Hey guys, I think we should stick to the thread topic (firmware update 1.21) and start a new thread about useful accessories. Saying that, i just bought the most expensive bit of plastic ever, called the JerkStopper for 25€. My usb3 cable kept popping out handheld, annoying. Now it stays in nice and tight: - JerkStopper | Cable Retention System | Save Your Assets Before It's Too Late

Just updated, nothing much has changed in Image transfer 2 software (Mac user). Still cannot resize window. A disappointment there on the interface side. As the only way to use live view is through that software. Of course a big downside to live view is the exposure compensation with modelling lights on strobes in manual, so don’t use this feature anyway.
I did install and update DCU5, and although it works, it’s kind of a clunky and unattractive interface puts me off using it. I really think if somebody will spend so much on a camera for studio work, they are at a level where they will use a professional software like Lightroom and Capture One Pro.
One big improvement is the speed that files transfers to the computer. I timed only 2 seconds that the the photo popped up in Lightroom using auto export.

I bought a Case Logic backpack for my 645z. When it first arrived, i thought oh no, way too small. But now I'm really happy with it. The best thing is, that it looks inconspicuous. I don't want to look like i'm carrying around expensive gear when i'm in the city. I have the 55mm, 120mm and the extension tubes. Still a lot of room for one medium sizes lens. It has memory foam padding, the bottom is waterproof, side handle to hang a tripod, built in rain cover + a compartment for my laptop. It has a hammock system, but does not work with the size of this camera.

To date, i've installed it on 3 of our macs. One of the macs uses 10.7.5, the other 10.9.4 and my mac is updated to the recent Yosemite, all works without any problems. Just a very simple installer, the program itself is tiny 2,4MB's, a complete waste of a CD if you ask me. I would say that this program would only work with the 645z. The 645d has the earlier program, Image Transmitter 1.

I have been to Cebu in the Philippines many times as my father used to live there. I know exactly where the Pentax factory is (Mactan Island, close to Cebu airport) although I was never inside. I can say that if your camera was being repaired there, you might have a better experience than if it was repaired in Japan. Every Filipino speaks very good English and they are very service oriented.

I found this funny (not meant to be) Pentax film from their factory in Cebu. :)

Pentax 645Z tethering

I'm pretty sure you can select Jpeg (while deselecting PEF & DNG RAW's ) from the Image Transmitter 2 software to land into a folder while your RAW's write to the camera's card. I'm using Capture 1 (V7) with Pentax's DNG's just for my work flow. Works really fast but the colour profile is off. I wouldn't wait to buy this camera, the images/ details/ dynamic range/ natural colours etc are just astonishing. :)

Someone from Ricoh (EU) phoned me back today to see if I managed to get the software. After I told that I did, I asked about Lightroom tethering and if it would ever be available. He laughed and said this is the single most requested feature that 645Z users want. Everytime someone requests this he forwards the info to head office. Anyway he told me Ricoh have received the message loud and clear and get asked all the time. He couldn't promise anything, but said he is hopeful this will come.

So if you want LR tethering it's worth getting in contact with them and tell them what you think!

If like me, you don't process your images in Capture One, you can tether in C1 (tested in V7) and capture one will show your DNG's. The colour profile is off, so it's not useable to process. But for viewing, it works great and fast. You need the Image Transmitter 2 software which features live view and camera functionality. This runs in the background, while your files goes into the designated folder you have selected. Personally I have switched to Lightroom after using Capture One Pro for over 3 years. When tethered, files take longer to preview as Lightroom auto imports them. I timed 8 seconds, but that is with USB2, my USB3 cable arrives today. This works perfectly well and is robust, professional, responsive. Tethered live view works great with IT2 Software. I miss a lot of Capture One's features for sure, but it's no deal breaker. My files get processed in Photoshop anyway, tethering is just a way to review my pics instantly.

I'm getting sick of people (possibly Capture One personnel), saying that if you want a robuster system, blah blah... Phase One could have released a cheaper back with this Sony sensor and created a new market for people like myself who cannot afford to spend 30,000€+ on a camera system. Instead they charge through the teeth for the IQ250 back and say it's because of the software features they add to this (sure). It will be interesting to see if Phase One will be around or even here in the next 10 years, if they stick with that kind of attitude.

Is worth to spend the extra bucks to use Capture One, no way!

645Z Tethered

I have been using USB2 for tethering and it works really well. My 3m USB3 cable will arrive in the post today. I tether to Lightroom 5 using the Image Transmitter 2 software that was recently released. I point the file to a folder which the tethered photos go into and Lightroom 5 picks them up via auto import. I also tried this with Capture One Pro (V7), which is really fast 3-4 seconds to preview DNG's Although Capture One is usable the colour profile is off. Perfectly fine though for viewing. I decided to use Lightroom because the file shows flawlessly. It takes longer to show, roughly 8 seconds. For me not a problem because tethering a Live View saves me so much time.

