K1 MKI Firmware update 1.40 to 2.2, any issues with Pentax PhotoSync app?

The Photo Sync app is a third party developed app that allows remote control of the camera via wifi.
You can look it up on the App Store or Google Play Store. It works better than the Image sync app although it is as slow if you want to do any image transfer from camera to mobile device, but that's the camera's wifi speed's fault, and it's not what I use it for anyway.
Being a third party app I'm a bit concerned it may not work properly (or at all) once the FW is updated, since it can not be rolled back.
The fact that the Image sync app works is a good sign, but I'd wait to see if any Photo Sync app user chimes in.

Thanks anyway.

Just thinking it might be time to do some updating...I never touched the FW of my K1 MKI.
Any issues I should be aware of with such a jump?
I'm particularly concerned about issues with the WIFI connectivity as I use the Pentax PhotoSync 3rd party app to remotely control the camera during timelapses: to me it's crucial, so I want to make sure there are no issues before I update.
Any users that may chime in?

Thanks

K-1 Video

I find it mediocre at best. Even using the sharpest primes I have, which give me excellent results with stills, the video output is soft and lacks clarity. It is usable but compared to the video output of current, same level competitors is really well behind the pack.
On top of 1080 and low FPS only (no 4K) and poor image quality it lacks some key features like AF tracking and no continuous focus in video mode, which, is really a bummer.
I think this is an area where Pentax desperately needs to improve: I know the K1 is designed for stills, but in 2020 you cannot underestimate the importance of video for a well rounded product, besides, phones do quality 4k video...
I hope with the MKIII (BTW, any rumors about that?) this will be taken into serious account together with several other stills features.

How are you dealing with lenses? Are you buying a whole new set for the Sony or using some kind of adapter for the Pentax glass you already have?

GoPro for serious video production isn't a viable option my friend...4K capability doesn't mean the footage is going to be good. Those are good for surfers, bikers or hikers who want to have footage while having fun.
If you ever compared the quality of footage from a GoPro to that of an A7 or a 1Dx MKII you'll see what I mean, even though GoPro has come a long way, but it's still just an action camera.
I love my K1 but its outdated features and niche status are becoming more and more a constraint for what I do...

No way...I'm sorry, Pentax needs to sort this out in the next K1 iteration with serious video capabilities. I acknowledge it's a stills camera but nowdays, even the cheapest consumer camera can do 4K video...
I'm looking into a Sony A7III for my video needs, and as a backup camera for stills, but I'm more and more inclined to change system; not sure if there are any rumors about this, but if Pentax isn't getting it straight with the next update I think I'll be done...

Alternative choice for Ricoh Image Sync App - Pentax Photo Sync

Hi,

you can, at least partially: I do use it to control exposure during timelapses as the K-1 is fired from an external intervalometer and controller, so its settings are not locked as when you shoot a timelapse with the internal one.

This is particularly handy for Holy Grail shoots (day to night and vice versa) where you need to adjust exposure without touching the camera.

It works but I wish it would be more responsive and give you access to more parameters, but I guess some, like the mirroring of the live view, are only usable in certain conditions. Triggering the camera works but it's a bit finnicky.

Cheers

Bulb Ramping a K30

Hello,

Is there a way to manually bulb ramp a K30 for holy grail stile timelapse? I mean, changing exposure parameters in realtime remotely?
I'm using an external intervalometer and controller but I don't want to touch the camera while I'm shooting the sequence.
Any idea?

Thanx

Anybody tried using the app on an iPad as an external monitor?
I acknowledge that if I turn on live view on the K1 and fire up the app it should work as a mirror of the internal display.

K Mount D-FA Lenses on Sony A7III anybody?

Looks like the one I want. If that has an aperture control ring that's mechanically controlling blades on the lens it should work, albeit not in stops, but there's zebra on the Sony to check exposure and focus peaking, so it should work.
I may give it a try and send it back if that doesn't work with my DFA 24-70 and Sigma lenses.

Thanx

If you have ever tried shooting video with the K1 and with a Sony and put them side by side you'd have acknowledged that the K1 footage is just really not up to contemporary quality standards.
The video is soft, limited to full HD at lower FPS, and also the camera lacks some key features, like the focus peaking during shooting, which to me is insane...
I love it for stills, as its features are particularly suited to what I usually shoot, and I'll keep it for sure, but for video you just what something else.
I shoot music videos, so very often in low light conditions, and the Sony has the best performance in low light (video wise).
I tried to do the same with the K1 but to get an usable exposure I had to ramp up the ISO and that gave me some pretty grainy footage.
Comparing it to the razor sharp and noiseless footage of the A7 (even at 6400) just made up my mind in a second.

