When APSC Image quality is 2 stops better than FF...

Remember the times when CMOS sensors were considerably noisier than CCDs? Remember the times when camera sensors couldn't handle long exposures past 30 seconds? Remember when camera sensors with 3Mp cost almost as much as a new car?

Sensor technologies are bound to improve and be expanded upon. This is a first attempt by SONY at getting a global shutter into a consumer product, I wouldn't be such a harsh critic of the technology just yet.

Putting this as a second reply to keep it out of the basic camera gear and focus more on technique:

These are beautiful portraits that appear to be shot using available light with maybe a small fill flash. I think you should invest more effort on your lighting setup to control the exposure on the environment relative to your model. Why? So you can stop leaning on wide open apertures to diffuse the background.

I am by no means a flash or portrait expert and haven't shot flash in about 15 years ... but if you had a nice softbox overhead and soft fill from the side, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get aperture up to f4 ~ f8 and use flash to darken down the backdrop. This will reduce small errors with focus-recompose, and maybe add a bit more drama to the images. In the shots above you have quality light (from some bay windows I'm guessing) but the model is disappearing into the scene a bit too much for me.

The other thing that will make even your K5 look like an upgrade is to invest in a camera stand and get away from tripods or strictly hand-held shooting. Once you try one of these you don't want to go back. It's so easy to figure out where critical focus is and just mark the floor with a small piece of tape to move the rig in and out of the way. Add an external 4k monitor plugged into the video output and you don't even need to bother with tethered shooting.

Also, consider that the Hasselblads and PhaseOne's MF rigs have a single center focus point and you'll understand why the cadre of youtube sony crybabies aren't taken very seriously.

Tutorial: How to convert Pentax DA*SDM-Lenses from SDM to Screwdrive Step by Step
Posted By photogem

There are many tutorials for converting *SDM-lenses to screwdrive but as I have done it now many times I felt we could have a step by step tutorial including the latest findings and photos, so that everything can go super smooth.

When I did this conversion the first time, I had zero experience with anything like this!
I was ... like most of you ... just a beginner!

And as most tutorials were in English, I was even more so a beginner, a greenhorn as it is called sometimes.

But after I studied a few tutorials, I knew I can do it and so it was. Actually it was pretty easy. So don't be scared!
One just has to be attentive, follow each step and then thats it!

But as I have written many tutorials concerning other Pentax repairs I knew, here we need a thorough tutorial as well.

So here it is:

The following Pentax lenses can be converted and the procedure is the same:
- SMC PENTAX-DA* 16-50mmF2.8 ED AL [IF] SDM
- SMC PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF]SDM (this is the one I use here for this tutorial)
- SMC PENTAX-DA* 200mmF2.8 ED[IF] SDM
- SMC PENTAX-DA* 300mmF4 ED[IF] SDM

The SMC PENTAX DA* 60-250mm F4ED [IF] SDM cannot be converted although it has an inbuilt screwdrive mechanism. The lens-rom datas are very complex, nobody succeeded until today.
The DA* 55mmF1,4 and SMC Pentax DA*17-70mm/F4,0 cannot be converted because they have no screwdrive built it, they are SDM only.

You need:

1. Pentax DSLR:K100/110/100D-Super*, K200D, K-m, K-x, K-r, K10D*, K20D, K7, K5, K5II, K5IIs (I used the K-5 for this tutorial)
From the Pentax K-30 and K-3 onwards it is not possible anymore to convert those SDM lenses(Of course one can get into the Debug-Menu, but converting isn’t possible anymore. Same goes for the Pentax *istDS/DL-series, again: Debug Menu is possible but no conversion!)
- Charged battery (or external powersupply)
- Formatted SD-card
2. For Windows the program: Notepad++ (Free Download) installed on your PC/Labtop
(some use "PkTether" for activating theDebug-Menu. But for this you need a connection between your Pentax DSLR and your PC/Labtop which is unnecessary,
there is no gain in doing so, nothing would be easier, IMO quite the opposite, it makes things more complicated. I think once somebody recommended it and it became an internet-truth without it ever having been questioned. PKTriggerchord won’t workat all!

