The Sigma 18-300 HSM contemporary is very good. Not sure about the 18-200 as I have never owned it. I think its advantage is that it is smaller and lighter.

No, I don't normally use the intervalometer. I just used it to simulate a large number of shots. I think the LCD display is the biggest power consumption in the camera. If you are shooting 2000 in one night, you are probably not reviewing each of them at length.

I recharged those 6 Ikea Ladda, that are actually rated at 2450 mAh, not 2500 as in my photo. 5 of them took about 1700 mAh. The 6th took almost 2000 mAh.

Also, just tested some Panasonic Eneloop, non-pro model, rated for 1900 mAh. They only lasted 1 hour and 13 minutes in my test. Much less than the Ladda. Still 10 minutes better than the Pentax D-Li90.

My widest lens on Pentax excluding the Sigma 10-20 APS-C is the D FA 28-105 FF. 28 can be too long indoors, and sometimes also outdoors when very close to architectural milestones or on tiny streets.

20-105 would be a lot better than 28-105, but I don't know of such a lens for full-frame Pentax. Do you ?

On my Lumix GX85 the widest lens is the 12-32 which is 24-64 equivalent FOV.

Did you buy your D FA 28-105 new or used ?

Have you tried that lens on any other Pentaz body ? It's possible the lens is at fault.

Just as it's possible the body is.

I bought a K1-II with D FA 28-105mm 3 years ago. Within a month, it made a fall on rocks with the lens and grip on it. Still worked. I had to send it to Precision for a credit card insurance claim - cost of making it like new, which meant a new housing at the very least.
Precision voided the warranty due to the fall, as expected .
But they took 2 months to give the estimate and return the camera. It was really hard to get it back.
They didn't provide any estimate for the grip scuffs. They said grips are not repairable. In the end I got $400 back from Amex which was the housing estimate. They denied the claim on the grip because it was a promotional so-called free item as part of a package with the camera and lens. Of course that's BS as I would not have paid the same price without the grip. I gave up fighting with Amex insurance over the $200 on the grip.

The good news though is that my combo of camera, lens and grip still works fine despite the cosmetic issues.

I agree with you that Precision is terrible to work with. I would not recommend Amex either, for the matter.

I think there should be better consumer laws in the US to allow warranty claims to be processed by other shops. Having a single national service center that's so terrible is not a good look.

I know that doesn't help your problem, unfortunately. I think you should try the lens on another body first. Look for another local Pentax owner here on the forums. Or on Facebook or craigslist. And just try it.

[unhelpful rant]
IMO, you are being setup to fail, as you have no experience with video. Did your wife volunteer you in your absence ? In your shoes, I would tell the school there was a misunderstanding, and tell them you can't record video for the event.
I guess no professional videographer wanted to be paid only by selling DVDs, which I can totally understand. Let the school deal with their decision.
[/unhelpful rant]

[slightly less unhelpful rant]
DSLRs are just not the best tools for recording a 2 hour event. In fact, Pentax DSLRs are some of the worst for this job. Pentax just has not made video a serious priority on these bodies. You will likely be better served with a modern smartphone, if you have one. The next tool of choice would be a Panasonic Lumix camera, as most of them have no time limit on video recordings.
[/slightly less unhelpful rant]

Now, if you still decide to go through with it after these rants, some tips, in totally random order :

