The aperture stops aren't labelled on this lens. It was wide open for this shot, so that would mean f1.4 if the front lens info is accurate. Yes, it's a very shallow DOF when wide open, and a deep DOF when tightened down.

Well the foam mirror bumper is pretty much destroyed so that would make sense. But it isn't on the outer surface of the fresnel screen.

I think the OP may not realize how crappy the quality of drugstore/Walmart scans can be. Since OP has no real experience with such services, that would make sense. OP may not have asked for more than Jpeg because OP might not know better, which is why I posted what I did. In the beginning of my scan curiosities I was also going to go to Walmart. Now I am very glad I didn't. The local Walmarts don't even return your negatives to you, and judging from people's experiences, the resolution and colorspace is sub-par.

My M 50 1.7 is married to the ME ;)

Yeah I will just have to hunt around on Ebay because I don't want a third SLR film body right now. I need to buy a second APS-C DSLR body next as a backup for my primary DSLR.

Hey side note... do any of you know how to remove the debris in the VF?

I cleaned the mirror and dusted off the fresnel lens screen under the prism, but the debris is still in the view. I figure it's between the screen and the prism. On my K-30 the screen is easy to pop out but I don't see how to do that with this camera.

I don't want a whole camera LOL... just the LENS ;)

I have this XR500 and an ME so I'd say I have good balance of SLR film body choices between those two. I just wanted the Rikenon lens to match with the Ricoh body. A bit of nostalgic interest I suppose. I'm sure in the meantime the M 50 f2 will shoot just fine on the XR500.

Having played with image formats quite a bit, I have to disagree. Jpegs lose a LOT. And you never want your digital "originals" to be compressed. Create TIFF or RAW originals, and then if you need Jpeg or PNG for web use, spit out a converted file. I've noticed a lot of differences, and you just can't pull as much detail out of a Jpeg. Maybe today someone doesn't care about that, but in a year or two from now when they start finally playing with RAW editing and PS/LR, they will go back to their digital originals and be glad they scanned into TIFF or DNG and not weak-sauce Jpegs.

Always scan in the best quality possible for future contingencies.

I just got this RICOH XR500 off of Ebay for $30USD shipped, from Japan:

After installing batteries, the light meter works. Shutter is smooth at all speeds. Timer works. Slowly lol but not terribly so. The VF has some artifacts on it... I don't know how easy it is to clean. I cleaned the mirror and the Fresnel screen on the underside of the pentaprism, but that didn't get rid of the debris. Not sure how that gets cleaned. Obviously that won't affect film images, just bothers my OCD.

I threw on this spare M 50mm f2 which I felt was a good match-up. Added a new neck strap. And bought some cheap Fuji 400 color film to throw in.

Body feels stout, seems like a polycarbonate (or was it just plastic back then?) shell over a steel frame. I think it's a handsome, classic looking shooter in black.

Anyone else have a Ricoh K-mount camera? How do you feel about them?

From what I was reading, you want something that scans at at least 4000dpi and 48 bit color. ALso you do NOT want to scan to JPEG, as you will lose some image data through compresion. You want TIFF or a scanner that does DNG RAW (some do).

The V600 has the specs you need.

I found this helpful review of the V600, but the review also has a short education on scanning concepts that I think will benefit anyone who is considering scanning their negatives. I just decided to try this, too. So I only recently found this review and it has helped me better understand what I need.

Scanner Review: Epson Perfection V600

There are other scanners on B&H that are dedicated and have carriers. I have read reviews on some scanners, and some people report risks of carrier breakage, or of carriers or slots that make it much easier to scratch and otherwise damage negatives. Read reviews on a scanner before you buy, and if there are no reviews, DO NOT BUY!

Also, there are some scanners on the market that are 14MP and claim they can "bump" that up to 22MP with software tricks. The reviews on that technology are mixed, but the real measure of what you need is based on DPI and color.

Here is yet another thread with very useful information on this:

How do I convert all my film negatives to digital? - Forums - CNET

I suggest reading the V600 review link and then the above discussion thread, as after those two resources I feel I have enough information to make a much better informed decision. So far I am leaning towards a V600 myself. Hopefully Santa will bring me one this Christmas :)

Hope this helps. It sure helped me!

Got my C-to-Q adapter and a CCTV lens

Got my C-to-Q mount adapter and a CCTV 25mm lens in the mail today. Was surprised to discover this lens has an aperature ring and 12 bladed iris. Also came with a macro ring.

