Well by what you describe I understand and agree with your opinion. There are some savage construction in there.
But, Places like Ponta de Sagres, Faro (around the Castle), Olhão (near the fish market) and Tavira definitely are different places.
Because those places have ancient and unique buildings from the early days of our nation and a unique mixing of european and arab architecture from the XIII to XVII century.

All the above and plus:

- all about 50 kms from Lisbon - Sesimbra, Setubal, Santarem (you'll find some buildings from XIII century)

- and if... if your around in 28th there's a "holiday" called 'Carnaval' with plenty of street parades in many cities like Loures, Torres Vedras (near Lisbon) or Ovar near Porto.
