K1 doesn't work with AA's in battery grip?

That is another problem. I also got it, when the depleted message has vanished after some seconds. I tried to turn off the camera and turn on again, but nothing happened any more.

I could solve this problem by turning off the camera, pull the battery out of the grip, wait some seconds and put it in again. When turning on again, sometime I got the depleted message again, but somtimes I got a yellow batterie and could changed the battery setting from "AL" to "NI-MH".

With the NI-MH setting and alkalines I was able to take about 500 shots with one set of batteries, even though the battery sign was yellow nearly all the time and sometimes even red.

I also got the error “Battery depleted” with my K1-M1, using the grip with alkaline batteries.

The batteries were new and I have measured the voltage with 1.6Volt, which means the batteries are really charged. As long as there was a charged battery in the body, everything was fine and I could use the batteries in the grip. But after taking the battery out of the body, I got the message “Battery depleted” for the grip. No way to work without a battery in the body.

After some testing I found a workaround: When the battery in the body is charged and the grip is mounted, I changed the battery type from “AL” to “NI-MH”, although there where alkaline batteries inside. Afterwards I could take the battery out of the body and it was possible to work with batteries in the grip only. But I have to do this setting BEFORE the body battery has gone down. Afterwards it’s too late, “battery depleted” !

I think the camera has a problem to determine the charge state of the grip, when there is no battery in the body. At this point you should be aware, that the state of batteries is not checked, when you change the settings. To get a checking, I had to turn off the camera and on again.

It‘s my experience also. Just by turning the backside screen, with the camera on a tripod, the shown direction can changes up to 10 – 15°.

So you must not turn the screen after calibration.

Thanks for your hint, it was helpful finding my problem.

Unsharp image when on tripod.

May be it is a movement of the tripod caused by the mirror. The 12s timer does not flip up the mirror when pressing the shutter release, but waits 12s and then flips up the mirror directly before the exposure. It's quite different from 2s timer, which flips up the mirror at once to calm down the swinging caused by the mirror.

Bracketing for antialiasing filter with selftimer 2s

When I use the bracketing for antialiasing filter with 2s, the mirror goes up, the camera is waiting 2s and then took the first picture. That's what I have expected. It's a settle down time for the tripod.

But for the second and the third picture, the camera does not wait 2s after lifting the mirror. No settle down time for the tripod.

I'm surprised. What I have expected is, that the camera waits 2s before every pictures. As it does when bracketing the time or the aperture.

Does anyone know the reason for this behavior ?

Electronic shutter and flash

Today I have modified the parameters. I set my flashlight (Yongnuo 560IV) to strobe mode with 6 flashes per second with a power of 1/32, which allows up to 40 flashes. And I set the exposure time of the K1 to 1/5s. Then I started the strobe flash and pressed the shutter button. I got a good pictures, only some lines are a bit brighter than the others.

And I tried with Pixel Shift. Starting the strobeflash, pressing the shutter button, strobing until the K1 has finished PS, stopping the strobe. I works. Only some brighter lines somewhere in the picture.

Some theory: If the strobeflash has exactly the same frequenzy (5Hz) as the camera (1/5s), you should not get any dark or bright line in the picture. But normally the frequencies / times of camera and flash are not exactly the same. If the flash is a little bit slower, you will get same black lines. If the flash is faster, you will get lines with double exposure. If think, some brighter lines with double exposure are less disturbing than black lines.

But try it on your on !

I set my K1 to ES and time = 1/1000s. And I set my flash to strobe mode with one hundert flashes a second. Then I took a picture in the dark and fired the flash manually at the same time.

I got a lot of white lines in a black picture. One white line for each strobe flash. The lines have a distance of 242 pixel. So, reading a full frame with 4912 lines the K1 will need about 0,2s.

With ES, for times longer than 1/5 s there is a time slot, where the flash can reach all lines. (If you fire the flash manually at the right time.) It's similar like the mechanical shutter, for times longer than 1/200s there is a time slot for a flash, where it can reach the whole picture. Only much faster. And automatically.

When taking pictures with Image sync version 2.0.6 the connection to my iPhone is stable now. No hangups, mostly the camera reacts at once, sometimes it needs a few seconds. I can also see the preview of the picture I have just taken.

