Camera charging in national parks

Couple of things:

First, this is going to sound harsh, but I always carry way more fresh batteries than I need. It's an expense, but missing a shot for want of batteries is just brutal.

Second, you didn't mention which model you have, but everything that I own apart from my K1 and K3iii will eat AA batteries in the grip. That's a great backup option.

All that said (and to answer your question), there are lots of options to charge in the vehicle - many of which have been mentioned. The 12v from your rented truck will provide enough amps to charge quickly as you move from place to place. But do buy more batteries. I don't think you'll regret it.

If you lost all your camera gear in a fire ...

Would depend on *how* the gear was insured. My policy has a "replacement value" rider. And that means getting whatever is current at the time (had some tools stolen and they were fantastic about it).

So...if I lost my bodies and lenses, I probably could afford several different systems (of varying brands - bought gently used).

But...at the end of it all, I'd stick with Pentax. I'm already past the steepest part of the learning curve with most of my gear. And I shoot to shoot. I shoot because I enjoy it. Because shooting takes me somewhere good.

And I'm getting older. I want to shoot...not to spend several years mastering the nuances of new systems and UIs. Figuring out the quirks and how to make them work for me.

Is photography dead?

In reading this thread, it's amazing how much of it I find irrelevant. Not the comments. I've enjoyed those. Very insightful people on this forum and in this thread.

But more at the notion of photography being "dead". It may be for most others in the world. Dunno. Strange space to be in when everyone has a camera in his pocket. But for me...the way I live my life...if a day goes by when I'm not shooting and learning more, I really regret it (and the winter's rough for me that way). This is the only 2022 that I'll ever have...and I've got a few cameras and a pile of lenses. And it's going to be a great year for photography for me - dead or not. (Just got back from a winter Yellowstone trip.)

And the other thing...a certification? I need someone else to tell me whether I'm adjudicated worthy to shoot? And I've got to be a master of Photoshop to be a shooter?

Maybe I'm getting old. But I just don't give much of a darn what others think any more. I care lots if I'm getting more and more keepers...and that the keepers are getting better and better. But the rest of it? Nope. Not a bit.

YMMV. But you all have cameras and lenses. You've all taken remarkable shots. You've all improved with time and work. That matters. Not much else does.

SMC Pentax-FA* 28-70mm F2.8 AL - Simple repair but need parts

Thanks for the replies. Finding a button and the judicious use of superglue seems to be the right answer. Although I really hate to do that. And forgive my ignorance, but am I reading right when I think that the button and switch do nothing on a modern DSLR?

Two other questions:

1. That little bit of metal that the button activates when pushed could be put back upside-down. But I don't know which way it was in originally. Or if it matters.
2. I have an FA 28-80 (awful lens) that has no button. It's silver. So I'm not sure which of all the lenses I should be looking for on which to find a replacement button.

SMC Pentax-FA* 28-70mm F2.8 AL - Simple repair but need parts

I bought a lot (five, I think) of FA* lenses today and I was just stoked! They're in absolutely pristine condition across the board except...

The SMC Pentax-FA* 28-70mm F2.8 AL fell apart a little when I took off the hood to inspect it. Apparently, one of the clips had come off of the cover (black - shown in the image below) and everything fell to the ground. I was able to find the cover and the tiny metal piece that the button touches when it presses. But...the button was nowhere to be found. It was the only lens not in a bag or original box.

All I really need, I think, is the cover (it won't stay on because the one clip is broken) and a button. Otherwise the lens is absolutely perfect.

Does anyone know who might have those two parts? Or, better, has the parts and would be willing to install them for me? Seems such a shame to have such a perfect copy of the lens sitting here but effectively useless :(.

Thanks in advance. And here's an image of what I'm talking about (grabbed off the 'net and then annotated by me):

The thing that keeps me in Pentax is my library of lenses (started in 1985). I couldn't switch if I wanted to.

So...if I were Pentax and thinking about the next generation, I'd come up with something unique at the entry level...and get the next generation hooked into the brand that way.