I don't have cine lenses, but that's not a big issue for what I do. If the video thing grows, I'll invest in some dedicated glass for the Sony, for the moment the regular photo lenses will do.
As I said, I'll keep both cameras, so the lenses I have will have to make do for the moment. In time I'll understand if the investment for some dedicated Sony lenses will be justified.
Right now is justifying the purchase of a third camera body...

K Mount D-FA Lenses on Sony A7III anybody?

Hi all,

did some research but I haven't been able to clearly find out.

I'm looking into a Sony A7III as my job requirements are broadening to video, and as much as I love my K1, it just doesn't cut it for professional video shoot.

The thing is, I have a decent set of Pentax and Sigma lenses which I'd really want to use on the Sony body (both for quality, portability and money reasons).

All my lenses have no aperture control, and I understand that all of the adapters I've seen so far are just mechanically matching K mount lenses to the E mount body, but they don't transmit any of the electronics.
So, manual focus is not that issue, but aperture sure is.

Any ideas on whether there is one capable of controlling aperture too?

Thanx

Pentax K-1 Video Quality - Dynamic Range/Matching with other cameras/Best Practices

For this project that's coming up I'll go with the recording in camera: not enough budget to justify additional gear, and since the final outcome will be YT I can accept some compression, even though I think I'll shoot 4K.
For this gig I think I'll use Sony lenses, as I don't have time to experiment with K lenses and adapters.
I've never operated a Sony A7 so, care to share any particular settings and tips I should consider?

Thanx

I have kind of given up on trying to shoot video with the K1.
I have some videoclip work coming up, and I'm renting an A7III for cheap. I was also considering getting one but it's still premature.
If the things starts to grow I may bite the bullet and get one, and use an adapter to use my DA and Sigma lenses on it (there's some adapters that allow manual aperture control of DA lenses, and focus manually when shooting video.
I have tried all the lenses I own on the K1 to shoot video and the issue is not the lens but the use of the sensor and Mbit rate as correctly pointed out above.
Video is way too soft to be considered usable nowdays that we are regularly shooting 4K or 1080 when card space is limited.
I think the video department is not of much interest for Pentax...get along with it...

Ok so I got one. It works off camera in manual mode with a set of cheap triggers. I haven’t figured out if there’s a way to have it working off camera in P-TTL mode. Is getting a genuine Pentax flash to be used as master the only way?

I understand, still the Japanese night clips are shot at night...that's what I'm wondering. I'd really like to know how the camera was set on that occasion.

Hi,

I think it's an excellent work. This proves that some decent quality video can be shot with Pentax gear too.

Care to share some details about how you set cameras?

Thanx

L.

P.S. unless there is something with the YT compression and playback I think there is some out of sync between video and audio (just look at when the drummer hits the china cymbal on his right)

Hi all,

I tried to shoot some clips with the K1 and 24/70 on a dimly lit recording studio (but not very dark) I was working in. Well...the results have been pretty disappointing: setting the shutter time double the frame rate to 1/60 forced me to raise the ISO to 1600, which produced a rather noisy and grainy image quality. And yes...it looks pretty soft compared to other clips I had to edit that were shot on a GH5...

The video posted above of the Japanese night town looks amazing compared to mine...so I guess some pretty good results can be achieved with the K1 too...provided one knows how to properly set it and operate it...

Can I blame the low light situation or did I miss something (that was actually the first time I had to shoot video with the K1)?

Thanx

Hi all, looking to get this same flash model for portrait and still life shots, so mostly used off camera. Also, I’m looking to experiment with it on automotive shoots (hopefully it will be powerful enough, combined with a Godox octabox). Not sure I understood if it is going to work with the built in Pentax wireless triggering system (I shoot with a K1) or if I have to get a dedicated trigger/receiver for it (in such case, which one?). Any infos much appreciated.

Thanx, this is very interesting. I didn’t know the triggering system was built in the camera body. The model you are suggesting is one of those I’m considering, as I’d like to keep it within the Pentax brand. Now, for automotive type shoots it’s basically used in manual as the power is more or less kept constant, but I’d want to make sure it’s P-TTL and hopefully HSS too for the rest of the shoot types I’ll use it in.
The rest of the gear (soft boxes, stands) is taken care of easily by Amazon. As for the technique I pretty much got it down (it’s basically one master shot and the many shots with dedicated lighting and masking that get later on assembled in PSJ; it may look easy but I bet it’s not and I won’t be able to tell until I have ha flash to try it out...