3. The DEBUG-Menu files for the camera you use for this task

a) How to create the debug menufor older Pentax bodies see HERE
b) For the Pentax K5-Series you can download the ready created debug menu here:
K-5; K-5II and K-5IIs
c)K100/110D allow direct access into the Debug-Menu *(explained at the end of this tutorial)
4. The lens you wish to convert, attached to your Pentax DSLR
* For the Pentax K10D there is some confusion about which firmware you use:
The K10D with FW v1.10 does not allow to drive SDM-lenses, but it can be used for conversion!
Here you find the tutorial how to enter the DEBUG MENU of the K10D:
Tutorial: Enter DEBUG-MENU of Pentax K10D (For converting SDM-lenses to Screwdrive) - PentaxForums.com

The steps:

1.
Prepare your SD-card:

Paste both Debug Menu files "next to the DCIM-folder"
With the K-5 it looks like this:

2.
-Insert the SD card into your Pentax but leave the SD-carddoor open!
-Switch your Pentax on: Now you are in the Debug-Menu on page 1, which is called
DevelopmentMenu1:

3.
- With the 4-Way-Controller of your Pentax arrow-button scroll down to the 2.nd line:
*DEBUG MODE ....and then right:
Here you change from (= DIS abled)
(as you can see on the previous photo line 2)
to (=EN abled):

4.
- With the 4-Way-Controller to page 4:
= Development Menu4
and there 2.nd line:
= *Lens Rom Dat Camera =>SD

5.
- Click on OK:
- The message "Wait" usually comes (but with some Pentax DLSR’s it doesn’t so don’t worry)
- When this task is done, all lens-rom data have been copied from the lens onto your SD-card!
- Remove the SD-card and connect it to your PC or Labtop, open it
Now you can see next to the two debug-files a new one called:
LENSEEP.LNS:

6.
For security make a copy of thisfile LENSEEP.LNS and secure it where ever you want/chose.
The Pentax K-5 (and others) create automatically a backup, but you want to be save
and have it secured on a place on your harddisk as well.

7.
- Now you open LENSEEP.LNS (on your SD-Card!!!) with Notepad++.
It will look like this:

In column 03 you have to change ALL "C0" entries into "80“.
!!!Those columns begin left with 00: One might mistake it for column 4, but it is 03!!!

I marked some of the "C0" enries with a green arrow and above some which have already been changed by myself into "80" with a red arrow.

Remember: You just change all the "C0"- codes in column 03 into „80“:

In column 5 you find usually 2 further "C0" entries: NO NOT CHANGE THOSE!

With my DA*50-135 there were 32 codes in column 3 in the following lines:

6,10,14,18 -- 25,29,33,37 -- 44,48,52,56 -- 63,67,71,75 -- 81,86,90,94 -- 101,105,109,113 -- 120,124,128,132 -- 139,143,147,151

8.
As soon as you have done this, click on "Save" (the top left tab of Notepad++)
For security open the file LENSEEP.LNS again with Notepad++ to make sure that there are no more „CO“ codes in column 03 but only the new „80“ codes!
Close Notepad++, remove your SD-card.

9.
Insert your SD-card into your Pentax (with your lens attached!) and leave the SD-carddoor open.
Switch your Pentax ON.

10.
Again you are in
- Development Menu1:
- Again DIS to EN = enable as before
- Again to page 4 = Development Menu4
- And there on first line:
=*Lens Rom Dat SD=>Camera

11:
- Click on OK.
- Now you can see the transfer of the data on the LCD Display.

- That was it! Well done!

My Pentax K-5 switched of the Development/Debug-Menu automatically on DIS (=disabled)
But this seems to be different with different Pentax DSLRs, so if it doesn’t do this, every time you switch your camera on you would arrive in the Debug-Menu.
So then you go to step 3 but this time with the cursor from to and then [OK]!

If you now connect your SD-card with your PC or Labtop, you can see, that your Pentax automatically made a backup of the old lensrom = BACKUP.LNS .
This is identical with the one you secured before hand.

*With aPentax K100D and K110D you enter a different way into the Debug-Menu:
(with *istDS/DL as well but with closed SD-card-door but you cannot do the programming of the SDM lenses with those)

- Your chosen SDM*-lens is attached
- Fully charged batteries (or external powersupply)
- Formatted SD-card inserted, SD-carddoor remains open!
1. Press INFO + AE-L at the same time while you switch your Pentax ON.
2. Press the buttons „Menu“, and again „Menu“ and then „INFO“ within 5 seconds
3. Now you are in the Debug-Menu of your Pentax
4. Press button „Menu“ 1 x
5. Close SD-carddoor
6. Choose "LENS EEPROM R/W", then press „OK“ button.
7. Chose "LENS EEPROM STORE" and press „OK“ button.
8. The message "Wait" shows up on your display, then there will be an automatic return into the Debug-Menu!
9. The Lens-ROM Datas (file LENSEEP.LNS) of the lens have now been copied in your SD-Card

Now you follow step 7 as described before
Insert the SD-Karte with the modified file LENSEEP.LNS into your Pentax.
10. Follow steps 1-5 as you have done already
11. Chose "LENS EEPROM LOAD": All data will now be transfered backinto your lens

Done!

