I will decide you don't intend this comment to be taken the way it reasonably may be taken.

As a matter of fact, I think most people here are aware a lens is involved :^)

That is such a stark but obvious contrast that it seems like leading the discussion with a result in mind. Your comment makes a point but not all points. I could suppose you are stating your opinion only but your post reads as if you are imparting to me knowledge unknown. Schooling on the difference between a small camera with large lens & a large camera with small lens is useful and I will add that "small" is more than the sum of its parts.

Writing that the space saved is only few mm here and there does sound reasonable. However, a few mm here and there can greatly affect the volume of an object... Writing 13mm on this axis isn't as great an impact as 80mm of the waterline because 80 allows for a smaller bag and stating that as a simple fact makes a point but not all points. Perhaps I have missed a particular bag that is part of the discussion but, if not, your point is a little bit disingenuous. It isn't possible to state that x size in one dimension makes more or less impact than y size in another dimension when fitting things in the bag There are all different sizes and shapes of the bag and it is very possible that 13mm may bump a user into the next larger bag.

As comprehensive as an argument may be, there are always other things to consider. A person arguing the size difference between a K3 and K1 is negligible does have a different idea of small than myself and perhaps a few other people here :^) People have successfully argued the KP is a good (small) size and that has been a popular and accepted position! Shouldn't be a far leap to believe people would also like a small camera with more "traditional" Pentax styling.

When I think Sony, I also think integrated lens adapter

My perception may be dated or just incorrect altogether, but seems to me like many Sony lenses for their mirrorless system are lenses made for longer registration distance with an adapter tube grafted on. These lenses have a smaller diameter at the back.. I thought that was a waste of space and advantage of short registration distance but don't recall (may have missed it all) much complaint about this in forums or even the DPR :^)

Grafting adapters to the back of existing lenses is a way to quickly fill out lens portfolio when making a mount change. Lenses with built-in adapter might be received more openly [because they are "new"] by people than simply being told by the manufacturer to purchase and use a separate adapter with the same old lenses made for the old and (re)tired lens mount :^).

And BEFORE the wrist strap suggestion & while writing my post you quoted just now, I thought you were talking about holding the camera while taking pictures... reh described a standard technique you wrote sometimes requires doilies and salad forks (dainty) and is unsuitable for running and etc. Since he was talking about taking pics at that time, I thought you were as well. I later decided your comments were about holding the camera during non-pic-taking activities... whole different container of fish.........

There are some goats loose, I think.
Goat rodeo is a fun term I like to use for mare's nest or whatever else describes confusion and/or frantic activity. I don't think there is a rodeo but there is a goat or two of misunderstanding and misinterpretation loose in the room :^)

No, they aren't wrong
Pinch grip is what it is called
It is not as strong and not as comfortable. Longer fingers may not wrap comfortably around even the fat KP grip and so finger tips will bear the load keeping the camera in hand and off the ground.

Not directed at your post now, but there have been a handful of ways to accommodate the smaller grip size when not taking pictures : slings, clips, put it in the bag, hold lens barrel, hand it to your assistant. Of course, two hands when taking pictures makes the smaller grips not so troublesome. The KP design is different from other Pentax cameras but not so different from some cameras from other manufacturers... I'm not sure I would like KP design v. the now typical dSLR design and, more so than the grips, I am wary of the locations for the shutter button and front command dial.

"try before you buy" usually a pretty safe argument to make. In America, it isn't really a practical argument. Most of the people here know it isn't very easy to see Pentax cameras before buying so people are left with comparing Pentax cameras to other cameras they are able to see/hold/use. For instance, I know I do not prefer shutter button on body of other cameras I own so I will make a leap I will not prefer it on KP and suggesting that this is simply because I haven't ever seen one isn't practically helpful...