That's fine ! Have fun taking pictures !

When using the „Transfer“ button in the preview to download the picture I've just taken, the problems of an instable connection begin again.

As long as I use an empty SD card in the camera everything is fine. But if there are several pictures on the SD card from my shootings within the last weeks, the transfer of the one picture just taken pauses from time to time and sometimes it stops forever. Only pictures with very small resolution are possible to transfer.

I think, the reason is, that in the background the app tries to synchronise the hole SD card with a lot of old pictures with my smartphone and downloads a preview of all these picture !

As I know, there is not way to stop the download of the hole SD cards, even if you only want to use the app as a remote control and download the one picture just taken.

So, have fun with an emtpy SD card !

I don't know, why they have canceledthe feature. But there is a simple way looking for dust without afunction.

Use Av mode, close the lens as much asposible, set distance to infinity, turn off shake reduktion and setexposure to +2 f-stops (overexpose). Take a white paper of about20x30cm or larger, lay it down somewhere, where the exposure time will bebetween 4 and 16 seconds. Take a picture of a part of the paper from a shortdistance and swing around with the camera over the paper all the timeof exposure. As the result you will get a picture, where everythingis blured out with the exception of the dust, because the dust isfixed on the sensor and hasn't moved relative to the sensor.

But this method has a problem. Whenzooming in, you can see very little dust, which will never be visiblein a picture. And you can waste a lot of time, when trying to removeeverything. You have to check, which dust is so big, that it must beremoved, and with which size you won't see.

I've used my iPhone as remote control for K1. The connection is not stable. Sometimes I can take about 20 pictures before the connection brakes, but sometimes the connection brakes after two or three pictures.

For the test I have set the function dial to WiFi. And I have turned off Liveview with the remote control on the iPhone. Then I took as much pictures as possible.

When the connections brakes, the camera's WiFi (not the iPhone !) is confused. The monitor of the camera show's WiFi is on and the blue WiFi lamp is on too. But that's not real ! When turning the setting dial once, the monitor show's off, but the blue WiFi lamp keeps on ! When turning the setting dial a second time, the monitor shows, that the dial is turning, but according to the monitor, the WiFi keeps off, while according to the blue lamp, WiFi keeps on.

Going into the setup-menu, the menu show's WiFi is on. When trying to turn off WiFi by menu, the camera stops working, displaying „Data being processed“ forever. The only way to go ahead is to turn off the camera and turn on again.

Afterwards it's possible to turn on WiFi by the setting dial and reconnect with the iPhone and do some more shots until the camera is confused again.

Alternative choice for Ricoh Image Sync App - Pentax Photo Sync

I had the same problem with Ricoh ImageSync on my iPhone. When trying to transfer one picture from the K1 to the phone, the app downloads a preview of ALL pictures on the sdxc-Card before asking me, which picture I want to transfer.

No way to stop the preview ! I just can wait for the end of transfer with a rate of three pictures a second. Really long time ! This app works fine as long as there are only few picture on your card. But I didn't find a usable solution for a sdxc card, which isn't nearly empty. The other apps I didn't tested, because there was no hint in the manual, that it's possible to select a picture without the transfer of all previews. So I assumed, that they will have the same problem with the preview.

At the end I used my old EyeFi card in the second slot of the camera. When I want to transfer a picture to the phone, I select the picture with the camera. The camera can handle a sdxc card which is nearly full. No problem. I make a copy from this picture to the EyeFi card in the second slot. The cards starts it's own WiFi and sends out this one picture at once. The iPhone catches it with the Keenai app. Done. (But you need a second slot. :()

Shutter Count Maximum

I believe, that most cameras had the same one problem, which causes their end:

After some time, there is a better one.

And after some more time, there is a much more better one.

That the natural end of most cameras I think. So I have stopped thinking about shutter count and enjoy taking pictures. :)

Thanks for your hint to copy thepictures to a second, empty SD Card and reduce time for preview. I've tried now with version2.0.3, but it's tricky:
  1. Turn off camera, insert second card

  2. Turn on camera, copy the picture you want to send out to the empty card

  3. Turn off camera, remove main card. Don't try with main card in camera, image sync will freeze.

  4. Turn on camera, turn on Wifi

  5. Select the right Wifi onyour Smartphone

  6. Use image sync to transfer

  7. Turn off camera.

  8. Send out your picture with a messenger

  9. Insert main card again to camera, remove second card. Don't try with second card in camera ! The camera will use it for saving your pictures from now on and tomorrow you won't have an empty card any more.

