Wow, can only hope the Australian pricing is just as aggressive - or alternatively that there is a major improvement in the exchange rate by April!

I'm sorry, but you are truly mistaken, and possibly even delusional, to argue those things.

Try to avoid getting bogged down in comparable magnifications, or scaling, or whatever laws of physics you think are supporting your arguments. They're probably not. Here are a few simple FACTS:

1.) At the same sensor size, using a sharp enough lens, 36-42 megapixels will SEE AND CAPTURE more detail than 12-16 megapixels. Period.

2.) All of the champions of dynamic range are high-res sensors. Both Nikon and Canon flagship 16-18 MP sensors fall short of the 24, 36, and 42 MP sensors from Sony, both in lab tests AND IN THE REAL WORLD. Simply put, dynamic range appears to be almost completely independent of pixel density. (However it has EVERYTHING to do with whose technology is in the sensor! *cough* You know who I'm talking about *cough*)

Yes, the K-5II had an amazing sensor. So did the Nikon D7000, which shared its sensor. That was a result of its specific generational design. The K-3 falling a bit short of the K-5II in some regards is only a small part in the whole picture, though. Newer 24 MP APS-C sensors on the market have indeed beat their 16 MP ancestors. In other words, you'd be singing a very different tune today if Pentax had gotten the Nikon D7200 sensor for the K-3 II.

3.) To see the difference in noise levels between a high-res and low-res sensor, you have to really, really look hard. You have to be at insanely high ISOs, looking at blank detail-less test swatches. Otherwise, the medium and high-res sensors perform almost identically in every respect, including color and clarity too by the way.

Simply put, sensor technology has gotten extremely efficient at collecting photons. We're not "throwing away" many photons at all. And when we create huge pixels, all we're doing is marginally improving the signal-to-noise ratio, noticeable mainly just at absurd ISOs. Other than that, photons are being collected with incredible efficiency at all pixel densities, and it is in the analong-digital conversion and processing of those photons that we will be able to improve things like color and dynamic range and whatnot.

TLDR: as of yet there is no magical, significant BUMP left for new light-gathering technology to unlock. We're at the edge of the envelope, in all directions...

In conclusion: whether this new full-frame camera has 16, 24, 36, or 42 megapixels, it will come down to the generation of sensor, whose technology is behind it, and the processing of its data. These things, not resolution, will be what truly make or break the sensor's overall performance. And I'd rather have a cutting-edge ~36 MP sensor than an aging, hand-me-down 16-24 MP one.

I know it's a bit depressing that there's no FF even under glass at Photokina, and that the 645D II didn't show up either (but hey, the new Leica S hasn't got a new sensor either, we probably have to wait a little longer). But if you could just relax a little bit and have a closer look at the actual new products from Pentax, what's not to like? The K30 has just been out for a short while and has really impressed reviewers, and apparently also sells well. The K-5 II may seem very boring to us gear heads, but hey, it's one of the best cameras in the known universe made even better! In many ways the K-5 II is a better camera than the Canon 6D and even the D600. They probably can't compete at all with the silk-smooth low noise shutter/mirror of the K-5 II, the build quality is probably not quite the same, the max shutter speed is lower, for HDR geeks the K-5 is much better with 5-frame bracketing... the list goes on! (And of course the price is much lower)

What about the complaints about the Prime II in the K-5 II? I simply think that Prime M probably can't do 14 bit RAW, and of course it would be silly to introduce a K-5 II with less DR than K-5. The K-5 is the right camera if you want no compromises in still image IQ (I use my K-5 @ ISO 80 most of the time, it's just amazing how much you can do with those RAW files), the K30 is better for video. I see one bad decision from Pentax here, though: The K30 should have had a microphone jack.

Pentax full frame rumour

Sometimes I like analogies, even when they're less than perfect.

Listening to people argue against Pentax coming out with a full frame camera is like listening to someone argue that Dodge should only make 2x4 pickups with V6 engines and leave the 4x4 V8 business to Ford and Chevy. The argument seems to go that a V6 engine (APS-C sensor) can handle a heavy enough load and a 2x4 drivetrain (APS-C lenses, etc.) does well enough on most terrain so nobody really needs the 2 extra cylinders of the V8 (FF sensor) or 4x4 drivetrain (FF lenses, etc.), never mind that they use the same chassis (mount). Well, some people like to drive (shoot) off road (fast wide angle) and haul (shoot) very heavy payloads (low light, high ISO). These same people might also like the higher torque (greater light collection) and stickier traction (narrower DOF) offered by the 4x4 V8 (FF system). I understand that implementing the bigger engine and four wheel drivetrain isn't entirely cakewalk; Dodge would have to design the differentials (shake reduction), transfer case (mirror/pentaprism), beefed up exhaust system (buffer/processor), and whatnot to make it all work, but I think those are entirely doable and certainly worthwhile for Dodge to be able to regain and maintain its serious truck maker image, performance, and appeal. I like my Dodge 2x4 V6 truck, as a matter of fact I like it a lot, but one day I hope to be able to park a 4x4 V8 next to it because I would really like to have the additional capability that it offers for whenever the time calls or just if I get the hankering. And since I've been driving around with those piss on Chevy and piss on Ford stickers, I'd feel awfully silly going and buying either one of those two pickups.
