Signs of New Pentax Q Soon?

I think the 1/1.7 sensor format is where the Q line ends. The 01, 02, and 06 were designed with an image circle that accommodates the larger Q7 and Q-S1 sensors, but back when the Q and Q10 had smaller sensors. So it seems clear they had a 1/1.7 in mind from the beginning. So increasing sensor size would render the current Q lenses incompatible. I don't think automatic electronic crop would make sense because it would negate the benefits of a larger than 1/1.7 sensor, so Ricoh would have to effectively introduce an entirely new line of lenses. And then at that point, likely a new, larger mount. Which means.... you no longer have a Q mount.

So the Q line ends with 1/1.7. Some of the people in this thread are dreamers. I sympathize with their fantasies but the reality is what I just typed above. I don't need an inside track with Ricoh to see that much. 1/1.7 is the end of the line.

Now, will they release one more model with a Q mount @ 1/1.7 and some new features? Maybe an EFV, or a slightly revamped exterior? Possibly. But were I betting man, I would say no EFV. Part of the Q line's "product personality" is that it is small. And the original Q and the Q-S1 are essentially the same size (very minor differences), and at that size an EFV just doesn't make sense from a manufacturing and consumer point of view both. As someone else noted here, most consumers won't care. Last year I bought a Nikon superzoom point and shoot for my friend. It's a great camera with a big zoom reach. It also lacks a viewfinder. Interestingly enough, I have a Fujifilm superzoom point and shoot of specs a bit less than her camera, and it HAS an EFV. That camera is also over ten years old and at the time the superzoom point and shoot market was FRESH.... so companies were experimenting with "legacy" features such as an EFV.

But as also previously mentioned in this thread, since then the average consumer has become quite accustomed to using a cellphone screen as both a live view and indeed as a touch interface. Which is why you hear people praising cameras with touch screens... even on DSLR bodies. Also this is what led to flip-out screens, something my friend's Nikon point and shoot has (and mine doesn't), and something the new K-S model and indeed the FF has. Which emphasizes the importance on the LCD, NOT the viewfinder. Again, because of consumer perceptions over the last ten years.

SO... what does this mean for the Q line? In summary:

1. 1/1.7 is the limit. Or you aren't getting a Q mount anymore and you effectively end the line.

2. If there is one more Q, the revisions will be minor. But don't expect an EFV, because manufacturing and consumer considerations don't favor it.

I think it's more likely we will see a better mirrorless K-mount with EFV introduced instead of a final Q model. The K-01 was a joke. For its size it *should* have come with an EFV, and with a bit better build quality (none of those crappy rubber door flaps, but locking doors like any DSLR), maybe WR. A PROPER mirrorless K mount body would find a happy home in the marketplace I think.

And I am beginning to think our beloved Q system is now decommissioned in all but official terms. Buy your Pentax Q lenses and bodies while you still can. It really is going the way of the Auto 110 system.

Got my C-to-Q adapter and a CCTV lens

Got my C-to-Q mount adapter and a CCTV 25mm lens in the mail today. Was surprised to discover this lens has an aperature ring and 12 bladed iris. Also came with a macro ring.

Straight outta Eyefi:

And with the macro ring:

I've played with K mount lenses on the Q7 enough now in some of my street photography so I'm used to MC. The dial ratio is moderate. Doesn't take a lot of turns but isn't so quick that it loses fine adjustment. BTW the lens is annodized aluminum, not plastic. Feels pretty stout. And aperture and focal rings are smooth but wiggle free. All very pleasantly surprising for this China piece. This is the "Fujion" lens kit:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=350780505367

That one is lens + adapter + macro ring, same kit I bought. Looks like they have multiple inventory units for sale, so more than one of you could buy this for the moment. Took a few weeks from China but for thar price and what you get, and the way it seems the lens is performing, it's a damn good deal for any Q model owner. And you can sometimes find this kit with an all black lens if you search around on EBay... silver or black.

