there are a nearly unlimited amount of old K mount lenses to use, and with a an adaptor, even more screw mount lenses.

Have fun

I am using a K-3 and a K-500 and my 17 year old son has a K-50. I have had to fix both the K-500 and K-50 for the aperture block issue, but all are functioning great with no plans to replace them.

You have an interesting collection of lenses. I agree that you may like to have a wider lens. I like the 18-135 lens, but often end up using a 16-45 as I like the wider end. I have also learned that I get very tired carry around a lot lenses when touring. I know try to just try to have either one the of two lenses listed above and the 55-300 WR from Pentax. It is not the new PLM version, while I have a K-3, My son has a K-50 and my wife a K-500, which the PLM version will not work. The older I get, the more I like to simplify what I have and especially what I carry.

Since a quarter of the camera is missing, I would say about 75% of the going value of a complete one.

With the exception of one e-bay purchase, I have put together two very nice systems in the last 18 months. If you are willing to take your time and wait for a nice camera to come along at the right price. I was able to get my son a K-50 with the blocked aperture problem for the cost of postage. They supposedly will work with older manual lenses, but I followed the directions else where on the forums on how to repair it. It is now fully functional and he never leaves home with out it (or some of my lenses). I have seen K-5 cameras go for $200 or less in the marketplace as well. I have purchased a number of other items from the market place and all have been as good or better then expected and everybody has been great to deal with. I would wait for a for a K-5 and save your pennies (better yet dollars) and see what shows up on the market place.

Another camera that flies under the radar is the K-500, basically a K-50 with fewer whistles and bells, such as weather proofing, but the same image quality.

Wedding Photography advice

I have shot two weddings as the main photographer with my wife, one ages ago using a K-1000 and a little more recently using an *ist DS2. Both came out fairly well, but both were quick weddings that were on a minimum or zero budget. We also did not get paid, but gave the photos/negs/files to the couples. I did play 2nd fiddle to a pro at my sister in laws wedding using my high end se up of a Superprgram with motor drive, a 35-105 f3.5 lens and an AF-280 flash. I shoot that one in B&W for something different. I made sure to stay out of the way of the pro. I would never take money for a wedding, it is very stressful shoot and if you miss key photos it can be a disaster. Playing the number two to a pro may be a good way to get your feet wet.

K3 vs A6500, to switch or not to switch

I gave my wife the Sony 6300 for Christmas, I shoot with a K-3. The Sony is a very nice camera and it is much smaller and lighter. My kids are 20 and 16, so I don't have to case them around to photograph them any more, but I can see the advantages of a light, mirrorless camera. I think the single biggest draw back on Sony is the cost of the lenses for them. Once you move away from the consumer/kit lenses, they are very pricy. Do you feel like you are missing shots with the K-3?

I like Wordpress, it is very easy to update and get material posted with out a lot of effort. I am not a prolific blogger and I do not want to have to struggle to get things posted so it works well for me. I use it for my model railroading.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will try the A 50mm on the k I000 and carry the 24mm and the 28 and see how it goes. I can always crop, can't make it wider in post. (Ok you can stich).

I have been wanting a 35mm lens for a while and have always wanted the older FA 35mm 2.0. This goes pack to when I was shooting film with a Z-5. I like the the faxk it is a bit faster and full frame, but am I really giving much up by going with the DA 35mm 2.4? I also like the idea of keeping a bit more money in my pocket!