Very important:
Even with 10 of the same lenses there can be minor differences between the lens-roms!
Thats why it isn’t a good idea to use ready LENSEEP.LNS from others!
They might even be transfered and you even get a Backup.LNS but it can lead to other problems because not specific for YOUR lens!
Therefore: Only change the LENSEEP.LNS of your lens!

Good luck!

I do occasionally pan some shots however boats will move up and down along with left to right or right to left. The rougher the water gets the more up and down motion that really screws with panning. Also, I'm currently battling 2 bad shoulders that don't allow a very fluid panning technique. Here are a few from the past.

Pentax D-LI109 Lithium Ion replacement battery
Posted By photogem

It is very simple:

Every third party battery without exception only qualifies for the European CE standard which is not even government controlled but just a self-test done by the manufacturer.

The Original Pentax D-LI109 does qualify for the US UL standard and more so for the even more strict PSE standard.

There is no Third-Party battery which could qualify for the UL standard, forget PSE, no chance.

Same for the chargers!

The D-LI109 Pentax has a T-contact which measures temperature during the gentle "soft-charging" of the D-BC109 charger.
It also has the D-contact which is for measuring even charging of each cell and switching off charge of one cell when it is full so it cannot be overcharged (and get hot).

Every third party battery without exception lacks the temperature-sensor (thermistor). None of them could even be charged on the Pentax D-BC109 if they wouldn't kind of trick the charger by having a resistor instead of the sensor which has a similar impedance. So the charger thinks an original battery is going to be charged.

Premium third party cells are no different to that, just that they use better cells inside, such as Panasonic.

I had 3 third party D-LI109 in my hands which had started to swell and thus stuck inside the battery compartment.
It happens quite often!
Then at the very latest you should get rid of it, it can become a little devil in your Pentax you don't want to meet.

Recommendations for a telephoto lens for wildlife photography for K1 II

Hi,

I am new to this forum which was recommended to me today by Ricoh Imaging support personnel. I have been a lover of Pentax cameras since the late 70's when I bought my first Pentax camera which was a K2. I upgraded to the LX when it came out and it was my main camera until I finally decided to get into digital. My first digital camera was a 10D. Then I upgraded to a K5 and then I bought a K5II. Last year I bought a K1II. I bought a HD Pentax-D FA 24-70 mm F2.8 ED SDM WR for my first lens with the full frame camera. My main interest is landscape photography but recently I decided to start taking photos of birds in the marshes of Louisiana. Today i learned about the forum and the lens compatibility chart. My longest telephoto lens is a 300 mm, however I still have my SMC 400 telephoto which i used with a tripod back in the day. I would like some suggestions on a top-quality telephoto lens to use with the K1 II. Thanks!

Hi all,

I have a YouTube channel dedicated to Pentax enthusiasts: PentaxTips - YouTube

I have produced in-depth tutorials on the K-70, K-1 II, and the K-3 III.
YouTube analytics provide interesting insight into what the consumer is interested in.
From this perspective, I'd like to provide a tidbit of information.

One of my most popular videos, is my History of Pentax video:

You Tube

Besides the history video, the tutorial videos are the next most popular.
In particular, my K-70 tutorial:

Youtu.be

, which is arguably my most popular video (see screenshot attached).
There may be some bias here, as K-3 owners may be less interested in tutorials (more expensive camera may imply a non-beginner).

However, what this data may suggest, is that although there is initial interest in the newest, flashy tech, but it is the affordable cameras that are likely being purchased that consumers want to use and learn how to use. Much, much more interest in the affordable and basic than the few who purchase the high-end flashy tech.

The K-70, to me as a YouTuber, appears consistently successfully, and people are interested in using and learning the K-70.

I bet Ricoh was not prepared for the supply chain issue - likely working on the K-1 III.
But since there are supply chain issues on the K-70, it makes sense to reissue a new version to supply this clear demand and interest for the entry-level market.

