High Speed Sync and K-3

Thanks very much for the support! I'm glad I asked on this forum. In fact I tried to do HSS with the flash mounted on the hotshoe and I noticed that the droplet weren't as sharp as I thought they would be. Then I tried with 1/180th, high F-number and triggering the Metz with the pop-up flash, and well that's what I was looking for. I can't wait to try it outdoor, so that I don't have to bother about the water spilling everywhere.

Oldbayrunner, I'll keep in mind your suggestion when and if I'll be shooting outdoor portraits. If I understood correctly, HSS is the way to go (or ND filters) in those situation.

Again, thanks for the advice :)

High Speed Sync and K-3

Hi everyone,
while I was reviewing some of my old photos, I ran into some shots that I made when I was having fun shooting some water droplet (who didn't?) a few years ago. At the time I was shooting it with the pop-up flash and I didn't even know the existence of HSS photography. Now that I own a Metz 48-1 and a K-3, I was wondering how I could try some HSS photography.

I looked up on the web, but to be honest I was quite overwhelmed with the amount information and I couldn't decide myself.

I noticed that if I put my Metz on the hotshoe I can activate the HSS mode, but if I use it in Slave mode, which means that can be triggered by the pop-up flash, I can't. Since I'd like to put the light source behind or on the side of the subject, I'd like to use it wireless or wired.

What are possible solutions and what kind of equipment would you suggest?

Thanks to everyone :)

Thanks! Because it's small or because there isn't a city in the shot? By the way, the shot was taken in the public park and the "city" is behind me and on the right side of the photo :)

Man, those snowflakes shots are just astonishing. The first time I saw them I thought they were 3D renders. I'm always amazed when macro photography shows us thing that we can't see with the naked eye.

Which camera/brand did you use before switching to Pentax and why?

I started shooting around 2008 using a Panasonic Lumix, but I don't remember which model. In 2009 I planned to visit New York for a few days during Christmas time, and so I decided to get myself a Pentax K20D which I loved since the very first moment. I remember that during the flight I read the entire manual, because it was my very first DSLR and I wanted to know everything :D. In the last five years photography grew on me and few months ago I switched to a brand new K-3.

Usually for every tech related purchase I try to gather as much information as I can in order not to regret it later. As I sad I'm a newbie when talking about memory card and I thought that every SD was the same except for write/read speed and security protocol. Well, now that I know I think I'll remind myself to check the official support page of the dslr.
Thank you very much :D

Yeah probably me too. Since with my 32GB Sandisk I haven't got any trouble since I bought my first Pentax, a K20D, I think I'll buy another one, but with a faster write/read speed.

I'm happy that you were able to resolve it, but I can't even try to "eject" it from my macbook or imac because it won't show up anywhere, not even in Utility Disk. I'll try to borrow another DSLR and see what I can do. Thanks for sharing the link you found ;)

Humans of [Insert city here]

That's exactly what I was thinking :D

Yes, I know that street photography has been around since the first film cameras, but maybe I failed to describe what "officiousbystander" perfectly depicted. I think that it's not only the idea of "taking pictures of strangers and engaging them in a discussion" that made HoNY what it is now, but how well Brandon Stanton is able to empathize with the people he's talking to allowing them to describe more private events. And I agree that it isn't an easy task to embark into, but I admire who's willing to go out in the street engaging with strangers even for a small chitchat. Because I feel that in today's society we tend to be everyone for themselves, but using photography for projects like this might make people feel a little bit closer to one another. ;)

Humans of [Insert city here]

Hi everybody, today when I was on facebook I stumbled upon a page similar to Humans of New York, but with photographs done in my hometown. For those who doesn't know what HoNY is, it's a project where the photographer Brandon Stanton stops people around the city of New York and, while asking them a few question, captures a few pictures and then puts them on his website/page with a quote of the subject. Even though some of his photos are not always spectacular, I'm always amazed by the excerpt of discussion that he add to the photo.

I always thought about doing it myself in my hometown, but right now I'm not confident enough with my photography skills to go out and shoot stranger while asking them question that they might turn down. So when I discovered the page I was really happy that someone decided to carry on the project here in such a small city. But when I was discussing with someone else about the page, she told me that in her opinion it was like plagiarizing someone else's work because the questions that the guy asks are almost identical and the pictures have a similar feeling.

