I took just a couple of “grab shots”. So much is going on I didn’t want to spend a lot of time taking photos.
This was my fourth total eclipse.
My recommendation for everyone for their first total is not to take photos- the experience is so overwhelming you want to take in as much as you can.

If this is your first/only Total Solar Eclipse I recommend not spending time taking photos. It is such an amazingly overwhelming experience with so many things going on that you want to take all of that in.

I enjoy macro photography and I have two primary tools: a Tamron 90mm and a reversed lens setup using a 50mm lens. I have fiddled with the 0.5x macro setting on a couple Sigma lenses but they really aren’t a priority.

I can’t recall too many, if any times that I have said to myself-“man, I couldn’t get that shot because I don’t have….”
But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t find some good applications for a new lens.
Does anyone have any suggestions about a different focal length Pentax or maybe one of the specialty lenses from Mitakon or Venus? (But not the $1300 probe lens from Venus).
I do have a rail for use with a specialty lens that doesn’t focus.
Like I said, this is not a huge priority but it is something I have toyed with doing.

Given the tremendous decline in trade shows, Ricoh not attending is to be expected. Very low return on the investment.

PopPhoto is Dead, Again | PetaPixel
I used to like the printed magazine- it gave me some useful ideas and tutorials. You don’t get the same kind of motivation from articles on the internet that you do from a physical magazine coming in your mailbox IMHO.

In this vastly contracted photography market making different colors of lenses is very hard to justify for a small manufacturer.

I am not just going by the Amazon reviews.
It is an extremely budget tripod but it might have some utility for some users. At this price I could have it shipped ahead to a location I am going on vacation at. Or as a tripod for some to use for video conferencing or undemanding work.
It could also be an upgrade for the tripod I use with the telescope I keep in my car.
This isn’t for everyone but it has its uses and it is less than what some people spend on lunch.

I like using good gear no matter what it is: photo, audio, cooking, lawn care, whatever.
But I am interested in the result, not the gear itself. Do I have good experiences and do I get a quality result?
DPR is for fanboy gearheads.

This whole tribalism over gear is nauseating:
You are not a victim because someone owns different gear than you.
You are not a superior person because you bought a certain type or brand of gear.
In fact, if you self identity is dependent on what gear you use you have lots of problems.
Back to DPR closing-other sites give me all I need with at least significantly less negativity so I am okay with them closing.

Another reason I gave up DPR is all that negativity can and has made me negative and hostile.
Literally, toxic people are contagious.
By not going there I don’t get uptight and irritated.
Especially after my mom’s long, slow, hard decline last year and me getting Covid so I missed being with her when she passed by minutes. And I mean that, literally minutes.
I want positive things in my life at this point.
I can look at photos, get technical help and share photography here, at Fred Miranda, Mu-43, etc without all that toxicity.
Frankly, I recommend this sort of strategy to everyone.
In my Toastmasters club one member’s favorite thing is to be around positive people.
I rather be around the people here and various other places than DPR.