This lens seems like it's gonna make a great little prime for this Q7! When I get a chance to go out and take some more shots in various conditions I will update this thread with the pics.

New Q: Just joined the fun with a Q7

Just picked up my Q7 a week ago... couldn't believe how tiny it is! I have a proper Pentax DSLR already, but carrying it around all the time was a hassle. I had scaled down the usual camera bag pretty small but still. And my cellphone, as good as it is, just couldn't give me he control over shutter speed and aperture that I wanted. So the Q7 fills the niche nicely. Super easy to carry, and honestly the LCD makes quick framing of a shot easy. And I can take shots without putting it up to my eyes and alerting candid subjects of what I'm up to LOL. I picked the Q7 because it has the bigger 1/1.7 sensor, but without the weird, modern looks of the Q-S1; to me, the Q7 retains the original Q's vintage rangefinder looks. I like that.

I had some time to play around with it and take some shots. Some are edited in Fotor, others with the in-camera presets... and a couple are completely untouched.

Bricked

Cookie Cutter Cottages

Racked

Bronzed Play

A Bird In the Hand

Pedal Power

Lightening

I even got a nifty little bag at a camera shop... there's enough room for an 06, an 01, and maybe an 07 in there.

And next to a Pentax-M 50mm f2 for some size comparison...

I'm considering one of the cheap, aperture-less adapters to convert this Promaster 80-210mm zoom to full time use with the Q7' As you see it has manual aperture control. I can imagine the telephoto potential of this lens on the Q.... I can't wait to point it at the moon!

[

I'm also interested in C and D mount lenses.... CCTV... old Russian glass... and playing around with things on the Q. I've been reading in here all day about how to properly identify the C lenses (and avoid CS), and getting a feel for what I need to look for on Ebay when I start shopping. I think I will get a shield lens first, then a C adapter. Then a cheap K to Q to leave on the Promaster zoom.

I also ordered one of those vintage carry cases... the one that has the half case and the detachable top hood part. Should be in next week. So much fun, this Q series! Glad to be on board!

Let's talk lens filters

When my new prime arrives in the mail, I'll be taking shots with and without the cheap filter, indoors and out, sun and overcast. We shall se... but what little may be lost (or may not be!) seems worth the protection.

What I can say is yesterday I took some shots with both my M 50mm F2 and the 18-55 WR, with and without filters, outside on an overcast day, and then proofed them on my big monitor and nothing seemed notably different. Now these aren't "expensive" lenses by any means, but these UV/glare filters are simply "on there" with no apparent detriment. And of course, the benefits of "protection". And honestly, I'm not a professional. If I can help it, I'd prefer not to replace anything, or regard some lenses as "throw away" and treat them carelessly. My camera body is worth less than some of the lenses some of you shoot with. Yet I can take an old M and my K-50 and a cheap UV/glare filter and take just as amazing a shot with the right opportunity.

I will look into CPL and ND filters. Now, would there be any detriment to running a filter on a filter? Say, an ND on a UV? I'm trying to determine if there is any need to remove the "usual" filters I have on, not that they are hard to remove... of course they aren't.

Low cost DSLR to use with my m42 lenses

That's a silly thing to say lol... he can always get a couple WR lenses later, the K-50's WR kit lens isn't expensive and is a good (not great) all-around use for the price. And full kit only cost me $460, so he can save and go just body or save up a bit more and get the full thing. Plus warranty like people said. But having the WR gives him options in the future for rainy day shots or fun in the desert winds.

For now, my only WR lens is the 18-55mm WR kit lens the K-50 came with, and usually I have my 80-210 (non-WR) zoom on it. But there was a day with light rain and throwing on the kit lens I got some great shots of raindrop circles in puddles. And the camera did get wet!

Yeah K-50 seems to be the best buy. I paid $460 for a complete kit, NEW. So I'm sure you can get a NEW body for around $300, which means warranty and no wear and tear.

Read and watch video reviews on the K-50 like I did and I think you'll be sold on one.
