My numbers are from this website, which measures camera write speeds with a variety of cards.

First of all the situations in which one would shoot at a high continuous speed and care about the buffer clearing quickly are probably not situations in which one would disable the AF :p

Second of all, the five years old Nikon D500 manages 163 MB/s, the X-T4 manages 179 MB/s, the 90D manages 173 MB/s. So the K3 III certainly doesn't offer twice the write speed of 'other recent APS-C models', in fact it manages just a bit over half compared to those with a UHS II slot ;)

Which warrants repetition of my question: why, Pentax, why?!

I do actually have a bottle of lamp oil sitting next to the shelf, and I would like to use it, but living in an apartment without a garden I cannot use it at home, and opportunities to take it somewhere else to use it without looking like a ghost from the 19th century or an ultra-hipster are sparse

Yeah man, being a poor uni student I use this one.

Just kidding, in typical millennial fashion this is only used for decorative purposes  I would like to use it when sitting under my favourite beech tree in the park in front of our house, reading a book, but I fear the neighbours may actually find out then what a lunatic I am. Maybe I'll take it down to the Isar next time we're having a BBQ by the riverside ...

The last time that happened to me the thing popped right over my head, showering me with sparkles and burning little holes into my teenage bedroom's carpet.

I did not like that.

The sale of most incandescent lights has been banned in the EU and US in the past couple of years, due to their high power consumption. No one will knock down your door and destroy your existing stock though

That would be my guess, too. I cannot imagine Ricoh intentionally not supplying one of their official local repair centres with parts of a current product anymore. I assume the lack of parts is Covid related.

And sometimes it spills, and half the Gulf of Mexico gets polluted. And it needs to get shipped around the world, and sometimes one of those ships first draws giant genitalia into the Red Sea, then gets stuck and blocks a significant portion of global logistics

Even factoring in production and all other phases of a car's life cycle, electric cars still have a considerably smaller carbon footprint than fossil fuelled vehicles:

Science Learning Hub - The environmental footprint of electric versus fossil cars

BBC - Electric car emissions myth 'busted'

In the end, electric vehicles will only be one piece in the overall puzzle of how to make transportation more sustainable and less damaging to the environment and climate - we'll also need more public transportation, more people being willing to cycle rather than have engines push them around for the shortest of trips and commutes and so on. Individual transportation will always be necessary for people living in rural areas, but in the cities there's really no need hauling one's butt to work in a pick-up truck every day. European cities are progressively investing more and more in cycling infrastructure, restricting vehicular traffic in the city centres, and most people are extremely happy with it! Air quality improves, noise is down ...

This image illustrates perfectly the ridiculous amount of space that cars are hogging in cities as compared to pedestrians, bicycles etc.:

I also don't really see how electric cars will have us live in caves again ...

Why Pentax puts a UHS-II slot into its 2021 APS-C flagship, just for it to have a maximum write speed of around 90 MB/s, is beyond me ... The D500 at least gets to around 160 MB/s ...

Funny thing - some fellow students I work with are friends with a girl named Guderian, and when one of them told me about her she mentioned that her great-grandfather had had a role in some sort of 'tank association or something'. I just stared at her asking whether she was talking about Heinz Guderian, and she said "Oh yeah, that guy! Didn't he have something to do with tanks?"

A couple of days ago Claudia, one of the doctors at the Tropical Institute, burst into our office exclaiming 'Who wants to see a crazy big beef tapeworm I just found?!', so we all stormed down into the lab (including the IT guys) to marvel at that beauty and all its clear uterine branches. Half an hour later she barged in again to ask who wanted to listen to her husband's talk on medieval plague epidemics. So we did for an hour. I learnt that the word 'quarantine' comes from the Italian 'quaranta', meaning 'forty', because without any knowledge of infectiology the medieval Republic of Venice decided to quarantine newly arrived sailors on an island in the lagoon for forty days, as that number seems to pop up in the bible a lot.

I got paid for looking at cool worms and learning about the history of plague - god, I love my job.

But what will you call me now?

On the issue of motor vehicles: I am not very interested in cars. They're noisy, they pollute the air, they take up a lot of space in cities, and I do not enjoy driving them myself.

But should anyone ever make me drive one, I'd like it to be this one:

Or maybe this one:

Actually, now that I think of it, cars are pretty cool. I stand to the rest of my points though.

That comes to x150 magnification on a scope that's theoretically capable of x300. Even with less than ideal seeing 5 mm should still be very usable on planets.

I went with the old photographic adage that the best camera is the one you have on you, and as the 6" flextube is the biggest thing I can comfortably lug around, there I went :)

No, AP is not nice! When you see one of those gorgeous shots of the Horsehead Nebula you think AP would be nice. Then you read the description: "Almost 38 hours of exposure time was required over 7 different channels over the course of 20 nights." (That's an actual quote from an article about photographing the Horsehead!)

Yeah, if you're crazy, you're crazy. But I've gathered that you can take decent enough images with single sessions of a couple of hours :D

The budget option is to build you own.
Giant 70" Telescope Built By Truck Driver - YouTube

Yeah, came across that one some time ago - would love to peer through it at least once and see what it's capable of.

The thing about catadioptric scopes is that they offer more magnification (at least most amateur ones) at the expense of light gathering, as you said yourself. Makes them great for planets, comets etc., but not for DSOs. And as I want to look at DSOs as much as planets, I went for a normal Newtonian.

You first look at scopes and propose a budget, then you read all the articles and peruse all the forums, you see what's possible, and you slowly keep correcting that budget upwards, because with just a little more size and a little more funds you can see just that much more, and then there's another option, just a bit outside your budget, and why not add two inches of opening and BAM you're ready to spend thousands on a monster of a telescope :D

If you're truly interested in getting one and just keep losing yourself in the options, just get a basic quality scope and start out. And if it's fun you can always upgrade, and if it's not you can sell it. You don't have to start with 'too big to store' - I'm not either :)

I got a random one rather than 6", because my local pet store doesn't stock them based on size. I was also told not to put it in the fridge or freezer, so that's that for cooling times. Now what? I know cats have great night vision, but I cannot look through the cat. And now that the cat is using the telescope, I cannot peer through that one either.

That was TERRIBLE advice, savoche, absolutely shocking!
