Sorry to bring up an old post, but I just bought the Pentax D-LI122 battery from BH and it works perfectly with the original Q as well as charging normally with the D-BC68P Charger. Just thought those of you thinking about upgrading batteries might be interested.

Thanks for the confirmation. I specifically got the Q to be used exclusively with the 07 lens, so the various settings aren't too much of a priority for me.

Ah I did not know that either. But I guess i should have clarified, I meant having the screen/lcd on, but to remove/disable all of the setting-

Just got my hands on a used Q and was reading through the manual, but could not figure it out.
Is there a way to disable all of the unnecessary info on the lcd screen (e.g. flash, iso, ss...etc.) so that I can just have a clean, no-nonsense, live-view screen?
all the info is really distracting.

Like the picture of ropes!
Could you give us a run-down as to what lens/adapters/ex. tubes you used for the smaller 52mm set up for the Q? It's a bit hard to distinguish, what's what.
I have the 72mm setup for my now a7 (previously k-3). It's an interesting lens/filter, I find it a little difficult composing with the image flipped upside down in the viewfinder though. |

Thanks for suggesting which tools I need in the future. During this repair, I definitely felt the limitations of the tools/things I was working with. I'll keep that in mind, not sure if this will blossom into anything more than fixing personal lenses, but that's good to know there is a market for it!

I tried my hand at my first lens repair and what I thought was fungus, turned out to be balsam separation (see 12a/b)
For the 40mm, the only "doublet" element can be accessed through the rear of the lens, so dissambling the ring in the front of the lens is unnecessary, unless you have to for your own lens.
As you can see I am not a professional and I know I'll be roasted for the tools used, but that is all I had on hand.:D
Aside from the tools, you will need an optical adhesive (I bought on amazon) and a UV light (also bought on amazon (bulb only).
To get the doublet apart, I steeped the element in a insulated water bottle with boiling water for about 6-9hrs. I would change the lukewater every few hours with fresh hot water.
When loose enough, I pressed hard against the lens as if rubbing 2 coins together and it slid right off. The old adhesive resembled a contact lens for human eyes...but your lens might be different.
After, I thoroughly cleaned both lens elements with soap and warm water.
For the UV curing, I kept the UV light on for about 2-3 min, which seems to be more than enough as when I tested it on a sheet of paper, the glue was dry in about 10 seconds or less.
Please let me know if you have any questions! |

Yes they are (the soft one is before and the sharper one is after). I just received some UV optical adhesive in the mail, so I'll be replacing it with proper optical adhesive shortly. Corn oil worked well when I went shooting a few days ago. Optically everything was quite sharp, albeit, I'm not much of a pixel-peeper and just shoot casually. I would recommend corn oil as a short-term solution if you have a separating/separated lens element until you find something more appropriate.
Here are some photos I took with the corn-oil [A7, Raw converted to jpeg]. I'll try to provide an update on the adhesive application process soon. I don't think aligning it is as difficult as others say it is as there is a metal ring that holds the element in place in the lens. |

Does anyone know why this "Barn" is built/added on so strangely? |

It was the only thing I had on-hand and have heard that cooking oil is a suitable, albeit temporary, solution to epoxy/balsam separation. Of course it won't be permanent, but it'll be interesting how long it lasts

EDIT:
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I decided to take the dive and repair it myself.
I don't have the repair-process photos, but here are some before and after photos attached.
Steps taken:
1. Disassembled the lens (SMC-M 40mm f/2.8)
2. Located separating element.
3. Boiled water, then placed element into a insulated container (kleen kanteen brand)
4. steeped for about 6-9hrs, replacing luke-warm water with hot water every few hours.
5. After about 9hrs, got element of out water and pushed really hard (as if sliding 2 coins together)
6. Came apart with a funky epoxy-ish smell and a plastic layer (think this might have been adhesive) that resembled contact lenses for human eyes.
7. Washed lens with water/soap and wiped dry
8. placed a extremely tiny amount of corn oil on the bottom portion of separated element
9. placed the top part on it and pressed together with some pressure (which made it stick together)
10. reassembled lens.
Not sure how long this will last, but it seems to be a lot better than it was before. both photos are shot wide open!

Just a post on Pentaxian users' shooting method.
When I first got my k-3 (effectively switching from film to digital) I relied heavily on the green button to meter/adjust my shots as I only had m/k series manual lenses.
After some years getting a sense of my own shooting style and feel for how I want my photos to come out, I've stopped relying on the button at all.
I have read through the guide on here about the green button, and do know about all the uses of the green button, but do you all rely on the green button to meter?
At least for me, I find just adjusting the iso/aperature/shutter speed on my own works fine (or even better sometimes).
In terms of metering, is the button itself a guide for those swtiching from film to digital with manual lenses or is it/do you use it professionally.
I am just curious how you all use it, as now I almost forget it is even there.

Thank you everyone for their suggestions! I went the extension tube route and found a 20mm e-tube solved the problem. Thanks again.

I recently bought a soratama lens (What is "soratama 72"? | ?? soratama) and I'm having a hard time on my k-3 to get the center glass sphere in-focus.
Currently, my set-up looks like:
K-3 body: Sigma 28mm mini-wide macro + step-up ring + 55mm of soratama extension rings + Soratama lens/filter.
My question is, is it better to get an extension tube that attaches to the camera body or should I purchase a whole bunch of uv rings (then break the glass), then attach them to the 55m rings I already have in place? My main concern is to cut cost to a minimum.
I'm pretty sure I'm going about this the wrong way, but would anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you!

Hi all,
I've been lurking the K-1 forums for quite some time now and could never get a clear answer on this.
As I've only heard negative things about Precision Camera, and would like to not deal with them, is the dial mode problem an inevitable thing or is it only inherent in early models/early adopters?
thanks for the answers, I'm sure those who want to upgrade could use this answer as well!

haha that just means napkins. What we (US) call napkins others call serviettes. Similar to how Canadians call beanies, toques.

Hi all,
I haven't seen a review of Opteka.com, but just wanted to share my experience with you all if you do decide to purchase from them. I was looking to upgrade my collection of manual focus lenses to the discontinued sigma 50mm f/1.4 and there were the only ones to still have in stock.
I was a bit skeptical as their "About Us" page was generic, no email, or phone information at all. But with G.A.S. overpowering me, I decided to order.
I can understand a day or so in shipping and processing delay as I ordered roughly 3pm (PST) last Thursday and found they were over in Brooklyn. I also ordered with one-day air shipping.
But as the weekend went by, no package, no shipping/track number. Nothing. So, I decided to call on Monday. I got through about the 3rd time I called customer service (the automated message loops, if no one on the other end answers). They told me they had "processing problems" (which I've never had before with B/H or Adorama) and proceeded to tell me they'll ship it out today. Well, Monday went by. Nothing.
As today (Tuesday) rolled around, I'm starting to get worried. After about 4 attempts, I finally get through and they proceed to tell me they shipped it out yesterday, although I never received a tracking number or anything. They sent me a tracking number while I was on the line with them as well as stated they will refund my shipping costs and well...let's see if they get my order right and stick to their promise.
In Sum, for those looking to purchase from them, it seems - They are a conglomerate under the name "Royal Group" and classified as a "eyeglass company" under BBB
- They are located somewhere in Brooklyn, NY, USA
- You have to be the proactive consumer and bug them about your order.
- They are not really consumer-focused
- Their customer service line is: 718-954-9272 (if they do not answer, keep trying. They'll answer)
Hopefully I get what I ordered, but I will most likely never order from them again. I can't speak for Opteka glass, but their ordering process and customer service is horrendous.
