I’ve been thinking about this since December, when a member told me that Pentax’s providing processing was an unreasonable expectation. My ideas are just one of several possibilities, but I believe they’ll do something. They have talked about rebuilding the needed infrastructure.

It would be another ‘master stroke’ if one of their industrial partners could set up processing for film from the camera, and Pentax sold mailers for that service. That would add demand for the camera and income for Ricoh.

I will purchase the Pentax half-frame, because my current Olympus “Infinity” is auto-everything.

When TwoUptons made the post you responded to, I looked for “Chaika” cameras on eBay. One bragged about ‘fine Soviet construction’; I’m not sure if he was being ironic or not. Nearly half of the listings talked about specific problems {‘shutter doesn’t work’}, or said the camera is “for parts only” - so “relieving the body of the lens” may be the best use for them. I certainly wouldn’t spend my money on one today.

I did have a cheap 127 camera as well as an Instamatic at one time. My 35mm scanners could digitize their negatives/slides but only within 35mm bounds. That is, I got the equivalence of mounting the 126/127 slide/negative {either horizontally or vertically} in a 35mm ‘frame’.

I wasn’t going to continue my responses, but this does demand one more: I truly do not have good means to ‘digitize’ Medium Format - my only digital cameras are “APS-C” and I don’t have an appropriate macro lens; I also do not have a tablet to provide suitable light; perhaps I could adjust my computer to do that, but it has never been adjusted, and I wouldn’t bother just for that, especially not for a used camera of uncertain future, when Pentax has a new camera ready to issue.
I am well-equipped, though to handle 35mm - I even handled 126 and 127 slides/negatives as though they were 35mm.

I’m going to wait for the new Pentax film camera. I already have everything {except the camera} needed to get a good image.
What is so hard to understand?????

I should probably review the ‘SilverFast’ manual. ‘Silverfast’ is the software that came with my Plustek scanner. They specify a sequence of prescan - then adjust parms, including levels and contrast, so you can see the result of each change - then scan, which gives best results. This is not a ‘cheap’ scanner.
I was using a version of Windows when I got the scanner, then Linux, then went back to Windows. The scanner had come with a CD, but my new laptop didn’t have a CD device; the Calif office of SilverFast did have a record of my ownership, so they guided me thru the steps to use the version of their software I had purchased - definitely a ‘class act’.

Both units have negative {covers sprocket holes} and slide {frames cover spoket holes} holders.
My Nikon unit did have a focusing step - and could detect when media was inserted too-side down - but it had to be cleaned and lubricated regularly. I’m not sure how Plustek unit works - but I have no complains about its sharpness.

In particular, both my Nikon and my Plustek digitisers eliminate dust spots and scratches.; a digital camera would reproduce them perfectly.

That is ‘photographing’ or ‘copying’;
I have a true 35mm ‘scanner’.
Besides, may be easy for those of you who have an iPad;
I don’t have any kind of ‘Pad’
- and don’t have have any intention of getting one!
I’m also not excited by my Digital Camera.

The K-3 is considered to be Pentax’s “APS-C” ‘flagship’ of its era. Besides, your words agree with my words concerning the value of manual focus when one can’t depend on auto focus, so I’m not clear on why we’re discussing and discussing this ……. I’ve had my say.

I would not be happy with a used Medium Format camera because
1. I have no way to scan medium format film.
2. The stores I purchase film from primarily sell 35mm film.
3. I have no medium format gear; I would have to start ‘from scratch’; in contrast, I have lots of 35mm gear.
4. I don’t know how long it would last; an advantage of Pentax making new cameras is it would arrive under warranty and be made of new - easily available - parts.

Welcome - you’ve picked a good time to come here.
Some of us have decided that Digital is not for us and are using old film cameras - Pentax is even talking about building new film cameras.

Your comment is in response to my comment, which ended
I ‘transitioned to digital’ as a Canon user. I have always used less ‘pricey’ cameras; with Canon, I used “Digital Rebels”. Honestly, AF is one thing Canon did well - I never had issues with AF until I became a Pentax user, so that comment - which doesn’t disagree with your experience, should be taken in the context of a user of lower-tier Pentax products.

So, your response if your experience consisted of cameras of less than a Pentax ‘flagship’ ??

The ‘Kodak’ and Alfie cameras are half-frame also, so the Pentax camera will fit right in.

Huh?? What is “KM” glass??
In any case you listed non-focusing somethings.
I suspect you meant “do buy”.
In any case, the truth is that “manual focus is for those who are not served well by auto focus”.
When AF first came out, I thought it was great - I’m not so sure now.

I got the "screw drive" 55-300 when I was using the K-30, but I got the PLM variant when I got the KP {which supports KAF4 lenses}, but I kept the earlier variant. Last summer, as our grand-daughter played in the apartment's Kiddie Pool, I was surprised to discover that the earlier variant worked with my "Super Program" camera {even though the lens is supposedly a "crop" lens}. |

I used a K-30 at one time, and had to deal with “Dark Image Syndrome”; I made a consious decision to control the aperture at the lens, so purchased a bunch of old film lenses. They are fairly small. Then I purchased a KP, and transferred most of those lenses to my “Super Program” bag. Recently I purchased a M 50mm F/1.7 for a cost similar to what would be charged here; the antique dealer probably thought he was selling an “ME” camera with a lens attached, but I viewed it in reverse - the camera was ‘free’ as far as I was concerned ….. but it seems to work, so now I’m continuing to use the “Super Program” with B&W film and the “ME” with color film, and those old {small} film lenses are in their ‘joint bag’.

There are both “FA” “Limited” lenses and “DFA” “Limited” lenses. Other than price, and the “FA Limited” lenses having aperture rings, it is not clear to me how they actually differ.

The Takumar 50mm F/1.4 lenses were quite small - and having used them on my Q-7, I can attest to their optical weaknesses - but they did have character - both the 8 element and the 7 element variants.

I totally agree. As I’ve said here multiple times, my auto-everything Olympus “Infinity” seemed like a good deal when I purchased it thirty-some years ago, but now I can hardly wait to replace it with the mostly-manual camera that Pentax is close to releasing.

Size isn’t really the issue for me - nor is ‘IQ’. I find the “FA’” lenses, even if they aren’t “limited”, completely adequate.

I had an Instamatic 100 thru high school and college - its shutter broke just before I graduated from college - and I mourned the loss of that camera. It had neither shutter speed nor aperture control, nor ability to focus but I did learn about planning a shot, and what I could have done with more control. That was ‘lo-fi’, but I could take worthwhile photos even then.
