Just catching up now.... Received the traveling nifty 50 on Sep 15 (or it might have been the 14th). We left for a camping trip on Sep 17, during which I had grandiose plans of taking a lot of pics. To make a long story short, we spent two days getting our truck repaired after it died on Interstate 81 but finally made it to our campground late Friday night. Still went to "America's Largest RV Show" in Hershey, Pa. but spent a lot more time there than expected. Made it back to our campground Saturday evening after dark, only to find that our old travel trailer now had issues. Good thing we purchased a new one earlier in the day......but still had to deal with those issues. Only took a few pics Sunday since I wasn't having too good of a weekend. (We normally don't have these sorts of issues--when it rains, it pours!) Got home a bit ago, got our dogs, and now catching up with life.
Who's getting the lens next?? Vagrown, will it get to you then to Outis in time if I send it out next Monday? Wanted to see about getting some actual photos somewhere other than my backyard since this past weekend was such a bust. I wasn't too keen on taking any of the truck repair center or I-81, although I could have had some interesting shots of the Susquehanna River from our breakdown location on that bridge...........

Thanks for this! I finally got my 35mm 2.4 at an amazing price of $66! I have to admit, I had $15+ in Adorama credit and a $50 gift certificate from a holiday purchase. Still....! :)

Thanks, alamo5000, for the tips. I normally shoot landscape and architecture...and do like to try to find different types of shots at the beach. I don't plan on limiting my shots on this trip, however (even though my free time will be brief). I'll probably experiment with a lot of different types of shots.
I usually like to sleep in when I'm not working (I normally get up at 3 a.m.!) but I think I'll pass on the extra sleep to take advantage of my time there. I anticipate going back again (maybe with my husband next time) so will probably save a lot of the touristy stuff for then (e.g., Pearl Harbor). I'll only be on Oahu.
Very cool article! Nice job! (I'm a writer as well.) Thanks for giving me the link......Sean's photos are fabulous. Maybe I should pass on my own pics, go to his studio to drool over his work, and buy a print or two. :)
Thanks for all of the info!

I'm fortunate enough to be going to Hawaii for work. It's only a short trip, however, and I can only manage an extra day or two to sightsee and take pictures. Since it's my first time to Hawaii, I want to find an efficient (yet inexpensive) way to see some sights. I ran across a photography tour company called Blue Hawaii, which has good reviews on TripAdvisor. Has anyone taken a tour with this company or another on Oahu? Any recommendations? I'm not sure if I'll have a rental car.
Thanks!

I can't answer for any future purchases since I'm still getting to know my new K-50; however, I'll answer for past purchases (as many others have...and which have made good reading!):
My first "real" camera, the Canon AE-1 Program: Was a Christmas gift, actually, from my parents after I expressed an interest in photography and continuously complained about the 110 film camera taking crappy pictures (I actually expected the photo to look a bit like the image through the viewfinder). This was circa 1985.
Olympus Camedia D-550: My first digital camera, purchased around 2003 since I was going on a cruise and wanted to take a lot of pictures but not carry my AE-1 around. Also wanted more "instant gratification" of digital.
Pentax K-100D Super: Christmas gift in 2007. Wanted the combo of SLR and digital.
Olympus OM-1 (film): Ran across in 2008 at a yard sale; picked it up for $25. Wanted to play around with it and the two lenses it came with.
Canon PowerShot A2400: Purchased circa 2013. Ran across a great deal at Staples. The Camedia had a few broken bits, my husband sometimes wanted to take photos when I had the DSLR, and I wanted a pocket camera for when I didn't want to carry around the K-100D.
Pentax K-50: Had a number of features not on the K-100D. Found the K-100D limiting for low-light situations when I didn't want to use a flash. Wanted focus peaking and better autofocus.
As you can see, I'm hardly an "early adopter." My next purchases will be additional lenses for the K-50, and I expect to use this camera for quite a while. By the way, I still have all of the other cameras. ;)

For me, the bridge is more than a distraction--it's covering the city/skyline almost totally at one point. Your thought was good in that if you had been higher, the bridge's location would have been ok. At least you went out for pics! I only took a few from my yard. Maybe today....

Appreciate the input, Sagitta. I don't recall where it got really noisy; I'll have to go through old pics to find out. Then again, not really an issue now (or as much of one) since I got the K-50. Although I should discover my max for noise there!

Thanks, TedW. The location isn't near me, but we usually hit a place with a boardwalk arcade once a year. I'll have to try out different types of shots in the future.

I was thinking on Lake Rowena (which is more pond-size, I agree). I could be "misremembering." Haha. I wandered out once with my nephew to watch them fish, and it was a bit surreal considering it was PA and not Michigan or Minnesota. I may have my own snow pics tomorrow; we may get hit tonight. Crossing my fingers!

There's always snow in Ebensburg! Being from Armstrong County, I drive through your little hamlet from my current home in central PA every time I visit the folks. We haven't been getting snow this year as everyone that way has, and my husband's ready for a trip over there because he loves his snow. I presume the lake's frozen over and the ice fishing cabins are out?

I know NOW to use a tripod for a photo like this, as well as shooting in RAW. (This was a JPEG.) Is there anything in post-processing you would suggest for this photo? I plan to edit out the small piece of brown trim above the "KE" in "Skee."
Any other thoughts welcome! Thank you!

I totally agree that organizing something like this would take a lot of work. I didn't consider that designing a course like this would be more than referring folks to different areas of the forum for more in-depth information. I do appreciate the different areas of expertise--not to mention the differing opinions.
I like your suggestion of working through the weekly challenges. I should start with that, I think. ---------- Post added 02-06-15 at 07:09 PM ---------- Yes! For me, it's the application and practice. My last formal photography classes were, hmmm, 27 years ago....or did I take one in the early 1990s as well? Anyway, I need to make it a priority to post pics for critiquing--that will be the best way for me to improve. Are you sure Otis doesn't still teach classes??

A new thread in the K-50 forum got me thinking about this: has anyone tried to run a beginner's (or advanced beginner's) class within the forums? There is so much great advice here. Every time I read suggestions on improving one aspect of my photography, I think about working on that until another great suggestion comes along on improving another aspect. Maybe I'm not disciplined enough (well, there's no "maybe" about that), but I feel so scattered on trying to improve. My area doesn't have any classes, and I'm hesitant to enroll in an on-line class, especially one that might have a large number of other people. One huge benefit of the forums is the great personalized advice people give. Maybe what I'm looking for is a weekly challenge for specific topics/techniques PLUS critiques PLUS reading homework. Since most of you have been around here longer than I, what say you?
Thanks for reading!
