I like it. I do wish the picture looked older (without regards to retaining detail) and that Luigi stood out more. I tried some PP on your shot with that goal in mind, I hope you don't mind, if you do just let me know.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment.
Gary and Ash, I agree about the straightening, it was obvious after it was pointed out, I am not sure how I didn't notice before.
As far as the HDR, I realize everyone has different opinions about it. Speaking for myself, I like it fairly heavy at first (like this shot) and then the effect starts to wear on me. By now, I am fairly tired of looking at this shot already.

You are right about the number, thanks for the correction. I am pretty sure they are not rounded though, as I remember getting hexagonal oof highlights stopped down a little, although I have sold my copies (and kept the fa50 1.4) so I can't check right now. Can a current owner of this lens either confirm or deny?
It really isn't that big of a deal though, it (the 1.7) is a very sharp, nice, fast lens that is relatively inexpensive on the used market for someone who wants an autofocus fast fifty.

:D I am not claiming the FA50 1.4 sets the standard for build quality, but even die-hard Canon shooters (accurate description of several of my photo friends) openly laugh at the feel of the Canon 1.8. They call it their disposable lens...if it breaks in a few years, they will just buy another one.
Have you ever compared the two, side by side? :cool: But hey, I love the Canon lens, I wish Pentax offered an extremely cheap fast fifty, as it is nice to have something for low light, no flash situations (like museums), but it isn't really my favorite focal length.

I have to wonder if the SR was enabled on all the shots. I know when I got the K-m (I was used to the K10d's slower autofocus), I had to consciously wait for the SR to enable when I thought I might need it, the autofocus was that much faster (than the K10d and the SR).

Okay, the Canon 1.8 is sharp, and a very decent lens, but the build quality makes it feel like a toy lens. Still, some of my friends who shoot Canon love it, and for the price, it is almost an automatic buy for any Canon shooter who doesn't want to pay ~$350-400 for the 1.4.
The FA 50mm 1.4 is a very nice lens. It was a great deal when it was under $200, and the current price is fair, if not exactly lba inducing. It is very comparable to other company's 1.4 50's in pretty much every way (read the various reviews). My copy of the lens is as sharp as the other system's 1.4 50mm lenses (that I have used, Canon and Nikon) at all apertures. It is a very good lens with one significant flaw (purple fringing at wide apertures in high contrast situations). Still, taking all characteristics into consideration, it is as good as the competition.
The Pentax AF 50mm 1.7 lenses (unfortunately discontinued) are great. Extremely sharp and sharp even wide open, only a bit slower than the 1.4, but the bokeh stopped down isn't that great unless you like pentagons. The price on the used market is also not too bad (granted, it is still more expensive than the Canon 1.8 new with warranty).
So if you are looking for a less expensive autofocus fast fifty, I once again recommend the 1.7. But, if you find the 1.4 at a good price, don't pass it up, it is also a very good lens and has a few advantages over the 1.7 (speed, bokeh,...1.4 bragging rights...lol).

Pentax-f 50mm 1.7
You can usually find this lens used on Ebay for $125-150. VERY, VERY sharp lens (I have owned the cheap Canon 1.8, and I know it is sharp as well) and the build quality is better than the Canon (the Pentax lens is uglier though, imo :D ) It only has five aperture blades though (if I remember correctly), so the bokeh isn't always the best when stopped down a little (again, like the Canon, if I remember correctly).

Thank you for taking the time, both to comment and work on the shot. Unfortunately, I think this is a scene I will just have to repeat with a little more thinking before I shoot. Although I do like how you see the scene, I am still stuck with very soft corners/foreground.

Well, yes and no, depending on how closely you view it. This is what caught my eye originally. If I downsized it enough...or maybe I am just "working" too hard. LOL

Hi,
I like the shot, but would rather have an angle the excluded the sign/placard. I don't know if that was possible or not. Just a personal preference, I am sure others will disagree.
On another note, have you tried to recover the highlights at all. Here is my attempt on your jpeg (including halos and all :) ) You can probably do better with the raw file, if you want to.

I wasn't sure whether I should put this in abstract or nature so... Anyway, tried a little bit of cross-processing and other PP, trying to make it a bit surreal. I think it looks more comical than anything though. One thing I really don't like at all is the colored rocks/wood interfering with the subject. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the comments Frank and Ash, and what you both are saying makes perfect sense. I have worked on this shot a little more but I am not sure if it is improved, or I just need to remember to bring a tripod and pay more attention to my settings and the time of the day next time. Any thoughts.

I actually kind of like the distortion, but I have tried a crop somewhat following your suggestions on composition. Of course, if I would have zoomed in a little (and angled my lens less, it was the Sigma 10-20), the distortion would have been less, but I DO kind of like it.

Wish I would have brought my tripod to use a slower shutter speed (and smaller aperture), but...I didn't. :(

re: M42 lenses
Some M42 Mamiya lenses have a sort of "lip" around the lens mount. They will work on Pentax M42 film cameras but won't mount all the way using the m42 adapter on K-mount cameras. They don't screw all the way on and are loose, so I would try Mamiya lenses before buying them, or I guess you could dremel the lip off. :eek:
I am not sure if other M42 lenses have this problem, but I don't think they do, I have never came across this with anything but some Mamiya lenses.
