Resurrected K-01 as a "Back-Up" Travel-Camera

That's one thing I feel one cannot do in all seriousness...
I bought mine used in September 2014 (don't know when it was produced), and three years later it could still belt out 450+ pictures on a single charge.
It's now almost 9 years old, which is an eternity for a lithium-ion battery (always the one that came with the camera), I still use it a lot, and often forget to charge it between outings... and the battery never failed me.

Sell both and buy the 10-20/3.5 or the 8-16/4.5-5.6 :D
Emphasis on the "or" :p

I did not join that early (judging by the lifespan of "modern digital photography", whatever that means), not very active recently, but still an avid Pentax photographer :)

I'm a little perplexed about what was used: the EXIF say 55-300 WR and a FL of 420mm... OP, did you use the 1.4x converter? I'm not familiar with how the aperture gets reported (the FL apparently gets multiplied, and if that is so, you were at 300mm), but I wouldn't use the 55-300 at 300 wide open on its own if my life depended on it, let alone with a TC.
Also, you're still short IMHO, or too far.

Is a Pentax-M 100 f/2.8 lens better optically than a SMC Takumar 105mm?

I have the M 100/2.8, sadly I can only comment on that one and not on the Tak 105.
The M is an excellent lens, plus it's very very compact (even more than the vintage Nikon that Nikonians usually brag about re. compactness) and built like a tank.
For 75 $ I wouldn't have a doubt in my mind.

Pentax k3 mark 3 - bad copy of the camera at dpreview - ??

I was looking at the pictures yesterday... I find the blur to be quite uniform... in case of shutter shock aren't we expecting to see more vertical blur (i.e. on the horizontal lines), if the shutter curtains move vertically? it was like this on the K-7.

Re. thread closure... I'll leave it to the mods. It has been derailing a bit, but if kept on track maybe it can be of some worth.

I've just today stumbled upon a paper on the same (?) issue on the K-7:
LumoLabs -- Shutter-induced blur for Pentax K-7
The Layman Summary reads as follows:
"It's not about vibration or a „loose“ image sensor and a massive tripod prevents it."

Of course there's no guarantee that the "issue" on the K-3III is the same & has the same solution.

This issue supposedly comes from the shutter, and has nothing to do with the mirror, the testers at DPR even tried mirror lock.
I'm not saying anything on the test itself, I just wish I had like 10 cameras to test and see for myself (and give back after I'm done  )

I asked in the comments and they said it was off.

I don't find a dedicated geotagging device to be all that useful now - and that's not because I don't need that function.
I mean, with recent smartphones (which support a wide variety of consellations) you can get a pretty accurate track, even from your trouser's pocket.
Provided that you synchronized it with your camera - or that you know the time offset - tagging all your pictures from a single outing is a 2' job, from firing up the software to closing it.

Astrotracer OTOH is a unique capability of the O-GPS accessory, if your cameras don't have it built-in.

K-01 new owner

Welcome to the club :)

1. I second i_trax on getting an LCD Loupe, whatever the brand
2. Don't know about other DSLRs (perhaps high-end models don't do that), but my K-30 clacks its mirror 4 times per shot when using LV (CLKose, CLKopen, *shutter*, CLKose, CLKopen)... with the K-01 you only have the shutter to worry about
3. I second AfterPentax Mark II on portability... slips just about everywhere, with the XS, a 18-55, a manual 28mm...
4. It's fantastic for macro and tripod work, with big, clear indications on the LCD and no unnecessary clutter. I find it very easy to read.

Addressing a Bent Filter Thread (Pentax 105mm 2.4 SMC)
Posted By LensBeginner

The filter issue looks trivial to me; what doesn't is the fact that it probably originated from a fall or a bang.
Since this one is an all-metal vintage Pentax lens, the chances something went out of place are less than if it were an all-plastic modern thing, still I would check thoroughly to see if something's out of whack.

Sea Salt on Lens/Filter

I'd try to dissolve the salt before trying to wipe it... I wouldn't try to wipe the crystals in solid form. Since it's on the filter, it's easy: unscrew it, and run the tap as advised by others (depending on the water hardness where you live - maybe once it's dry use a cleaning product in order to remove the residue, if any).

I feel an explosion in megapixels coming now

I heard Apple moved to in-house ARM processors, and that performance is very good... that however only solves half the equation (processing power), and storage is still a valid(-ish) concern.

With 16MP, 12-bit RAWs being about let's say 14 MB each, plus a let's say 7.5 MB for a developed JPEG every three RAWs (taking into account duds, OOF, blurred pictures, safety shots, bursts, brackets etc.), that makes 49.5 MB every 3 pictures, or 16.5 MB per picture. Following this metric, 10'000 pictures take up 165 GB, twice that when factoring in the need for backup, and that is stills-only, no video (which is another ballgame entirely).
This is, if anything, a little too much on the safe side considering actual price and size of storage. I wouldn't have any issues moving to 24-36 MP (and 14-bit) a pop, but 50 or 100, maybe even 16-bit, now? I really don't know...
Again, that's just me :)

Smartphones usually have QuadBayer arrangements, so the MP in the final picture is much lower than the nominal (advertised) value.

Regarding MP count at large, I find that there has to be a balance between camera MP count, interface/card/mass storage transfer speed, HDD size and cost, CPU processing speed/RAM cost/performance and software speed in general.
All or most of these factors need to be aligned at reasonable values, otherwise the whole Jenga tower collapses.

With 8TB HDD being cheap-ish, PCs being quite powerful, SD cards being big and cheap, many manufacturers implementing USB 3 in their cameras etc. I'm starting to feel like I manage with more than 16 MP per shot  24-36 looks like my personal sweetspot ATM, but it's largely a personal preference.
After all, if one doesn't print, you can't really have more than ~8 MP on screen at a time :)

For professionals it's another story entirely, obviously.

Yup, page 181 of the English User Manual:
CAUTION: The camera stays in playback mode while the HDMI cable is connected to it. Remove the HDMI cable to enable shooting.

Plus I'm not sure 1080p is available, rather 1080i (p. 180).

It's not the only thing they castrated via firmware on the poor K-01... just to name one, you can shoot a "fast" burst of 3 RAWs when you shoot an exposure bracket but, when shooting a burst at the same exposure, RAW shooting is restricted to 1 fps IIRC.

AFAIK the K-01 automatically switches to Playback Mode when an HDMI cable is connected, so there's no live HDMI (let alone clean HDMI output).
