I was going to mention that. In-body charging and omitting a standalone charger in the box is becoming more commonplace on new premium camera bodies.

FWIW, Apple's iPhone uses a Li-ion battery, just as the Apple Watch and iPad does. The iPhone, and Apple Watch battery has also been known to swell even using Apple's first-party charger.
Now, let's move on, guys. There will be no more arguing over battery types in products other than the one the OP asked about: the K3III and a recommended charger.

Since the body appears to have been sent to Precision/Ricoh we shall have to see if the problem can be sorted out. It sounds as if the equipment is still under warranty or extended warranty.
Cross flashing the firmware shouldn't happen without modify the firmware binary files or flashing via external hardware. It seems incredible that the wrong firmware would be installed at the factory.

Thank you very much for the advice, I just gave a trial, switching to fast shutter speed does work out.
Guess I need to do few more trials to justify do I really want to buy the extender. IMG10868_LAN by cosmos.man, on Flickr

Check out Kobie here. He’s done some good analysis of the k-3iii focus modes.

and.... put the money you were going to invest in a 1.4 TC towards a 55-300 PLM for fast capture and capabilities to zoom out to keeep tracking bird. I found it to be an awesome lens. Still trying to get to grips with 150 -450 so understand your efforts.

Kingfishers are small, skittish and FAST. Adding the teleconverter will make tracking your subject in the viewfinder harder. It will also rob you of a full stop of light. Neither of these facts will help you get better pictures.
You have had some good advice already. The gear you have is as good as you can get in the Pentax ecosystem. Like K2 to K50 mentioned, I recommend you read Kobie's thread thoroughly. Keep the shutter speed high. Work on your tracking technique. Experiment with your AF settings to find something that suits you. Have fun!

I would agree with those who say forget about the extender for birds in flight, unless the bird is some distance away, and the light is good. Unless you normally use back-button focus and are used to it, forget that too. And unless you are very close (say, less than 4-5 metres), don't worry about depth of field and smaller aperture.
Use AF.C zone small for birds in-flight, (or Spot focus if you are very good at following the bird) and keep the shutter speed you seem to have been using - that is, around 1/2000s. I would also suggest spot metering, and link metering to focus point.
For perched birds, AF.S (spot). If the perched birds are a little distant, you could consider using the extender.
Have you read this thread: The ins and outs of the K-3 III AF.C system - My own experience and understandings - PentaxForums.com
There is a lot to take in with Kobie's post, but it is worth the effort.
Good luck!

Would the menu item in 'wrench-2' work: "Exp. Simulation LV"
See page 35 of the Operating Manual. Also, the note on p. 51, under Memo.

I don't know, I kind of consider the high ISO quality of the Mark III to be pretty close to miraculous. With the K-30 or the K-3ii ISO 12800 was a last ditch hail mary. It was what you used if it was nearly dark out and you didn't care if it was super noisy and you had to display the results at 640x480 or something. I'd sometimes take nighttime soccer photos at 12800 because I had no other choice, and I'd convert them to black and white just to salvage some kind of result.
On the Mark III that level is now 51,200, or maybe 102,400, while 12,800 looks like ISO 1600 or 3200 with my older cameras.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest. Now I just need to learn how to use all the focusing options. Kobie is my new go-to guy on Youtube.

I just received my K3 Miii and although I haven't a chance to run it through the hoops but I have to say I'm very happy with it so far, I'm still keeping my K3 and K70 but I have no regrets purchasing the Mark iii whatsoever. :)

I have owned the K-3iii for 2.5 years and smile every time I pick the camera up. Ergonomics and build quality are excellent, with superb image quality (I shoot DNG RAW).
Everything is superior to my previous K-3. A full run down of the K-3iii capabilities are shown in the Kobie contribution to this thread. Regarding AF performance for action, I have a very high keeper rate from cars moving at motorway speeds, birds in flight, to athletes (I photograph for my local athletics club). The missed focus shots have been down to my error, not the camera. For action photography I have been using the D FA HD 150-450mm f4.5-5.6 ED DC AW Lens, HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR Lens and DA HD 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Lens, which have all performed very well with the K-3iii. Apart from action photography, this camera is a superb all-round performer, with excellent IBIS and a dynamic range to match the best top-end cameras. Battery life has been very good and I have not experienced overheating. I trust this is useful.