Straight outta Eyefi:

And with the macro ring:

I've played with K mount lenses on the Q7 enough now in some of my street photography so I'm used to MC. The dial ratio is moderate. Doesn't take a lot of turns but isn't so quick that it loses fine adjustment. BTW the lens is annodized aluminum, not plastic. Feels pretty stout. And aperture and focal rings are smooth but wiggle free. All very pleasantly surprising for this China piece. This is the "Fujion" lens kit:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=350780505367

That one is lens + adapter + macro ring, same kit I bought. Looks like they have multiple inventory units for sale, so more than one of you could buy this for the moment. Took a few weeks from China but for thar price and what you get, and the way it seems the lens is performing, it's a damn good deal for any Q model owner. And you can sometimes find this kit with an all black lens if you search around on EBay... silver or black.

This lens seems like it's gonna make a great little prime for this Q7! When I get a chance to go out and take some more shots in various conditions I will update this thread with the pics.

^^^^ Totally agree.

That and "Is the Q line dead" or "Will there be a new Q?" these threads are becoming counterproductive to Q model discussions at this point because everything that can be said, has been said many times. Until we hear from Ricoh on the matter, it does indeed beat a very dead horse lol

What's in Your Tool Box?

My K-30 is for what I refer to as "session" work. That means whenever I am expecting to take shots that demand good results without question or hassle. Or if I am going somewhere and know that I need the specs to take advantage of the situation.

The Q7 is my "lomo lifestyle" equivalent. Street photography, or just every day use. It's small and so I can carry it around with me pretty much everywhere, anytime. Which is a large portion of the lomo ideology. I also make use of the preselect knob in the front for insta-filters so I get some vibrant and vintage and even weird results. Again, very in keeping with the lomo philosophy of photography. No, it's not film like strict lomo practices, but it gets the job done in the same way, if not a bit better. I find myself doing a lot more experimenting with this camera, both with photographic composition and recently with lenses. I have a K-to-Q and a C-to-Q adapter and it's been proving both fun and interesting to try various MC lenses on this thing.

The ME is for me a stop gap. I understand that surface area means a great deal. I don't see myself being able to afford the FF DSLR anytime soon after it's release. I will probably get one in a few years' time. So in the meantime, I decided that a simple, reliable film body would allow me some the advantages of a FF surface area. I found a couple places that will scan my negatives in and provide me a CD or flash drive with the files. So effectively it gives me full-frame optics with a digital result in the end. The other nice thing is the film body forces me to think differently about composition, and about aperture and shutter. I have been making logs of each frame I shot, with consideration to notes on subject, f stop, and shutter speeds, so that post-development I can compare and improve my craft. This has been a big boon to me when using the DSLR as I have become less dependent on the instant playback and more focused (har har) on the configuration and composition initially.

I am thinking of picking up another K-50 to go alongside of the K-30... but that's mostly as a backup. To me, the two models are equivalent because I never go above ISO 800.

Now, among the three bodies I own, I have a variety of lenses, modern and legacy. While I love my DAL 35mm f2.4 for its snappy AF and excellent IQ, I am still very partial to my Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 because of the IQ characteristics. In zooms I use my DA 50-200mm most of the time due to its compact size and relatively acceptable IQ, but I really want a 55-300mm HD WR which I hope to purchase in 2016.

I'm on a relatively tight budget as a student, but I have about a dozen lenses including some oddballs like a Holga toy K mount and a CCTV C mount (for the Q7)... The K mount system is such that you can have a capable suite of older lenses on a small budget and produce very striking results that could be used in a variety of professional applications. This is ultimately why I shoot exclusively with Pentax.

All of this isn't in a "toolbox", but instead in an antique wood cabinet with a glass door.

Signs of New Pentax Q Soon?
Posted By Suleeto

I think the 1/1.7 sensor format is where the Q line ends. The 01, 02, and 06 were designed with an image circle that accommodates the larger Q7 and Q-S1 sensors, but back when the Q and Q10 had smaller sensors. So it seems clear they had a 1/1.7 in mind from the beginning. So increasing sensor size would render the current Q lenses incompatible. I don't think automatic electronic crop would make sense because it would negate the benefits of a larger than 1/1.7 sensor, so Ricoh would have to effectively introduce an entirely new line of lenses. And then at that point, likely a new, larger mount. Which means.... you no longer have a Q mount.