What I really like about Image Transmitter 2 is Live View. IT2 is a very simple program, you can't even change the sizes off the window. But because it's so simple, it doesn't use much processing power. It has crashed on a few occasions but it restarts instantly. My solution is to use Lightroom 5 (I think 5.4+ has 654Z PEF and DNG support) with auto import. If I want to control the camera from the computer I use Image Transmitter 2 software which runs quietly in the background. I don't find this a compromise but a perfectly good working solution.

Lightroom works for both RAW PEF and RAW DNG if you setup a watched folder and enable auto import. Works well, but the downside is it takes longer 8 Seconds. But it's workable, not really that long. If i use the live view on the Image Transmitter window to set the shot up then that will already save me time. Thinking now that I will use lightroom instead of the capture option because at least then I know that the colours/ wb are true.

Here is an example of Image Transmitter 2 working (tethering) in conjunction with Capture One Pro (V7) using RAW DNG. As you can see the colours are off but if like me, you are only interested in viewing the images via C1 but processing with another application, it's really working very well and fast! I will try with Lightroom now.

Okay, now I have the camera, i've been playing around with it a bit. Image Transfer 2 is a very simple program but saying that I'm not disappointed with it. Live view works extremely well and it will be great when i'm in the studio playing around with lighting and seeing it live directly on a monitor. IT2 for some strange reason has a prefixed size so you can't separate/ change size of the view window. There are no options to select the images you previously took for example. You should consider IT2 as a gateway to direct your files into folder and for live view. You can control the camera too with various options.

Interestingly, I directed my RAW DNG's to Capture One's (v.7), capture folder and the images showed up in the C1 preview. I would not use C1 for processing as the yellows looked green. But using C1 for tethering is possible. This means I can view my images, checking exposure, focus etc while IT2 runs in the background directing the file to the capture folder. The images took 4 seconds to show, I would say. IT2 took 2 seconds. And that is with just USB 2! I will buy a USB 3 cable and see if that improves the transfer rate. I guess the best bet if you didn't want to use DNG but PEF Raw's is to use Digital Camera Utility 5 that comes with the camera or import them on the fly to Lightroom. Which on the down side takes time (8 sec's plus)... But I can't see any reason why Lightroom wouldn't work with DNG RAW, directing them into a folder and for Lightroom to instantly read. But then I've never used Lightroom, just C1 for viewing and then editing/ processing in photoshop.

Tomorrow I will set up some studio lighting and tether the camera and see how it'll cope in a working environment. IT2 did crash once, so it will be interesting to see if the program holds up.

Okay, thanks for the info. When you say unusable do you mean by C1 processing the Pentax dng? Because for me all I care about is just viewing the image after the shot, sharpness, focus, exposure. The dng's we will open separately with photoshop and convert them to tiff after retouching. So in my case do you think it would be possible to use C1 just as a viewing tool (side effect being bad colour) or will it be totally unviewable? C1 doesn't change the file when the dng lands in the capture folder (or maybe it does?! That would make C1 option unusable then). Hmmmm.... Just out of interest, how long does it take to transfer an image to the basic Image Transmitter 2 program, is that faster than Lightroom?

Regardless I am happy there are possibilities with tethering now.

Monty sorry for your experience. But happy to hear you bought a new one. It must be a great camera if you are willing to pay for it twice! I will receive mine by the end of the week, can't wait to play with it. I am living in Germany too and will now consider insurance against theft.

Hi Snapper99, IT2 has been sent off in the post to me today and i'll get to play with it at the end of the week. What file format are you sending to your Macbook Pro, Raw PEF or Raw DNG? The Pentax DNG file I tested picks up on Capture One V.7, so if i point the Pentax to the C1 Capture folder then it should in theory work right?

P.s A quick note about ordering, the EU Ricoh website doesn't like Paypal. Kept of timing out then showing that IT2 was out of stock for several hours after. Pay with credit card and it'll work out and get shipped to you the next day. Frigging CD, it's like it's 2005 all over again!

I have been in touch with Pentax customer support and they will let me know by Thursday (16th Oct), when IT2 it is back in stock. The 645z will be arriving here Tuesday, i'm very excited to try it out. I just need the tethering software to review my pics after I take the shot on a monitor and to put the good ones in a selects folder, which worked really well with my Canon 5D and capture one. By the sounds of this thread from snapper99's experience, I can do that by pointing the files into a folder that Capture or Lightroom will pick up.

If for any reason any of you are unhappy with the Image Transmitter 2 software, you can resell it to me. I'm not sure how long it'll be out of stock for and I would love to get cracking with it next week. :)
