Best low light walk around lens.

One of the posters made a comment about his wife fussing at him about taking all of "that gear" with them on vacation. Good point.

My wife, on the other hand, makes comments when there is a particularly good photo opportunity and I'm caught "fiddling" with my gear. You know, trying to mount my flash and figure out what lens to use. By the time I get all of my gear out, the photo opportunity is over. Then, I get more comments regarding "why do you have all of the photography gear" if you can't take a simple picture? Another good point. So, this is why I'm now going to keep a dedicated lens on my K-70 that can capture those low light shots of the grandkids immediately. I've found that life happens fast and if you can't capture it, your missing out.

Point in fact. The other day, my granddaughter was on our living room rug and our dog had snuggled up to her. She was dozing off and the dog laid his paw over her. It was the cutest thing you've ever seen. I immediately went for my camera gear and figured I'd need my flash. Well, after I rummaged around and got all of my gear sorted out, the moment was over. I missed it. This is what caused me to start doing things differently. I now keep my camera out on the kitchen table. Battery charged, etc. So, when the grandkids come over and a moment happens, I won't miss out. I think this is why cell phone photography is getting so popular. This was another comment my wife made about my K-70 and all of my gear. "You could have taken that picture with your cell phone. Why do you need all of that photography gear?" Yet another good point on her part.

So, I'm doing things differently now. I love DSLR cameras and the Pentax K-70. It just fits in my hands perfectly. But I'm also reevaluated keeping a huge bag of camera gear in my closet that is not very accessible when "the moment" is right in front of me.

This has been a good thread for me. I've learned a lot. Most importantly, keep your gear handy, ready to shoot and with a lens that will capture low light and everyday photos.

So, after reading all of these recommendations and doing a lot of internet research, I've decided on what additional lenses I'm going to purchase. I want everyone to know, that I spent a lot of time looking at these lenses. I will be spending around 1K on both so I tried to really do my homework.

They are:

HD PENTAX DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited

HD PENTAX DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR

I believe with these 2 lenses, I can cover all of my low light, walk around needs. These lenses are for times when I don't want to carry around a lot of extra glass and I've seen several examples of great photos that both have taken. They will be used on my Pentax K-70 and I think, combined with this good low light DSLR, they will be excellent shooters. I also like the fact that the 20-40 is weather resistant. I find myself outdoors on lots of occasions and this will be nice.

Many thanks to everyone who opined. I did consider and compare several Sigma, Tamron and Rokinon lenses, but I want to spend my dollars within the Pentax family if I can. I have been a Pentax rebel for sometime, and I want to see this company around for a long time.

Happy shooting from Texas!!!

Again, thanks for each and every reply.

So, these are the two lenses that I've been looking at.

HD PENTAX DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited

HD PENTAX DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited

Based on the comments, I also need to consider the following:

HD PENTAX DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR

I looked on B&H's website and only see 6 sigma lenses that are for Pentax K-Mount DSLR's.

Of those 6, only 2 seem to be in the mix of what I'm looking for. And, they are both Art lenses.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Pentax K
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Pentax K

How sharp is the HD PENTAX DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR as compared to the Pentax 15 & 21 lenses? I know that fixed focal length lenses are generally sharper than zoom lenses but this one may be close enough.

By the way, many thanks to all that contributed to this post.

I'm looking for a walk around prime lens that does well in low light conditions. Particularly, shooting indoors when the lighting is less than optimal. I always find myself reaching for my camera, but not having time to drag out a tripod and set up my flash. With grandkids, the action seems to happen fast and I need a lens that can get respectable results with less than optimal light. I have 35mm and a 50mm stand alone Pentax lenses, but was considering one of the following lenses.

HD PENTAX DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited

HD PENTAX DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited

I will also be using the lens for daily walk around activities and taking on vacations. However, I keep coming back to finding myself needing a good low light performer.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Actually, the State is awash is trees. The eastern side of the state is full of Pine and Oak trees while the central and western regions are full of mesquite and post oak. I use the handle Lumberjack93 because of the University I attended. Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Tx. Our School mascot is the Lumberjack.

Well, I drew first blood tonight with the new Pentax. It was slightly raining so I took the K-50 out to capture a sunset.

I would post the list of lens's that you own and ask one of the pro's on this forum. I have always been told that K Mount lens would fit any of the newer Pentax DSLR cameras.

Well, after a long debate, I've just purchased my first DSLR. I'm coming from the Point-n-Shoot world and the Canon Platform. I currently own a Canon SX-40 HS Power Shot and it's primary use is outdoor wildlife photography. I made the jump to Pentax over Canon because, after comparing both, I really liked the Pentax and especially the weather proofing. I also like the menu layout and the dual wheels. Anyway, my new Pentax is the K-50 in all black. I bought it from B&H with the 18-135 mm lens which is also weather proof.

I have already been looking at zoom lens over 300 mm I'm having a hard time with that. Too many choices.

Any other K-50 owners out there? If you get a chance, tell me what you like about the camera and any pitfalls that you've encountered.

Hope to post some photos soon.

Later
