Sorry, folks, this is pretty fundamental, but I dont get it. I dont understand how those super expensive wild life lenses can be of fixed mm size. Lets say you are hiding in the bushes trying to take a picture of your subject far away -- you aim with your 500mm lens --- and either that bird is too giant because you are too close, or too small because you are too far away. Am i right? So shouldnt all that stuff have a mm zoom "range" to it? I have one prime 50mm lens -- and I do a lot of walking to and from my subject. I dont mind because this is under "normal" city/suburbs environment. How does this work when you are standing on the shores of the river?
Sorry, I know this is a stupid question.
thanks

So just to provide an update -- the guys in California I was referring to did fix it. Total cost $135, had taken about 2 weeks including the shipping time both ways. Very happy.

THank you for your response.
Yes, I am in the States -- NY, in fact. This is the place I am referring to in California. He specifically talks about this block failure: Pentax Camera Repair - Aperture Control Repair
The reason it caught my eye is that someone else had mentioned that they had it fixed for a flat fee of $100
thanks

Hey, folks. So I have K50, about 2 years old, about 4000 pictures taken. Recently, my LCD started showing (now and then) all black pictures. I see the flashing yellow underexposed silhouette of my subject, but thats it. Today, I went out, and thats all I was getting. I tried it in Manual, Auto and AV modes, with flash and without --- the aperture just doesnt stay open long enough. So what do you say? Is that what a lot of folks are having an issue with? Where did you fix it and what did you pay? How long did it take? I found some place in California that fixes it (supposedly) for $100 -- are they trust worthy?
Thank you all.

sorry for the question. I just got the lens -- kinda hefty. In any case, I have managed to take off the L shaped tripod support thingy. Does the cast iron metal ring come off as well off the lens or I am stuck carrying it even when not using a tripod ?
Thanks a lot.

I have pentax k50. I was reading in one of Scott Kelby's books that you can lock the mirror up for extra sharp shots -- does this functionality exist on k50? I know you can do that as part of the sensor cleaning exercise, but i thought there might be a more menu friendly way of doing this. Any ideas? Thanks

My September 2015 entry, "night time is the right time". For those of you not from NY, this is the park where Occupy Wallstreet morons had defecated and pissed for weeks demanding equal share from other people's wallets