In America, my choices are :
1) live (fairly) close to someone who has the camera and who will let me take a look
2) order from on-line to take a look knowing I am going to send the camera back...*
3) travel outside the country **

* I don't do this because I think it is wrong.
** If I am going to pay for travel to New York B&H, I prefer to bundle that money with other and go somewhere interesting.. I have visited camera stores in other countries to see a Pentax display but that wasn't my only reason for visiting the country as it would be my only reason for visiting New York :^)

And my suggestion about the wrist strap wasn't an attempt to make the KP suitable for you. You preference for larger grips seems to be some because it is easier to hold cameras when you aren't taking pictures. A wrist strap could make that even easier because the camera would stay attached to you even with a relaxed grip and this is why I suggested it.

It's not really a mess... it is a different style.

I am sure I wouldn't like the shutter button on the body. I haven't held a KP but do use other cameras that have the shutter release on the body and I do prefer the release on the grip. With the release on the grip, I don't use my fingertip to trip the thing. I lay my index finger over the release and can ..tense the muscles in that finger and make the shutter go. I don't ever press (press down) the button, so to speak, and I think this is a good thing.

But that doesn't mean the KP is a mess....

I bet you will be in luck. Looks like most of the newer cameras have the play button on the right. I think it is better as well.

Someone else in the thread thinks Sony and thinks Hi-Fi
I think Sony and think root kit

I am a snob in that I enjoy the traditional camera company names :^)

I recently bought a heavily discounted Panasonic ?? (I am looking at the camera now and can't find the model..) to replace an Olympus EPL6. I am a little okay with Panasonic; I liked my 2005 Panasonic bridge camera. My first real camera choice was between Canon & Olympus. My first digital was Olympus. And the EPL6 sure is prettier [and costs more] than the Panasonic ?? black box. The Olympus looks less like a digital device and more like a ..camera :^)

+ Panasonic model is only on the bottom tag with FDA warning
Low key little black thing other than LUMIX in largish white letters

When the DA limited lenses were updated, they got both new coatings and curved aperture blades.
Less better stars but more better out of focus elements.

I haven't read through all this thread so maybe the aperture blades turn out to be curved...

I really didn't think I would see any changes of any kind for small lenses.. not anymore.

Let me be the first to complain they should have done this to the FA28 :^)

Definitely not linear
What sells best is the $500 lens marketed at $750 and periodically on sale for $500

There is absolutely no reason that a little speaker can't be hidden in a camera and that the little speaker can't make screw-drive noises. Just for fun, imagine people looking serious with lenses the size of Chunky soup cans that go ee-aw ee-aw. [better there is room in new lenses for an ee-aw speaker]

Amateur Photographers (UK) Predicts End for Pentax

First, let me say I do understand that Pentax is not a company operating on its own and that Ricoh owns Pentax.

However, I think Pentax is more than just a brand name. There is cohesion to Pentax and whatever they churn out is the result of a coordinated effort.. such as that effort may be.

Now, KODAK is simply a brand. There is no Kodak mothership and Kodak is found plastered on various stuffs produced by completely unrelated companies. These companies have paid for the privilege to use the Kodak name/brand on their product.

Although it may not be technically correct, Pentax seems more like a division or business unit of Ricoh. If either division or BU is technically correct then I think calling Pentax a simple brand underplays what 'Pentax' is and especially compared to 'Kodak'. If Pentax is neither division nor BU, it is certainly more than Kodak and there ought to be some way to refer to the Pentax entity other than with the same term that describes Kodak...

+ since this thread is, or may be, no longer safe for work : Kodak is like a traveling companion for hire while Pentax is the brand to take home to meet the parents. It just aint right to use the same descriptor for both Kodak & Pentax :^|

I vote for : camera would not allow installation of incorrect firmware.

As for this....

I think most people would quietly exit the room if they made a fubar on their camera.
Still.. someone out there would bleat to heaven if they were ALLOWED to make fubar..
So Pentax is surely smart enough to prevent people sticking their finger in the electric socket..

I use AWB
I let the camera take a guess, then software can take a guess. If that is no good, there is usually something in the scene neutral enough to use for picking WB.

