Does anyone know why this "Barn" is built/added on so strangely? |

Like the picture of ropes!
Could you give us a run-down as to what lens/adapters/ex. tubes you used for the smaller 52mm set up for the Q? It's a bit hard to distinguish, what's what.
I have the 72mm setup for my now a7 (previously k-3). It's an interesting lens/filter, I find it a little difficult composing with the image flipped upside down in the viewfinder though. |

I tried my hand at my first lens repair and what I thought was fungus, turned out to be balsam separation (see 12a/b)
For the 40mm, the only "doublet" element can be accessed through the rear of the lens, so dissambling the ring in the front of the lens is unnecessary, unless you have to for your own lens.
As you can see I am not a professional and I know I'll be roasted for the tools used, but that is all I had on hand.:D
Aside from the tools, you will need an optical adhesive (I bought on amazon) and a UV light (also bought on amazon (bulb only).
To get the doublet apart, I steeped the element in a insulated water bottle with boiling water for about 6-9hrs. I would change the lukewater every few hours with fresh hot water.
When loose enough, I pressed hard against the lens as if rubbing 2 coins together and it slid right off. The old adhesive resembled a contact lens for human eyes...but your lens might be different.
After, I thoroughly cleaned both lens elements with soap and warm water.
For the UV curing, I kept the UV light on for about 2-3 min, which seems to be more than enough as when I tested it on a sheet of paper, the glue was dry in about 10 seconds or less.
Please let me know if you have any questions! |

EDIT:
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I decided to take the dive and repair it myself.
I don't have the repair-process photos, but here are some before and after photos attached.
Steps taken:
1. Disassembled the lens (SMC-M 40mm f/2.8)
2. Located separating element.
3. Boiled water, then placed element into a insulated container (kleen kanteen brand)
4. steeped for about 6-9hrs, replacing luke-warm water with hot water every few hours.
5. After about 9hrs, got element of out water and pushed really hard (as if sliding 2 coins together)
6. Came apart with a funky epoxy-ish smell and a plastic layer (think this might have been adhesive) that resembled contact lenses for human eyes.
7. Washed lens with water/soap and wiped dry
8. placed a extremely tiny amount of corn oil on the bottom portion of separated element
9. placed the top part on it and pressed together with some pressure (which made it stick together)
10. reassembled lens.
Not sure how long this will last, but it seems to be a lot better than it was before. both photos are shot wide open!

It was the only thing I had on-hand and have heard that cooking oil is a suitable, albeit temporary, solution to epoxy/balsam separation. Of course it won't be permanent, but it'll be interesting how long it lasts

UPDATE: Got the lens, finally. Perfect, new, and all the plastic/tape where they needed to be. I just got refunded the delivery charge as well. But but lesson learned.

haha that just means napkins. What we (US) call napkins others call serviettes. Similar to how Canadians call beanies, toques.