I am excited there is a Pentax KF to encourage our fellow photographers who want the superior OVF experience, with impressive feature set, at an entry-level price offering.

But what do I know? What's your opinion?

I am sure the screws must come off, I would if necessary used my precision drill-stand.

Remember, Pentax screws are JIS, so a true JIS screwdriver such as made by Vessel or Hozan is a good idea.
If they are glued, then with threadlocking laquer. Could well be. Then with some force and a JIS.

JIS 0 or 00

and don't believe people who claim that PH in USA now is JIS, it isn't!

Contact-Spray is a very risky solution. It can help but it can do damage beyond repair.

I never had a GR in my hands so I don't know how to disassemble it but I had many Pentax DSRL with contact problems of the buttons.
Those which are not WR more so but often the On/Off Release-button of the K5-series.

In 95% of all cases it is dirt .... often sweat ... and at times particular sweat can lead to corrosion of contacts.

I have found terrible dirt problems on the buttons on the back side, which is similar to when you open a remote control and clean it.
(again here in most cases sweat).

See:

You Tube

https://jamiecollinson.com/blog/disassembling-ricoh-gr-for-sensor-cleaning/

So I would disassemble and clean with pure alcool.

Nothing else.

Your problem might be as simple as one bad button that is partly stuck and activating randomly. I think the "Disp" button would cause most of the problems you mentioned, but other buttons could cause it and there's still the chance of multiple controls having problems at the same time.

Electrical contact spray cleaner might help you. Carefully spray it into the camera around the buttons. Don't use too much.

Some buttons on my GR (model i, not ii) became overly sensitive after my camera got wet. I waited several days for it to dry but merely moving the camera could trigger random button presses. My problem improved over time, I guess continued use of buttons scraped off whatever residue was left behind by the water.

How Pentax Ruined Digital Photography...

I've never rented a camera or lens in my life.

Every camera or lens I have tried I have done so with the intention of keeping and using if it met my needs, requirements and expectations. Sadly most have failed. When the system I'm experimenting with fails to meet my needs, I end up going back to a few stalwarts (for me) namely Fuji and Pentax.

I share my experiences on my Youtube channel honestly and sincerely.

Interestingly, other much bigger channels are just given or loaned gear by various manufacturers, use that gear for a week or two, never intending to actually use the gear and make a few positive videos and nobody seems to think there's any problem with that... yet for some reason what I do is criticized frequently.

There's very few people on YT I won't watch. He's the one... :)

I base all of my camera system decisions on the prints I make and what they look like. And my print judgements are based on working for over 30+ years in a professional darkroom so I kinda know what I'm looking for. I think most of my regular YT viewers know it's really to the point of an obsession for me.

So when someone reviews a camera, I always wonder what are the most important things this person is basing their conclusions on. For Toneh it seems it's how much money he can make if he makes a video about it and says something stupid to create a buzz. (Fro is almost as bad.)

Another example is DPreview TV. Overall they do a really good job for "drive by reviews." They compare different cameras using the same criteria, but they don't use the cameras for an extended period of time trying to actually do anything serious with them. So you get a very broad overview of A vs B vs C, which is somewhat useful, but as with most things in life the devil is in the details and you have to use the cameras for a while to find out what they're really like to live with. (Makes you wonder how any marriages survive as well... ;) )

For Pentax specific reviews this forum is one of the best sources for fair and in depth information on Pentax cameras and lenses. As we all know it's a system you have "to get it" to be happy with, and most don't have a clue what it's about.

Is there serious interest for PKTriggercord for the Mac? I might be able to do it
Posted By tempelorg

Hi, I'm a Mac software developer, and much better at that than at taking interesting pictures :-D

I had previously looked into making PKTriggercord work on Macs but was lacking the understanding of using the low level comms protocols (SCSI, USB) on a Mac.

Recently, I did contract work that filled that knowledge gap.

Now I could try again to make a Mac version of what PKTriggercord does, but since I have no need for this myself any more, and since programming is my profession, I'd need some external incentive for this. Also, I only have a K-5, K-3 and K-1, and it seems that the K-3 and K-1 doesn't support this method any more, wheras the K-3 II does (which I don't have).

So I could test this with my K-5 but then would need others to support tests on other cameras. And ideally those would be having some technical skills and be telling me more details than just "it doesn't work".

