Properly cleaning lens elements

Thanks for all the help!

The fungus seems to not have left any traces thankfully, there's just a lot of dust and faint cleaning marks.
I reassembled the lens entirely and it doesn't appear to affect the pictures, it's driving my OCD nuts though...

Thank you for the long write up dcshooter - I'll follow your advice :)
The tape seems like a pretty nifty trick!

Properly cleaning lens elements

Hi everyone!

I recently purchased an old 50 1.4 M on ebay, and unfortunately it has a bit of fungus.
I took it apart and cleaned the fungus off with some alcohol, but I can't seem to get the lenses I took out clean.
I've tried using Zeis lens wipes, Isopropyl alcohol, microfibre cloths, but small whiteish specs are visible when I hold the lens up to a bright light.

Is there any way to clean a lens element without leaving these behind?

I may be entirely wrong here, but from my understanding the shake reduction in video mode does not actually shift the sensor around (in contrast to the K5) - it's purely software.

Thanks for all the tips!

I'll definitely need to practice around with the latching mechanism and the ball head before going out, messing up and having my camera smash into the ground does not sound pleasant at all. Keeping the neck strap on sounds like a rather good idea.

I believe it should come with the actual plate, otherwise I'll just grab one off of ebay.

I hadn't realized there was no friction tension adjustment - that does sound like it could lead to some unfortunate issues. If it doesn't work out I'll sell it back and get a new one - I was mostly getting this for the legs which appear to have a good reputation.

It was with a head (a Manfrotto 486RC2) - we'll see how it turns out. I had the fortunate luck of stumbling across this auction as it was not listed / categorized in the tripod section by the seller, which probably contributed to the lower end price.

Thanks for all the replies!

Unfortunately my budget is a bit tight, so I decided to get a reasonable tripod and upgrade the ball head later on when I've got the funds :)
Ended up finding a Manfrotto 190 on ebay for 50 bucks, which seemed like a pretty good deal! I should have it soon, and I'll report back on it's sturdiness!

I'll definitely consider getting an Arca-Swiss compatible ball head.

Thanks for all the replies!

I've been prowling around on ebay, and there are a couple Manrotto 190s that seem to be pretty good value for money.
Typically I mostly use my tripod in conjunction with some fast primes, so heavy lenses shouldn't be an issue.

Hi everyone!

I've acquired a K3, and unfortunately my el cheapo tripod doesn't quite cut it any more.

I'm looking for a fairly sturdy tripod (I'll mostly be using this for long exposures) and a ball head - ideally all for around $150.
Portability is definitely a plus - ideally the combination would be under two kilos and not ridiculously big.

I've found a few possible candidates - namely the Manfrotto 294/3, and the Benro Travel Angel.

Does anyone have any recommendation for either of these tripods? (or any other one for that matter).

Thanks!
