A Tale of Amazon and the Postal Service.

This was not the fault of the USPS as far as I can tell.. They didn't have the package until today. It was in the possession of Amazon or a contract carrier until early this morning.

A Tale of Amazon and the Postal Service.

It arrived today. Amazon, according to USPS tracking, handed it over to the post office in the wee hours of this morning.
Anybody want to guess where the postal service received it?

Anyone?

Anybody?

It was in Bismark, ND where it started 5 days and over 3,000 miles ago.

I'm starting to think this "tracking" was just an administrative anomaly and the item never actually left Bismarck until this morning. I'd like to think that rather than thinking any company could be as ridiculously incompetent as Amazon appears to be if the package did in fact go on tour.

Nature Fortuitous eagle shot

Fortuitous shot. From my sailboat though motoring as zero wind.

There is a mated pair of eagles that hang out on Holyrood Bluff and has for many years now. Female eagles are much larger than males and this is the female, I think. Usually they are high up on the cliff which makes for a difficult shot with my equipment (Pentax KP w/ 55-300 PLM) and high angle to boot. This week this one was down by the water' edge in a tree near Chapel Cove. Got this pic when she shifted balance and spread her wings to steady herself in the tree and so was able to get a pic with much better lines than normal. Even was able to back off to 260mm zoom which is better w/ that lens IMO. (Shutter speed was actually 1/400sec. but that was not an option in the dropdown.)

Reason posted is that I really DO like the lines of the eagle, her body, and her wings and how those lines are found repeated in both the parallel and the orthogonal branching in the spruce.

Never posted here before. Be gentle!

Why have I not also been banned by this site?

PF has some really nice members, though I suspect we're the same mix of folks you'd find in most decent web communities. However, I do think Adam and the moderators try their level best to balance the interests of the community with those of the individual (so far as possible, of course; clearly, at some point the community must take priority). In my experience, they only issue full bans as a last resort, when there's no other option to prevent ongoing disruption. That said, whatever our individual circumstances, we each play our part in keeping things cordial and respectful around here...

It's entirely at Adam's discretion, but there seems to be some inconsistencies in its awarding. I'll try to explain why I feel the awarding is a bit lumpy.

Some back story first if I may.
I was alerted to THIS THREAD after starting my thread. As the official nomination thread is in the Pentaxian Lounge sub-forum, I was prevented from seeing it while viewing/checking the forums as a Visitor (not logged in), as that forum is for some members only, ie, Pentaxians, Site Supporters, and Loyal Site Supporters. New members and basic forum members are prohibited by the system from viewing content, as they don't see the forum listed in there feeds. Similar to only moderators and administrators seeing/accessing the Moderator forum. Anyway, @Sandy Hancock ; kindly nominated Ian by proxy by linking this thread in the official thread above. Okay, so that's a little back story and now for the confusing to me lumpy bits.

Member stevebrot was the first recipient on or around July in 2018, and photolady95 was given the award after her passing. Both very worthy members to get the title, but neither of the two got the award in December (as what seemed to be the criteria) which appears quite rigid for the usual awarding IMO. I say that because it seems strange to me that an award given in memory of Rupert (dare I say it, a scallywag of epic proportions and not one to usually adhere strictly to the rules himself ) have an award given in his name that is opposite to the spirit of his own membership here. I shared many friendly PM's with Rupert and found him to be one of the least rigid individuals I have ever encountered. I miss him. I'm confident that Rupert would be humbled by the award given in his name, but I'm also confident that he would question why worthy members had to wait for an arbitrary date to get the deserved recognition.

Just a thought for @Adam to consider.
Perhaps you could give the recognition via the title change at anytime during the year in hono(u)r of Rupert's own personality but officially announce the recipients in a thread on or around the December 19 date as that could be a very workable compromise. The one thing I knew for sure about Rupert is that he never waited to show generosity.......;)

Well a comment then.

You have been a positive influence on this discussion group as well over the years. When serving as a moderator you worked diligently to ensure the membership got the guidance and support needed, and helped to keep the miscreants and spammers at bay. It was always a pleasure to work with you, and I miss your presence on the team.

Thank you for initiating this recommendation for Ian, as he does indeed deserve it, and hereby gets my vote.

This does not appear to be covered - if it is, Mods please re-locate.

Just checking over my K3 ready for an intended trip tomorrow, now we have weather I can breathe and don't have to chew. Replaced batteries (grip and body) with fully charged ones, checked SD cards for capacity, then went through settings in case something had changed.