If you're interested and if you'd also be interested if the outcome would not be a free product, please comment here, so that I can get an idea of the interest.

Otherwise, I assume that ppl rather use a Raspi or a Windows VM (which I did back then) on their Mac.

Pentax Meeting on Nov 27: Q&A about future products (nothing very specific)
Posted By JPT
Replies: 455
I’ll explain the Q&A part of the Pentax Meeting event in this post. When registering to attend the session, there was a space to add a question to the product planning team. Obviously with 2000+ attendees, it wasn’t possible to answer every question one by one, but they grouped them together to come up with the top three themes. They were pretty much what you’d expect, so counting up from the 3rd to the 1st most common question, here is how they responded to them.

Q. Is there going to be a successor to the KP or K-70
A. Right now they’d really like us to buy the K-3 III - they were smiling as they said this. However, they realize it’s important to have a more accessible model, because there needs to be an attainable way for beginners to experience a DSLR. Beyond that they didn’t say anything specific, but we can assume there will be a low or mid-range APS-C camera at some point.

Q. What lenses are coming?
A. They started by apologizing that it had taken so long to deliver on the roadmap. They are working on the remaining lenses, but that is not all. They are also working on several lenses that are not on the roadmap, and some of these might come out before the roadmapped items. Reading between the lines, I get the feeling they don’t want to put new things on the roadmap unless they are really sure they can deliver. They asked users for ideas for what lens they’d like, and the 135mm and super telephoto seemed to be the most requested in the Zoom chat.

Q. What about the next full frame camera?
A. For a start, the K-1 II is their full frame model for time being. It is getting a firmware update in December to add a new custom image mode. It doesn’t look like it will be replaced in the immediate future. They talked about how difficult and how long it would take to come out with a model with a new prism like the K-3 III. It sounds like the expectation of a full frame version K-3 III with the prism of K-1 II is the most realistic.

They also have other ideas for cameras like a model with the same body design as the K-1 but a lower resolution to enable faster operation. They also mentioned the idea of a full frame manual model, which could be a lot smaller than the K-1 by removing some of the automation. It was interesting to hear that the designers do really think about some of the more out-of-the-box ideas, like people discuss on the forums.

Other parts of the event today
- A showcase of the DFA21mm Limited. They did this by having five of the developers go out and take pictures with the lens that they think are both good images and that illustrate something the think is characteristic of the lens. This brought up various stories about the development of the lens. Then they asked the audience to vote for the the best set. It was quite a good way to talk about the lens and show that the designers are keen photographers themselves.
- Showing the winners of a photo contest
- A video made with user submitted photos of their cameras. It was done like a 102 version of the Pentax 100 video they did two years ago.
- A giveaway of cool display of the individual lens elements of the DFA21 Limited, like a real version of a lens element diagram in a glass case. The contest itself was a bit of a shambles though.
- The new President Noboru Akahane closed with a speech at the end. It was just a nice closing speech. He didn’t really say much about strategy or anything like that.

Obviously, this was an engagement event, not a product announcement. The main feeling was of a company trying to be close to its customers and trying to listen. I honestly thought they would show a mock-up of a lens or two, but it was a not an event like a press conference. We probably have to wait for something more public like CP+ for that

But this camera looked very, very intriguing to me. My K5-iis just bit the dust, so I was down to one working body, my KP.

Then the free battery grip sale popped up, I had just gotten paid for a couple wedding jobs, and bam... I found myself ordering.

(let me just say, I've always been peeved at the battery grip price, with the exception of the K200D which was reasonable.)

Super quick first impressions after 6 senior portrait sessions shot with it in two days. (nothing like giving it a workout a day after receiving it:

#1: The autofocus. So much better. My 55mm is really hit or miss on my KP. It has a much, MUCH better keeper rate on the K3-III.
#2: The "lock all buttons" button. I've needed this for so long. Every time I let the camera hang (on my strap) or grab it to shoot again, I roll the wheels with my fingers, or hit the joystick.
#3: Image quality is freakin' oustanding. Of course it's Pentax, so that's to be expected. But it's soooo good.
#4: USB charging: Some folks don't like this. I love it. I hated taking off the battery grip on all my previous cameras just to charge the main battery. This is great, and it charges both batteries.

Anyway, I'll go back to lurking for another month and then post some photos. lol.

A bump from me, that lens is my most used one, I don't leave home without it.