Thanks so much for the replies. I think, for now (after having read a number of threads here and elsewhere), I'm going to go with the Kingston React Plus. It's a v90 that's supposed to have very fast write speed as well as be very reliable. I've shot SanDisk nearly exclusively for a while and liked those. But the price point and performance on the Kingston makes the most sense to me for this purchase. Can't wait to see how the combo does!

I shoot in burst mode a lot. A lot lot. And one of my frustrations is waiting for the buffer to clear.

So if anyone might suggest an SD card or two that will maximize that first slot in a new K3 iii, I'd be grateful.

Yes, way more value than 1.8K on the Subaru. In fact, my last service was about $1,500 U.S. (including a set of new tires) and I was happy to pay it.

I don't know if I should make a new thread or ask here...

I have number 1 in the picture above. I've done the requisite scraping and still no dice.

What I have noticed is on both sides of the TC, most pins are flush with or below the flange. Using a toothpick, I tested the spring in each and all have travel, but maybe not enough to make contact.

I'm reluctant to take it apart (I'm no surgeon) but will if necessary. Are the low pins a problem? And if so, is that something I can fix by disassembling?

Thanks

So there might be a compromise thought here:

Used to be that 100K miles on a car and it really didn't owe you any money. It was "worn out". You can argue about that, but the notion of "duty cycles" is real.

With that in mind, a couple of my K-x bodies have more than 150K actuations (I think - ballpark/close). I think four of the six are at or over 100K. That's lots of camera miles.

So, if I have a K-3 that's at 120K or so and gets silly, do I get a shutter rebuild (no idea about the cost)? Or find a "low mileage" one and replace it?

The difference that I'm seeing here isn't the idea of "too expensive to fix" but, instead "worn out" - doesn't owe me any money - have extracted the value from it in a way that satisfies me.

(And, of course, there's the notion of "obsolete". My K-x bodies, when compared (if only by MP) to the K-3s or K-1 are, effectively, "obsolete". Mechanically sound, perhaps - but by many standards obsolete (in a way that a '77 John Deere tractor may not be).

Lenses, on the other hand, don't have "duty cycles" (well, the AF may...and the zoom mechanism). They don't "wear out" nor do they become "obsolete". My 50mm M 1.2 takes stunning shots when I get lucky with the focus (obsolete?? maybe?).

I'm yammering now. But the point that I'm trying to make is that if I get a prosumer body past 100K clicks, it's returned its value and then some. Not "disposable" but "spent".

(in other news, my '05 WRX has 180K on it...still blasting along...)

I don't mind at all. I hate swapping lenses.

I think I had/have six K-x bodies before finally making the jump to K-3. I have four of those, all of which I got used (inexpensively). I'd rather be a generation or so behind with four or so bodies - so I don't have to swap lenses.

Not sure what will become of the K-x fleet. Gave one to a neighbor who was interested in getting started.

Think it's time, finally, for me to be getting into some K-1s. As I can manage.

First, apologies. I hate it when people ask for advice, get good advice, and don't return to the thread with the outcomes. I appreciate all of the input and diagnostic work.

Have had a rough summer and just getting to this again. It appears to me that it's only in two lenses. And both lenses have sticky blades. One is an older 300mm DA and the other is my 100mm 2.8 WR thing. I bought it from a third-party vendor, though, on Amazon in 2014 and don't think there's any chance of warranty. I love both lenses and would like to get them repaired. (I think leaving them in a hot car was the culprit???)

Again, thanks so much for the input here. And sorry about the bad diagnostic data I provided. Ugh.

Recommendations for a reliable place that might fix these lenses?

Bought one a couple of months ago in the for sale section for my wife for her birthday. I think I paid $180.00 (US) plus shipping.

Monday, she stumbled in the garden, broke her foot, and landed on the lens. She was so thrilled with it on her K-1 and is pretty distraught over destroying it.

If you've got one that you don't use in that price range, I'd be happy to buy it. And she'd be thrilled to have it replaced.

Thanks tons.

Steve, thanks for taking the time to think that all through - and articulate it so clearly. I understand, conceptually, what needs to be done.

I'm kind of jammed up today, but I'll mess with it this evening or early tomorrow and report results.