So the Q line ends with 1/1.7. Some of the people in this thread are dreamers. I sympathize with their fantasies but the reality is what I just typed above. I don't need an inside track with Ricoh to see that much. 1/1.7 is the end of the line.

Now, will they release one more model with a Q mount @ 1/1.7 and some new features? Maybe an EFV, or a slightly revamped exterior? Possibly. But were I betting man, I would say no EFV. Part of the Q line's "product personality" is that it is small. And the original Q and the Q-S1 are essentially the same size (very minor differences), and at that size an EFV just doesn't make sense from a manufacturing and consumer point of view both. As someone else noted here, most consumers won't care. Last year I bought a Nikon superzoom point and shoot for my friend. It's a great camera with a big zoom reach. It also lacks a viewfinder. Interestingly enough, I have a Fujifilm superzoom point and shoot of specs a bit less than her camera, and it HAS an EFV. That camera is also over ten years old and at the time the superzoom point and shoot market was FRESH.... so companies were experimenting with "legacy" features such as an EFV.

But as also previously mentioned in this thread, since then the average consumer has become quite accustomed to using a cellphone screen as both a live view and indeed as a touch interface. Which is why you hear people praising cameras with touch screens... even on DSLR bodies. Also this is what led to flip-out screens, something my friend's Nikon point and shoot has (and mine doesn't), and something the new K-S model and indeed the FF has. Which emphasizes the importance on the LCD, NOT the viewfinder. Again, because of consumer perceptions over the last ten years.

SO... what does this mean for the Q line? In summary:

1. 1/1.7 is the limit. Or you aren't getting a Q mount anymore and you effectively end the line.

2. If there is one more Q, the revisions will be minor. But don't expect an EFV, because manufacturing and consumer considerations don't favor it.

I think it's more likely we will see a better mirrorless K-mount with EFV introduced instead of a final Q model. The K-01 was a joke. For its size it *should* have come with an EFV, and with a bit better build quality (none of those crappy rubber door flaps, but locking doors like any DSLR), maybe WR. A PROPER mirrorless K mount body would find a happy home in the marketplace I think.

And I am beginning to think our beloved Q system is now decommissioned in all but official terms. Buy your Pentax Q lenses and bodies while you still can. It really is going the way of the Auto 110 system.

I only bought my Q7 new off of an Ebay vendor I think a couple months ago. Maybe three months ago. And at the time the Q7 could be found easily in silver, black, red, and (less often) yellow. I obviously haven't looked since then because I own the camera now, but I would agree that the Q7 is the popular buy in the line. I think for a lot of Q buyers, styling is a minor factor and the Q-S1 just looks odd. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind picking up a used one in a few years at a discount. Unless they somehow go up in price.

I see limited edition Pentax Auto 110 cameras go for over $100 on ebay, so who knows. Sometimes novelty gets its own price value.

I think it's doable. You don't have to modify circuitboards. You just have to relocate buttons and switches, and pick up a few small electronic items to bridge the gap. But yes, using a bigger APS-C sensor based camera makes more sense.

Ahhh so the dial is a sort of electronic meter aperture, controlling sensitivity. The meter then decides how much light it is getting, and electronically sets shutter speed in AUTO. Right?

So while in AUTO:

A-ring ---> meter ---> shutter speed.
OR
A-ring ---> compensation dial ---> meter ---> shutter speed.

Yes?

Question about ME without battery power

Ok, so I understand that in the absence of battery power, the ME can still shoot with a 1/100 or a Bulb shutter setting.

What I want to know is, can I use this knob still?

I know that's exposure compensation... so my guess is it slows or speeds up the shutter speed. I understand that with the batteries working, and in AUTO, the camera uses aperture to choose shutter speed and that with that knob on the left, you can adjust up or down two stops worth... so that effectively speeds up or slows the shutter (since the aperture is MC). Is that mechanical or electronic? Meaning, even with the batteries dead/missing, will that knob mechanically speed up or slow down the shutter?

What I am trying to determine is, without battery power and set to 1/100 shutter, will the correction knob still adjust shutter speed (and how exactly). I'm guessing that "stops" up or down are following Sunny 16, just trying to understand that (and understand Sunny 16).

I am trying to see how effective I can use this camera with zero electricity.

I think the Q fits my personality, both in the kinds of shots I enjoy taking the most, and in my on-the-go needs. With some room to experiment with K and C and D and 110 lenses. I'm happy with it.