As for the purple.. DPR test shows the same and this is a disappointment. I asked Bill Claff about the purple and he said it was due to black point and could be caused by CFA.. this color shift in the DPR test could be due to camera variation. okay..

I wondered if maybe the CFA in the K-1 II could be different.. and if the shift is CFA-related and my K-1 doesn't do this color shift then maybe a K-1 upgraded to K-1 II would not show this shift to purple... I asked these questions and didn't get a reply and likely because he doesn't have info to give a good answer..

But here is another K-1 II with color shift...
Different CFA afterall or shift related to accelerator ?

+ if this shift is due to improper raw editor profile then that is okay; profiles will be created. I wonder what file format he is using. Looks like Adobe software but if the file info shown in the corner has format I can't read it.

K-1mkII overpowered NR. Firmware update?

I don't know if this will show up in the nested quotes, so here : Realizing the ideal imaging concept included extremely detailed activities, because PENTAX places as much importance on the human perception of beauty as the company does in numerical evaluations.

This is the same position many people take with the limited lenses

I am perfectly fine with my small lenses
I don't want the increasing popular perfectly corrected soup cans
I realize I am leaving some elements of lens performance on the table
And I am okay with that...

So... why is it so hard to leave some detail on the table with K-1 II, this detail being distinguishable only after exhaustive study...

I think it is because I /could/ buy a soup can lens and rake in the extra lens performance winnings.. while anything left behind with a camera is regained only after buying a new body.

However, I don't see me buying soup can lenses ** and while I want the ultimate better body, I think I will be happy with Pentax K-1 II just as I am with Pentax other-than-perfect-not-soup-can lenses. bless their tiny hearts being driven to extinction

** I recently purchased an IRIX 15
WTF ?!! LOL I like it but I Will Not travel with it back-pack style :^p

---------- Post added 05-19-18 at 10:48 AM ----------

Well, if I had the KP, I don't think I would upgrade to either K-1 or K-1 II. Upgrading a K-1 only gives me, in some cases, performance I would see with the KP.

However, I don't got a KP so my decision tree is little different :^)

I could either become an NR wizard or sell the K-1 and buy a KP. I want only one body to use and will upgrade the K-1 to encompass benefits I could enjoy with the KP while still having benefits the FF body provides versus APS-C such as your use with manual focus lenses or my desire to crop extensively.

The K-1 body is bulkier than KP but not enough to matter (it still just fits in the bag I used for K-5) and the weight between systems for my kit is the same.. so, I get picked from the floe by SS K-1 II while you may be rescued by SS KP... see you in port :^)

+ I noted earlier that if KP & K-1 were released together, I would buy KP. I could still achieve KP-ness by selling the K-1 but selling gear isn't easy and after buying L-bracket and batteries I don't think I would be ahead much. So I think I will stay with what I have since I started down this route.

I have also seen the gorilla in our midst

I used the K-5 at ISO 800 and would later lift exposure 1-1.5 stops and this gave good brightness for most low light scenarios I found myself in. I didn't really like using ISO 1600 in camera and this was just the way I liked it.

The K-1 has seemed to exhibit more noise than I would expect to see compared to my K-5. But I haven't done side-by-side comparisons and this is just a feeling I have.. I am very familiar with K-5 and some familiar with K-1. It is entirely possible I am pushing the K-1 a little harder because I know it should perform some better, not at a pixel level, but at the same viewing sizes I typically use. So far, I haven't been disappointed with K-1 /output/.

I used to really be into technical stuff in what I hoped was a practical way.. sometimes it was just to satisfy my curiosity. Before ISO-lessness versus ..ISO-ful was a thing, I had determined the best low light IQ was available from a K-20 when first setting desired aperture and slowest possible shutter and then exposing right using the ISO setting but only up to 1600. This was empirical study :^) I was learning about digital stuff...