Panic !!!!

SR not on, couldn't set it. Looked at manual, looked at E-book - no help. Went through everything else, then had an idea - was self-timer on ? Yes it was, as I had used camera on tripod yesterday. Reset to single shot mode - and lo and behold, SR came back on !! One relieved OAP here.

Anyone else care to share similar experiences ?

:lol: :lol: :lol::D :o

May I respectfully suggest that those not using Norton might be getting a false negative and are risking their computer security by entering the thread.
If a spammer has hijacked one of the links to suit their own agenda, the Norton alert is a welcome notice and to ignore it so quickly might have consequences.

Norton is one of the best, if not the best, at preventing all manner of nasty stuff getting into computers. If there is a malicious link embedded in the above thread somewhere, perhaps for member safety sake, the thread needs hiding from member access until the bad content is found and removed. If none is found, then no harm done and it can restored to view. I have used Norton extensively and trust it. To the mods in this thread that easily accessed the thread with no alerts, could I caution you not to click on any links of suspected spammers as I don't believe your security features are enough to ensure protection. Just my $0.02.

Sounds like a "bait and switch" scam. Spit out the bait before you swallow tha hook.

Sorry to hear your bad luck in this direction. It is hard to meet new people (at least, I am told it is) but the e-world is probably the most risky place to try.

Michael, just to show you how easy it is to fool someone, the image below was completely built by Adobe Generative Fill on a blank canvas. It took about 2 minutes to create.
No people were photographed to make this image, it was 100% created by AI on my computer. I added the text in the top left myself, everything else is AI. The fingers on her right hand are the giveaway that this is a generated image, but it's easy to overlook.

I don't have any experience of dating websites, Michael, but from everything I've heard and read, most are frequented by considerable numbers of scammers, and some sites are even run by them. They're looking to prey on folks who are vulnerable because their desire to meet someone is so strong that they desperately want to believe the scammers are genuine.

I agree with Sandy that all or part of that photo is created using image manipulation tools (perhaps AI). If you look at each letter on the "hand written" sheet, every occurence of an "e", "a" and "m" look exactly the same. No-one writes like that - there are always so many tiny variances in each letter. At the very least, the girl in the photo was holding up a blank sheet of paper and others are taking that image and writing whatever they want on the paper using Photoshop, GIMP, or some AI tool... EDIT: ... and now that you've sent the scammer a photo of you holding a piece of paper with writing on it, they can use that image to scam someone looking for a male partner... they'll just clone out the writing and replace it with whatever they like :o

It's not my place to advise what you should and shouldn't do, but I can't help thinking you're throwing good money after bad in paying to use a site like that (probably most dating sites, for that matter), and I worry for your safety and security. That money could instead pay for access to regional group social activities and events where you'd get to meet people face-to-face and build friendships - which might grow into something more over time...

Good luck, and please be careful :o

We were vacationing in Oia, the Greek island of Santorini a few weeks ago. I was busy taking photos in a very touristy area with countless people coming and going. It was a perfect spot for a guitar player who was busking nearby. I got my photos and hurried off to the next spot. A few HOURS later, I realized that I no longer had my cell phone, an iPhone 14. I retraced my steps until I was back at the same place. The busker was no longer playing. He was packing up his gear, ready to call it a day. Looking around, I found a piece of torn paper under a golf ball sized rock with a handwritten note that said, "I found your phone and left it with the musician"

With the note in hand, I went straight to the musician who simply looked and smiled at me and handed me my phone. I tried my best to thank him but the language barrier made for an awkward interaction. Other than a few Euro coins, I had absolutely no cash with me. I had no idea how much they were but I handed all of them to him hoping I wouldn't insult his kindness. He smiled at me again and accepted my small act of gratitude.

My sincerest gratitude to the person who took the time to pick up my phone and write a note and to the musician who took care of my phone for me. Two kind and classy people. Neither one you will ever see me again or read this note but I promise to honor your act of kindness by paying it forward.

This would be tough decision for me, but I think I'd lean toward replacing with a new (or gently used?) one. I think the 200 euro could be a conservative guesstimate.

It may shock you that most of the moderators also have a day job, and a life outside these forums. If you have a problem you want us to address, the responsibility is on you to do your own ground work.

I wasn't aware we had a bad name.

I would be interested in the motivation for your post. Looking at your history, you have had four moderator actions taken over your nearly 14 years as a member here. They have all been minor, and all by different members of the Moderation Team. I don't see a pattern of discrimination.
