This is our cat Zevo, catching a nap in the fall sunshine. She was about 18 when this was taken. It's an old one from three years ago, but taken on a Pentax ME camera with a 50mm 1.7 SMC lens on Fuji Pro 400 film (scan from negative). She passed away last year at age 20.

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome! It seems like a nice group here, from what I've seen. I'm always open to suggestions for photography spots, especially as I'm rather new to the area. Most of what I shoot is documentary or nature (and sometimes both), with a little street here and there. This weekend, it's nature walks and my recently acquired K-5!

Lens question for Russia trip

The question of missing the longer zoom all depends on what kind of photography you plan to do there. If you're mostly into people, street and tourist shots, then you'll probably be fine with the 10-20 and the 18-135. Other than nature shots, I've always found long zooms more of a hindrance on trips than not. For me, the wide angle lenses are the ones I always regret leaving behind. There won't be much wildlife in St. Petersburg, though, another reason to save your back and knees and go with the lighter lenses. There are, however, a lot of interesting looking people there, so something in the portrait range can be very useful.

Hello from Washington, DC

Born in southern California, I've lived all over the world and have settled (for now) in Washington, DC. Currently, I work in IT, but previously I was a photojournalist (the poorly paid, overworked, stressed-out kind, not the romantic movie kind). Now, I am happy as an amateur photographer, making my living other ways, and falling in love with the camera again.

I started with Pentax many years ago with film SLR's (Pentax ME), then left for Olympus film (OM-1, OM-2, OM-4), then Olympus digital (E-520, E3), and now I've returned to Pentax with a recent K-5 purchase. Wow! Now I remember why I always had a soft spot for Pentax.

So hello to everyone here from Washington DC!
