Hello Barondla,
Yes, I use an automatic macro focus rail that is mounted on a 24 inch aluminum rail. I am a very patient person, but to get all of the macro details in focus at the optimum aperture, I now use a 105mm F2.8 A Printing Nikkor lens or a 90mm f4 Tochigi Nikkor Rayfact lens that features variable magnification from .50X to 3.0X. It is perfectly Apochromatic and sharpest when used wide open.
The Printing Nikkors were originally designed in the late 1960s for copying movie film. They were $12,000 and finally discontinued in October 2019. I can only imagine what they would cost today.
Most stacks are 200 or slightly less shots. It is very easy to do with automated step motor. Lots of fun now!
Best,
Mike

Hello everyone,
I have a Pentax 645Z camera with less than 1,000 shutter activations. It is a wonderful camera and it compares very well with it's more expensive "brothers".
The only improvement I would like to see is a true electronic shutter. Apparently, this can not be accomplished via a firmware update.
The electronic shutter in the Pentax K-1 is very useful when I am doing macro photography image stacks of up to 400 shutter actuations.
This eliminates all vibrations.
Best,
Mike

You are correct. I checked the tube the optics are mounted in on the D-FA 100/2.8 Macro (WR). Very disappointing - cheap plastic! It is very strange that the external lens is metal and the tube is so poorly constructed. I guess it would cost another $5 to put the optics in a metal tube. At least the inside of the 60mm Micro-Nikkor is metal and the filter thread is also metal.
The only other thing I could do is buy the correct adapters to mount the lens to a bellows. I have a Nikon PB-6 bellows and a Contax RTS bellows and slide adapter that could be adapted (I hope). I have not been able to find an adapter to mount the D-FA 100/2.8 Macro (WR) on the Contax Bellows.
I searched all over eBay and they don't seem to exist.
I could purchase the Nikon Slide Mount Adapter for the Nikon PB-6 bellows, but they only seem to be available used in Japan for about $100 plus shipping.
Any ideas? Thanks!

I will have to add an extension tube to the front of the lens to get the focus correct. The Nikon ES-1 was designed for a 55 or 60mm Micro Nikkor.
How are you able to obtain correct focus?

Hi Austro-Diesel,
Thank you for your most detailed reply! I truly appreciate the time you took to explain the options.
Would like to use the 100mm Macro, but I have to find the correct adapters to use.
I tried the Nikon ES-1 Slide Copy Attachment and it will not focus close enough to the slide after I install the 52mm to 62mm step-up ring on the 60mm Micro-Nikkor D lens.
I am thinking a bellows would be better or an adjustable helicoid tube.
Your setup with the copy stand is perfect!
Thanks,
Mike

I am going to try the Nikon ES-1 Slide Copy Attachment with step up filter ring and a LED light panel tomorrow.
I'll let everyone know how it works out.
Thanks!

I will take your advice and go for the K-1 with the macro lens. Should work really well with live view and the electronic shutter.
Thanks again,

Thanks! I only have a 60mm f2.8 Nikkor D lens. I have to figure out how to adapt it to the Pentax K-1.
I developed 4x5 sheet film when I was in the US Army Signal Corps. We had many different development tricks. You could also adjust processing with E-6 films.
I am going to have 2 slides drum scanned to see if here is any advantage to that when print 24x36 inch inkjet prints....
Best,
Mike

Hi Eric,
Thank you for the details on your setup. It sounds much easier than working with a bellows.
I had a slide scanner in the late 1990s and it had decent resolution - 2700, if I remember correctly.
I was always a tripod guy and I used Kodachrome 25 whenever I could so the copies were not too bad. I just wanted more resolution for printing large.
I guess I will see how lousy the films were when I use the K-1. I just ordered the ES-1 and the 49-52mm step up ring.
Have you ever tried copying in Pixel Shift mode?
Thanks for your help,
Mike

Thanks everyone! It looks like thePentax Film Duplicator would be perfect. As usual, it is VERY Overpriced......
Years ago I scanned 35mm slides with a Nikon Coolscan. It was good, but not high enough resolution for large prints. I have a Canon PRO 4000 inkjet printer and I print up to 44 inches wide. More often - 24x36.
I need the highest resolution possible for my better slides. I believe a 36mp to 50mp digital full frame via a slide duplication would be ideal.
I will only do 35mm slides. For 4x5 transparencies I use a Microtek ArtixScan 1800f and up-rez them with GIGAPIXEL software to 3600 dpi. Works very well.
Just have to figure out the best combo with a slide copier attachment to a 50mm - 100mm macro lens or 75mm Rodagon-D enlarger lens.
Perhaps I will need a bellows afterall?
I am open to all suggestions. The end goal is best image quality with print output to 24x36 (MAX).

Hi Everyone,
I would like to copy my 35mm slides with my K-1. I have the 100mm Macro.
Nikon makes a slide copy attachment for there 60mm Micro-Nikkor.
Does Pentax have a similar device?
I also have an old Nikon PB-5 bellows.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mike

Good point regarding the 5DS-R. If you have the better Canon glass, it is capable of amazing prints up to 4 feet wide.
However, I am partial to the 645 aspect, as I have been a long time 4x5 view camera user.
I recently rented the Pentax K1 and it is capable of images as good or better than the Canon 5DS-R.
The only thing you have to worry about is the lack of enough modern full frame Pentax optics.
That being said, I rented the Pentax 100mm f2.8 WR Macro and it was superb and relatively inexpensive.
I hope Zeiss releases their new Milvus lenses in the K mount. They would be stellar on the K1.

Hello,
I will give the lenses a test over the weekend. I only have the Fotodiox 6x7 adapter for the 645Z.
I tested the 50mm Distagon and it looks like a keeper - even for close-ups (It has the floating lens design).
You guys are the best!
Take care,
Mike

Hi,
I do landscape and macro photography. Use 100 Leica Macro-Elmarit on Canon for flowers and macro.
I have the 50mm Zeiss Distagon and Pentax 6x7 90mm, 55mm and 165mm.
I don't know if the resolution and color correction will be adequate for the 645Z sensor.
Thanks,
Mike

The Japanese Yen has been devalued. You can also purchase the lenses in Japan at an enormous discount.
I just purchased one for 35% less than B&H!

Hello,
I am a newbie here and I would like help/information on using Pentax 67 and Hasselblad V lenses with the 645Z.
I have the 50mm Distagon and the 150mm Sonnar.
For Pentax 67 , I have the 55mm f4, 90mm f2.8, 135mm Macro and the 165mm f2.8.
Are any of these usable until I purchase a 645 lens?
Many thanks,
Mike