My only thought is that I probably couldn't involve myself enough in such a project, knowing that it's not coming from an idea that I've personally developed. But I also think that those who manage to do it, are doing it in a way to acclaim the author and since everybody has a different view of the life around us, they would in the end produce a different body of work.

Hoping that I managed to explain myself (and I apologize for any error you may find in the post :)), I was wondering what's your opinion about the topic. Do you think that's cheap taking HoNY's idea and simply transferring it to another city, or it could be an interesting way to see how different people in different city's live and think?

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read the post!
Have a nice evening :D

Hi all, this is my first photo that I post here. The other day there was an amazing sky and I set up my K-3 for a timelapse of nearly 300 hundred RAWs, but surprisingly at the end of the shoot when I looked at the display of my dslr every photo looked nearly identical to one another except for the first 20 or so pictures. I thought that something was wrong with my setup and as soon as I checked I noticed that by accident I put my camera on "interval composite mode", which until then I didn't even try it  Well, even though it wasn't planned, in the end I'm pretty happy with the result.
I think I'll experiment more with this mode. :D

:D I think Locarno and Lugano are the most visited cities also thanks to their beautiful lakes and surroundings. Although its small size, this region has a lot of variety, in fact I'm planning to visit it as a tourist and try to photograph the most iconic and evocative places.

Ahah small world indeed. I agree with you, when I'm traveling it's hard to spot another Pentax user, but here when someone asks me what camera I'm using and I answer "a Pentax" they look at me as I was crazy. So it's nice to know that I wasn't the only user around here  Anyway I went to Paris two years ago for a couple of days and it's such a wonderful city! Hope you're enjoying your stay :D

Well, thanks everybody for the fast responses. I tried a complete format of the card with the SDFormatter software and everything went smooth, but as I put it in my K-3 and took one photo the error showed up again. I'm led to believe that I bought a faulty memory card, because now neither my iMac nor my MacBook or my Nex-6 won't recognize it. As you suggested I tried also both slot without success. I tested my other 32GB SDHC Sandisk and no error showed up, so the camera's slots should be fine. Again, thanks for the amazing support.

I like the first one a lot. In my opinion it conveys a beautiful sense of peace and calmness, I love especially the subtle light and the clouds in the background. I also like the third one because the fog adds something mysterious to the scenery. Well done! :)

Hi everyone, recently I wanted to try some timelapse shooting and I thought I needed a more capable memory card so I bought a "Lexar 64GB SDXC Memory Card Professional Class 10 600x UHS-I". I don't know why but suddenly, from one day to another, the K-3 stopped saving the pictures on this card, before I had no problem in fact I did many timelapse of over 200-300 RAWs without any trouble on the same memory card. Now I can't even format it from within the camera and just keeps saying something like there has been an error with this memory card. I thought it could be physically ruined, but I tried it this weekend on a Nex-6 and everything was fine.

I'm no expert in this field and hope someone could help me. Thanks :D

I'm actually from the southern part of Switzerland, Ticino, where people speak italian. I agree with you, especially in the Swiss Alps there are many wonderful towns and places that are worth visiting. However when I went to the USA a couple of years ago I was amazed by the wide open places you've got and also how you take care of your natural wonder, such as Yosemite and Grand Canyon. Such majestic places!

And thanks everyone for the warm welcome! :D

Hi everybody, I'm Michele and here's a brief presentation
in 2009 I purchased a Pentax K-20D and I started learning photography through various tutorial that I could find online. A couple of years ago I found this forum and I was blown away by the amount of tips&tricks available, but I never signed up because photography hadn't still conquered me deeply. A couple of months ago I decided to buy a Pentax K and the quality gap from the old K20D amazed me :) The subject that I enjoy the most shooting are landscapes, mostly because I love hiking and discovering less traveled paths, but I would really like to start shooting street photography (from people to architecture) and I'm sure that here I'll find what I'm looking for. By the way, as you probably noticed, english is not my mother tongue and during my english course at university, I was encouraged to find a forum and interact in order to improve my written english. So I decided to mix pleasure with business, see you around