Anyway, rambling hard now. I feel like i have noticed what you have between K-5 and K-1 but don't see me testing things out to a firm conclusion; I feel less of this desire to know with a dead blow hammer as I get older and just want stuff to work.. [ pointing to Windows 10 :^) ] and I think the K-1 II might be an okay bet for me.

* Knowing how to squeeze performance from a K-20 was helpful sometimes because operating the older cameras with less better performance was like driving a stick shift car with no choke while newer cameras with performance to spare are like driving cars with comfort-glide suspensions...

Thanks :^)

I didn't mention adding special sauce to the sensor.
I mentioned electric doodads surrounding the sensor and how they process the signal.

Stable voltages should be supplied by electrical doodads but I don't know if those are the electrical doodads Mr. Claff had in mind with his comment.. I suspect Bill may have more in mind than voltage regulation but I don't really know.

Reads like Falconeye and Bill might be talking about different things. If they both have in mind the same thing, based on what you have written and I have related, there is a difference of opinion.

Pentax has been lauded in forums for getting the most out of Sony sensors and while the lauding is a fact, the lauding itself is of course subjective but still I mentioned it as an ersatz 'evidence' of differences between cameras with the same or nearly same sensors. However, I followed with Bill's comment which I expected would carry some weight...

You are informing me of things I need to know and I believe hope to sway my opinion based on comments you have written that seem to contradict comments I have written with both comments from sources recognized as reasonably knowledgeable about things upon which they comment... :^)

Actually, I looked at the samples only the last day or two.. there have been comments made at DPR about differences between camera settings on either the new or old camera that have made the test invalid and I think some of those differences have little effect (menu settings that don't affect RAW, etc.). I don't mean to say that not matching settings is anything other than sloppy... it invites argument and so isn't smart.

Now we have the 'image switch' debate and this along with the noise from complaints about irrelevant settings come across, I think, as a whole lot of complaining about anything and this has perhaps weakened some arguments about the switch : oh, so now you claim this.

I believe the images were switched. Even though I have no evidence myself, less subjective indicators like file size reported by people I don't think would lie and the behavior of DPR itself have me thinking there was a switch.

Rishi made two comments each in a different post in the same DPR forum thread : (1) haven't yet been able to photograph stars & (2) K-1 II is star eater on steroids.

I wrote a post suggesting that statements like that could create a feeling of bias amongst the people. They really have capped it for me with respect to bias... honestly, a comment like that is just not smart from a business perspective. To their credit (or indifference) they have not edited those comments. Who knows, maybe they don't see the damage caused to their brand by loose canon comments.

That all said, the K-1 II results at 6400 while looking at the embroidered Beatle head looks about a stop better than either K-1 or the other two cameras compared... hmm.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in any threads is the result of the dynamic range widget at DPR. The K-1 II is not 'ISO invariant'. I don't think exposing at ISO 100 with an intention to later lift 6 stops is a good idea (without reason) for any camera. However, the K-1 II shows more color shift than the K-1 when pushed a few stops... The K-1 II seems happiest with 1 stop push. This would make the greatest difference to me, I think. Although, I usually don't lift more than 1.5 stops or so.. I have long given up grad-ND and been satisfied with single image manipulation of interiors with windows or sunrise or etc. even with K-5. On the other hand, I have an Olympus 4/3 that is utterly intolerant of this treatment and after experiencing results with that thing, I know I would miss the convenience of single image work. :^) [note: the shifts shown in the widget are not as severe as those of my EPL-6]

If these DR samples are accurate & representative, I would vote for a switch to turn off the NR for high contrast scenes and be happy with it on for scenes with less contrast.

+ in the article comments, people are writing 'fake news' when they mean simple misunderstanding, rumor, or supposition. Gosh, after how many years we finally shook off 'full transparency' and now we have another empty phrase stuck to our shoe. I don't mean to say fake news doesn't exist but the phrase can't be applied to everything.
he made a mistake
nuh-uh, fake news
