How many lenses do you have?

It was also guilt - I had some Pentax film equipment years ago which I threw out (gasp) due it not being in great condition/needing fixing, and thinking I would never use it again due to digital. So by buying all this stuff I have now made amends to the Pentax Gods and the souls of my discarded equipment, which hopefully will now stop haunting me.

From zero Pentax equipment a few months ago, I now have one of each of a 20/4, 24/2.8, 28/3.5 'K', 35/2, 50/1.4 (two of these actually), 50/1.7, 55/1.8, a 135/2.5 'K' and also a few Takumars. I got robbed a few years ago and was cleared out - I was going to go with Nikon to replace my film equipment but saw that Pentax lenses were cheaper. The 20mm was £116 and the rest were a lot cheaper, or bundled together for a good price. I used to have some Leica lenses which I sold before the burglary - just one of those Leica lenses would pay for all the above plus my LX and other Pentax bodies, hoods and cases. I'm mostly just sitting here staring at them at the moment though, so need to start using them now.

Cameras you avoid due to age?

I bought an LX off the auction site a few weeks ago - what I did was only bid up to £110 ($175) for several successive auctions until I got one (took quite a few weeks). That then allowed me cash left over to service it if, unfortunately, there was something wrong with it, like a sticky mirror or other trickier to fix problems like electronics. As it turns out, the one I won works fine, it will need a lube at some point but no operational problems at all (for now).

So, if you're interested in an LX, I wouldn't avoid buying one, I love mine and have always wanted one. Do lots of research first into the LX's common problems. Then, in an auction, just ask loads of questions to the seller about any problems, don't over-bid and also have a look at whether returns are possible. If not comfortable, pass and wait for another one. Or pick one up from a camera shop where you can inspect it in person and get a warranty, and then still ask loads of questions! Just because it's in a shop doesn't mean it's necessarily going to work properly.

Film and lenses for Bolivia?

I remember it being extremely bright on the Altiplano in Bolivia, bad enough to hurt the eyes.....in order to concentrate on enjoying the experience, rather than fiddling with cameras all the time, I just used some disposable cameras....mistake, none of the pics came out well, unsurprisingly. Lesson learned. If I went again I'd take a suitcase full of ND filters.

What is the best lens deal that you have made?

For £119 ($190/€150) on auction I just picked up a job lot, consisting of the following:

SMC M 35mm f2
SMC M 50mm f1.4
SMC K 135mm f2.5, with the original hood

with a black ME body in full working condition, all super-clean and virtually unused, not a bad deal, by UK standards anyway.

All my Pentax film stuff was robbed a while back, so I was going to go with Nikon this time, for a change, but changed my mind at the last moment and went back to Pentax. I've also recently bought a few other Pentax lenses for good prices where there wasn't a lot of bidding competition. If I'd have gone with Nikon I'd have ended up spending more and waiting longer to get what I wanted. I now need to put them to good use.

If you can find a Hoya HMC 24mm f2.8, they will probably come in under $50 on auction, I was bidding on one last week in the UK, it went for £24 / $38 in the end. Auction prices have been between $17 and $45 over the last few months in the UK for decent copies. I've never owned one but apparently its a good lens.

Here's a picture taken in 1987 with an MX. I didn't quite nail it with focussing on the eyes as it was wide open at 1.7 and I was trying to set the exposure as well, but it shows the capability of this lens in giving a dreamy vintage effect. There was a shaft of sunlight hitting the cat from the top left. I've no idea what the film was, I've lost the neg now. Also lost that particular lens and camera, but I just bought an ME and replacement 50mm f1.7 a few days ago.