  10. Don't forget your second card in the restaurant.

Yes, that works, but it's not reallythe way I wanted to handle my camera for long time.

On the other hand, is it that big dealfor image sync, first to ask for one folder of the main card and thenstart preview with this folder only ?

Or, as an other proposal, touse the copy function in the camera, making it possible, to copy notonly to the other SD card, but to 'copy to WiFi' also ?

For a long time I've wished, that I cansend out my pictures during a journey. Send out that picture I took one hour ago with 300mm from a rare bird for example. Send out as every smartphonecan send out it's pictures.

And I can imaging, that there are many other users with thesame wish. So please, make it easy to use to transfer a picture to a smartphone..

I have checked the time for preview from K1 to iPhone SE within a distance of 20 cm. I have used an SD card with only one folder containing 500 pictures.

The preview for these pictures needs about two and a half minute (2:39).

Assume you have started your holiday with an emtpy SD card. Now you have been on holiday for a week, and you've made about 2000 pictures. This means, you have to wait about 10 minutes before you can download the one picture with the children and the icecream you've just made and send it to grandma. :(

Works fine with nearly empty SD cards and iOS. :)

Same old problem with cards containing several hundreds of pictures, no return from loading the preview. Now way for selecting as special folder of SD card and go ahead. :( Hopefully next version.

I have tried this App for the first time with an iPhone SE. I wanted to transfer one single picture to my phone and send it out by social media.

The connection with camera wifi was ok, the app detected the camera without any problems. But when I used the function "Cam Images" for transfer, the app started at once to make a preview of the whole SD card ! Hundreds of pictures on a big SD card ! No return within a resonable time !

Is there any possibility to select one folder before starting the preview ? Or to type in just the number of the picture I want to get ? How can I avoid the preview of the whole SD card ?

That's my experience also. My Pentax batteries (1860mAh) have more capacity than other batteries that I bought with a printed value of 2800mAh.

But the ratio of price per capacity normally is better from other vendors, even if you keep in mind, that they over-promise their capacity. So, it's a difficult decision, what to buy.

It's a nice blue picture you haveshown. I like this blue and yellow.

In my opinion it's absolut normal to find some little grain in blue color at 100% zoom. Even at 100 ISO and with wide aperture also. Especially when the blue is dark, going to black. I guess, you find the grain in the edges of your picture. Blue tends to be grainy.

There's a simple solution for your problem: Enjoy your picture, don't look for this kind of grain. :)

Several weeks ago I've checked my batteries with K3 and the internal flash on full power.

Every 20s I took a picture until the camera turned off. Focus, flashpower, time and aperture were set to manual, no livewiew.

Result:
* With the three batteries of Pentax (1860 mAh) I got the most shots. The number of shots were similar, even though using time was very different.
* With the two batteries of DSTE (2800mAh) I got less shots, even though they are only one year in use and should have more capacity.
* With the three VHBW batteries (1300mAh) I got fewest shots, but they are much older than the DSTE.

I did some testing with K3 + 300mm last year and it has the most blur at about 1/100s.
For shorter times the blur was less, until at about 1/320s the ISO blur rises.
I noticed, when laying the camera on a solid desk, there is less motion blur. When puting some weak thing between the camera and the desk, the blur rises.
When mounting on a tripod, there is less blur when fixing at the camera compared to fixing at the lens.

Interval with 2sec delay?

Since K5 I wished, that the internal intervalometer isn't a drive mode, but a separate screen. So that I can combine it with other drives modes, in particular with 2 sec mirror lock, when the camera is on a tripod, taking pictures with a long focal length when the sun goes down. Some day I bought an external one and everything was fine. Only one more part to carry and one part more, which can run out of batterie.

But until now I didn't understand, why the internal intervalometer must be a drive mode. All other drive modes can be combined, if I use an external one. Why shouldn't it work with an internal ? Only a few byte of firmware I think.
