Pentax K-3 MarkIII reveal - hacking

Interesting. While doing the text search in firmware, I noticed some references to linux kernel, but I dissmissed Linux being used immediately. Primary OS is probably some RTOS (as you found it is SMP T-Kernel) and Linux is some helper OS, however I don't know what could be achieved by having embedded linux running in the camera. But I find it totally cool.

I would like to have something like terminal access to camera for fun :). I wasn't aware of shell execution environment, but as UncleVanya says it has been here for long and nobody found any use of it.

It is fun pastime to run though the decompiled code. Still trying to make heads and tails out of it, is there a tool in ghidra to find pieces of code that references to a string data found somewhere in the firmware? For example: I've found string "RecoveryBoot" at FW location 1786f10 (latest firmware), but I couldn't find any reference to this string in the code. I would really like to force the camera to misbehave somehow, based on new information we get from the decompiled firmware.

This is some serious work! Well done. I've read your posts and managed to get latest firmware into ghidra and I am overwhelmed by what this disassembler can do. However, I lack skills in reverse engineering software, so I will probably be of no use. However, I will try to contribute to this noble endeavor as much as I can.

I am seriously impressed.

What speed SD card?

I am using old Sandisk Extreme 32 GB card, could be that is a counterfeit one; anyway, after some shots (12-20) the buffer is full and is clearing to the card. Is it normal for K3iii to become completely unresponsive in a sense, that I cannot even autofocus on half shutter press. It seems logical that nothing happens on full shutter press, but I expected for autofocus to work during buffer clear. Anyone have same experience?

Pentax 80-320mm not connecting with cameras

Mine had same problem. I even couldn't autofocus with it.

I decided to repair it myself and was sorry to do so, however I managed to put it together again and it works perfectly now. Check if the connector on the lens is connecting with the camera. If you press pogo pins (gold balls) do they come out again or they stay below the mount surface? The electronics is connected by flat cable to the connector. There is a plastic piece that is screwed onto the body near the mount and on my sample it broke and only after I took the whole lens apart I noticed the crack and fixed it with epoxy glue. I don't have any problems since then.

There is a guide somewhere on the net how to disassemble a similar lens that can be handy. Also, take a lot of pictures of the process, so it will be easier to put it back together.

I hope you will solve the problem,

Samo.

There is a lens disassembly database in this forum, that helped me numerous ties, when I needed to repair old lenses from film era.

Maybe it sounds silly, but is the battery oriented correctly? Plus should be on the inside, minus on the cover; the oposite way most of the other camera manufacturers do it.

ME Super focusiing screen for Super A / Program?

I think it is possible to make adjustments by yourself, however...

I am thinking of the following procedure: Put the camera on the tripod with lens with some wide aperture (1.8 or less), remove back door of the camera, put the camera in bulb mode and open the shutter. Attach old focusing screen where the film should be with matte side towards the lens. Try to focus on some subject using split prism or whatever other means (probably using some magnifying glass or lens to really see that the object is in focus. When perfect focus is achieved, close the shutter and check whether the image in viewfinder is in focus. If not, turning the screws for adjustments as long as the image will be focused perfectly.

There are some problems I don't know how to solve with this procedure: there are 3 screws, and it is difficult to keep the screen level across the whole frame. So I would suggest to turn all three screws for the same amount. I have no other solution to the problem :hmm:. If anyone knows better way to do the adjustments, I would really like to hear it :).

Ps.: I haven't done this yet, so this is just theoretical now for the time being.

I am sure you don't need to disassemble the top of the super program/super a. I did the same mistake as you and found a donor super program for parts. To exchange the focusing screen, you need to unmount the lens and remove the two screws inside (see https://ibb.co/vcVFYCV marked in red). The focusing screen in metallic frame will open down and you can take it out with tweezers. The plastic part of the screen is glued to the metal frame and it is easiest to exchange both.

The only thing I am worried about after exchanging the focusing screen is the calibration (three screws marked in green). The three screws are placed at an angle, so they could be reached with a screwdriver through the lens mount. By adjusting the screws, the screen to lens distance is altered until it is the same as lens to film distance. Different bodies have different adjustments made and thus by making an exchange my fixed camera probably has ff or bf.. Next step is to replace the light seals ;).

Thank you for the information. I will do some research if K10d is equally susceptible to IR as K100d... Did anyone tried that?

For testing purposes I've made an application that can be installed from Google Play for those, who don't like to deal with source code. Here it is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.penic.pkdebugmode

Wow, thanks. I will take a look into their code. I haven't ben lucky compiling gui for android from the official svn repository at sf, but I got command line working just fine. It is unpractical however to write down a set of commands whenever you want to make a photo :). For Debug on/off though it is more than enough.

It would be cool to have a phone based storage as someone mentioned on that thread. Maybe adding some exif information on gps location, etc. (for those who can't mount gps receiver on the hotshoe)

Thanks.

It didn't work. It worked on virtualbox, but this is not something I want to carry with me when I am shooting. Having a mobile phone is much better and I am happy now :).

Enabling debug mode with Android phone (in my K10D)

Hi,

I've upgraded my K10D to newest 1.31 firmware, loosing ability to fix focus issues with my lenses. Debug mode is reachable using PK Tether under Microsoft Windows operating system though. Sadly, since I am die-hard gnu/linux user and free software (some call it open source) fan, using PK Tether is not an option for me, so I reverse engineered the protocol used by PK Tether and created a patch for pkTriggerCord, an open source program that do tethering with Pentax cameras under Windows/Linux/Android.

pkTriggerCord can also be used on android phones, so entering and leaving Debug mode is possible when shooting outside without the need of a computer. All necessary patched code can be found at my github repository https://github.com/samop/pktriggercord.

As for now only pktriggercord-cli is adapted to this hack (use it as pktriggercord-cli --debug-mode=1 to enable camera debug mode and pktriggercord-cli --debug-mode=0 from the command line). When applied, the camera lcd flashes a bit and then disconnects from the program. It was also tested on rooted android phone with superuser access and it works perfectly. With a little knowledge of programming you can write gui yourself.

If you try the code I am interested to know whether it works for you or not. Please specify camera model and firmware version with your report

Note: pktriggercord was not created by me so original credits for this extraordinary tool applies.
Note 2: when using the code, you are using it strictly on your account. I am not liable to any damage to your camera, data on your sd card or if your life starts spiraling downwards because of this code.

Great shot.

A question though... How do you make the model to pose for you? I mean, what instructions do you give them?

thanks,

True. I especially like the sample #2. The grain, which I don't especially like from the film days is actually doing it a favor here. It looks so much more 3d because of it. Someone could just easily ps it out, but it make the image much worse.

I do not have the gps and gps compatible body so I cannot recreate the experiment, so I am working with your numbers. However, I am missing some information on what this numbers could be, like your location at the time when the logs were created (like what was recorded into exif when you pressed the shutter). Did you fire shutter away anyway, maybe only then the location is sent to camera? Also, I believe the time from the GPS unit is also transfered to the camera body, so also time of the experiment (at least to the nearest minute) would be great. Probably you didn't record that at that time.

Could you do another simple tests with this information included? It would make cracking the numbers much easier ;)

Great thread by the way and great findings by all. I like the RE spirit!
