Bonjour Bhairavp,
I have the FA 28 mm f2.8, and really like it. I found the opposite of you though. I thought it was really nice indoors, not too wide, not too long... The only thing I didn't like about it was that you can't adjust the focus while in auto-focus like on the DA lenses.
And build quality might not be what people call robust, but I think it's built quite nicely and robustly just with "cheaper" materials than the DA ltd.
Take care,
HPH

Hey freewheelin25,
You won't be disappointed, I can guarantee that, at least for the DA 21 (never tried the DA 70). From the moment I got it, it was glued to my camera, even surpassed my DA 35 macro, when I was just running out of the house.
Take care,

Ricky, best comment I've read so far! :)
But this site has also curbed down (some of) my LBA, as I've the choices I've made are more thought out, rather than just based on common reviews.

Hi Brosen,
I don't/didn't have the 18-135mm but have the 18-55 mm WR and the 55-300 mm and just got both those DA* today. I can tell you that both are quite close to my fixed focal length (DA 21, DA35 macro and DFA 100). I'm actually really happy with these and probably should have got them sooner! This might not be what you want to hear though... :D
Also, not sure what you meant by more DR (more a camera/sensor thing as mentioned by bdéry) but I think I understand what you mean. The f2.8 makes a HUGE difference, at least to me, compared to the f3.5-5.6 range of opening.
Let us know what path you took.

Pros | High ISO, improved AF Cons | Live view workability Rating | 9 Price (U.S. Dollars) | 1600 CAN$ Years Owned | 3 weeks |
I can recommend this camera: Yes Value, Features, Performance & Size
Value for $$: 4/5 (but it's new, so that number should go up with time!)
Features: 5/5. I doubt I'll ever use all the features this camera's has to offer.
Performance & Size: Coming from a K20d I'm most impressed with the extra features and the smalle size. Camera Review
Hi All,
After seeing some posts and Urkeldaedalus' review, I was convinced to get this camera mostly because of the High ISO IQ.
I've listed only 2 "pros" as those were the most important to me coming from the K20d.
For the High ISO this camera is worth every penny. I often take shots in poorly light places (i.e. inside) and sometimes would like to forgo the flash. With the K20d, ISO1600 shots were possible, but I was never satisfied with them as the noise would have "colors", i.e. red and green tints. Quite annoying and I never got around to being happy with my PP. Not to say some were capable of producing very nice ISO 1600 pics, but I wasn't.
With the K-5, the pics taken at ISO 1600 don't need any PP (for my tastes and see Urkeldaedalus' shots posted above) and the ISO 3200 shots barely any noise reduction. I would say that the noise is similar to the noise I've seen on my friend's N*kon D700, so smooth. I'm not going to compare the cameras as I've not used the D700, only seen shots taken at those and higher ISOs...
I'm not sure if the AF speed has improved all that much except in poor lighting. WOW, I was impressed. With the K20d it happened every now and then that the AF struggled in low light, but it would catch at some point. Now, no more waiting, AF almost never hunts which is very nice.
Finally for the cons section, I only put the live view as I struggled with it a bit. But of course it might be a code 18 (where the problem is 18'' away from the camera), but I didn't find it as easy to use as I thought it would be. At one point the AF was stuck on the side of the screen and couldn't move it to the center... Also, in low light it struggled to focus! Which surprised me cause as soon as I went back to normal AF, no issues, no hunting, just straight on lock?!?
But I barely use the live view but just a heads up to someone that likes that. My recommendation would be to thoroughly look at the manual, which I should have done... ;)
Well anyways, not a very technical review, but for others like me, amateur photographers looking for a solid, small and very responsive camera, this is it! No more hesitation going for ISO 1600 and 3200 which I would always avoid with my K20d.
Kind regards,
HPH

You have quite a few really nice lenses, I understand why you're asking for opinions!!!!
I've got both the 35mm and 100mm macros and it's hard to choose. When I went to Europe I went with my DA 17-70mm, DA 55-300mm (that I didn't use much) and my 35mm macro.
I chose the 35mm because I can use it as a walkaround as well when I don't want to lugg around the 17-70mm. In the small streets it's more discreet I find!:p But then again this is my opinion.
With what I see you've got, I'd go with 4 lenses, 21mm, 50mm, 100mm and the 300mm. With those you'd be covered for macro, short and long telephoto and wide angle and your bag would not be too heavy, you can blame the weight on the 300mm :p
Let us know what you decide!
Take care,
MPOC

Hey Quicksand,
I got to agree with Mike, the picture looks pretty cool with that flare!!! :)
Voe, that picture is very nice. Where was it taken if you don't mind my asking?
I got to say, with the 2 pics posted here with flare, maybe we should have special flare lenses!!! :D

Hi Lats,
I've got the FA 28mm f2.8 which I got used and I use quite often as walkaround as it's good for both landscapes (equivalent FOV is 42 mm, so not very wide but wide enough in most cases) and for people as Marc mentioned above.
Maybe you can find one of those, I really like it. Of course if you get the 21mm you get more FOV and get the quick shift focus of the DA lenses which can come in handy for adjusting focus on the fly.
Well good luck in choosing, that's not an easy one! :D

Hejsan Pål,
I'm all for a DA*30mm to go along with the DA*55mm. I don't really care for a f1.0, and I'd be more than happy with f1.4.
That would be a great combo of lenses! 2 weather sealed primes with f1.4...
Pentax will have LBA run rampant for years to come! :D

Thanks for your comments. I guess I'll have to bug Apple! 1 e-mail per week until it's done? :p

OSX is fully updated, Aperture is the latest version and I've re-installed the latest RAW converter...
There are still the following mistakes in the lens model field:
- Confuses the DA 21mm with the DA 16-45mm and
- Nothing written for the DA 55-300mm...
Any others having these problems with Aperture?
Thanks,
MPOC

Hi Debbie,
I've done the update to version 2.1.3 of Aperture and am on the latest version of OSX (10.5.6) so I'm not sure what else to do as the updater says I've got nothing to update!
I'll check if I can update anything else manually from the apple.com website
Thanks,
MPOC

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply. I actually update Aperture to the newer version yesterday before importing my latest shots. Can I update any other way than with the updater? What I mean is can we update the RAW converter only?
Thanks,
MPOC

Hi All,
I've got a K20D with the latest firmware. (1.03)
I use Aperture for PP and noticed that when importing from the camera to Aperture I don't have the "lens model" field for the DA 55-300mm and the DA 21mm f3.2 comes out as the DA 16-45mm f4???
I checked the RAWs with the Pentax Photo Browser software and there's no confusion there. So it's not my camera that faulty, right?
Do you have the same issue?
Thanks for your feedback,
MPOC
P.S: I wrote Apple to tell them before the latest version (v2.1.3) came out so I was hopeful it was remedied...

My dream setup:
Out for the day or days when I have my backpack
DA* 16-50mm (working copy!) :D But I could stay with my DA 17-70mm
DA* 50-135mm
DA* 300mm
For quick walkaround and/or special occasions were silence is golden:
DA* 30mm (if it ever comes out)
DA* 55mm
The only thing missing would be my trusty DA 35mm ltd especially because of it's macro capability.

Yep around LLLozeau, it's very hard to find parking and the signs are just the worst. Last time I went there with the car, the same happened to me!!! That's why I take the metro now! :D
Very good price you got, I paid 449$ at Simon's in the old port.
No comments indeed on the pics you took and in your hands I'm sure good pics are to come! :o

Hey Tanner,
"When you say quickshift focus, are you refering to the ability to use auto focus, and manually adjust the focus to exactly where you want? If so, that would be useful feature indeed."
Yep, that's exactly right. I was hoping someone might have an answer for the other 2 lenses, but when I went for the D-FA, that was the main item I looked for.
Good luck,

Hey Yeatzee,
Try them out. I've got the D-FA 100mm f2.8 and although most people think that built quality is crap, I've never had an issue with it...
The IQ is fantastic. I don't know about the other 2 lenses, but with the D-FA you have the quickshift focus which is very very handy for macro stuff.
Maybe someone can clarify for the other 2 lenses.
Good luck, as Bwield said, you can't go wrong! :o

Salut Manu,
Et oui, Montréal est pas mal sympas, mais pas bcp de gens avec des Pentax!
So see below links to pictures I've taken at different focal lengths. You can get the "original uploaded picture" by clicking the link below each pic. Warning, the files are very large, but I think that's what you wanted! :o
The titles speak for themselves I hope. 2 pics (with flash and without) per focal length, wide open. All taken on a tripod with a 2sec delay. EXIF should be intact.
Sorry, no 200mm, I finished the series and noticed once imported that 200mm was actually 230mm... Pics
Aussi, on peut s'arranger pour que je te passe la lentille pour une fin de semaine ou qque chose du genre si tu veux faire des tests toi-même.

Salut Manu,
D'accord avec toi.
I'll try to take a shot with @300mm wide open (f5.8) but you're right it's not the sharpest lens out there, but it's much better than the 50-200mm.
You can always get the DA*300mm, that one seems very sharp!