1) Absolutely record the audio separately. The audio on the Pentax DSLRs is poor, at best. On some of them it's positively horrid.
Preferably, record audio very close to the stage or on the stage itself, with a pair of cardioid microphones, on a tripod, with your Zoom recorder. Make sure you test your SD card (run h2testw) and batteries before hand. Check that you can actually record audio for 2 hours continuously with the SD card and battery you plan to use.
2) If you must use a Pentax DSLR for video, make sure to set each camera on a tripod, and turn SR off.
3) Check how long each of your D-Li90 batteries actually last for video recording. Some old ones and 3rd parties may not even last 25 minutes. There is large variability in each battery. I just ran some battery tests yesterday on my K-1 II, see the following thread :
Battery life - AA vs Lithium Ion - PentaxForums.com
The Ikea Ladda AAs significantly outperformed the Li-On, more than double the length. These are eneloop pro clones. If you have this type of battery on hand, use them with the battery grip instead of the Li-on. Put one Li-on battery in the body, and 6 AAs in the battery grip.
It takes a very long time to test batteries like I did, though. Make sure to label your batteries if you are going to test them. I used a sharpie. If you notice one particularly weak Li-on battery, leave it home.
There are battery analyzers for AAs that check the capacity that I use, also.
4) Have an assistant. Your wife volunteered you to record the event. Volunteer her to be your assistant. At the very least, she can watch your gear, if you have multiple cameras in different places, or audio gear on the stage while you are in the back.
5) If you have a recent high end smartphone, mount it on a tripod and use it as an additional video camera. My Samsung Note 20 Ultra can record 4K/60fps without time limit. You could record the whole event to one file that way. Provided you have enough space. At 75 Mbps, two hours will be over 64GB . Make sure your phone has the space. My Note 20 Ultra has a 512GB SD card.
6) as far as software, I recommend PowerDirector Ultra on Windows. It's quite easy to use. Much easier than the Sony stuff, IMO. You can synchronize audio and video tracks very easily. I use a single license for PD16 (old version). They have a subscription model now (PD 365) but you can still buy single license. The free demo version is too limited to be of any use, IMO. Certain CODECs don't work, and I think there is a watermark. You'll want to make sure you have a beefy machine to edit, though. Nothing under 16GB of RAM. And SSD for all your files.
7) bring infrared remote(s) for your Pentax DSLR bodies and set the drive mode to remote. This allows you to easily start/stop the video recording. Great if you have a single Pentax camera. Not as great if you have multiple and they are all in the line of sight of one remote. But if you have multiple, I would suggest setting them at different locations. You will need someone to watch each camera, though ...
8) check if any of your Pentax bodies actually overheats after manually restarting the recording. Try to record for 2 hours if you can doing 5 videos.
9) SD card of 64GB will be totally fine for Pentax since the max file size is 4GB. You will have about 16-20GB of video for 2 hours split in 5 files, or more, if you choose to stop/restart the camera more frequently.
10) set the battery grip priority to "grip first". This way you can replace batteries in the tray between numbers by just opening the grip, without having to disconnect the battery grip from the body.

Remove limit of 2000 shots for intervalometer. I got 5330 shots on one set of AA batteries. With one D-Li90 + 6 AA, I could probably get 7000 - 9000.

---------- Post added 06-04-21 at 06:04 PM ----------

Allow intervalometer to be used with electronic shutter to spare the mechanical shutter, and without Live view to save battery life.

Yes, the 6 Ikea AA do weigh more than a D-Li90 . And I agree with you the current draw will be different for other usages. This is the best test I could come up with that would run unattended.

A few weeks ago, I tested the intervalometer with the 6 AAs and the display off. I ended up hitting the limit of 2000 shots and restarting it several times. I got 5330 files before the batteries were out.

I'm not going to repeat that test with Lion, as I don't want to wear out my shutter any more than I have to.

Perhaps there should be a way to use the intervalometer with electronic shutter. I think the electronic shutter on the K-1 requires Live view, though, so it's not going to consume any less power than my test, except by turning brightness back to normal.

Well, you got a shot that's clean, shows no evidence of shake, nice colors, and shows your entire subject.
It doesn't fill the frame, but I'm guessing the 40MP on that P30 allows for some at least some cropping. Sure, it's not as good as if you had used a DSLR with a nice telephoto lens. You could have played with the depth of field more and have a nice booth that's missing here.
But under the circumstances you really can't complain.

They are supposed to be similar to Eneloop Pro. I haven't used them in cold conditions. Agree they are good for flash.

Hard to beat $6.99 for a set of 4. $21 gets you 12 which is 2 sets. Better than playing the lottery with 3rd party D-li90 IMO.

I decided to check the battery life for various types of batteries on my K-1 II.

The test protocol was simple :
No battery was in the camera body, only in the battery grip, with either the Li-on tray or AA tray.
All batteries tested were fresh out of the charger.
Camera had all power savings disabled (no auto-off).
LCD brightness was set to maximum.
Camera was set to Live View.

I then started recording video on another camera, my Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus, that doesn't have any silly 4GB or 25 minute limit to see when the camera would show the "Battery depleted" message.

Results below :

batteries by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

This may not be fully representative of real life battery life, but I was still quite surprised that the 6 AA Ikea Ladda outperformed the Pentax battery by such a huge margin. The camera lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes in Live view with the AAs, vs 1 hour and 3 minutes with the Pentax branded D-Li90.
One of my generic D-Li90 batteries lasted only 26 minutes and is a dud. The other nearly matched the Pentax branded at 1 hour.
The generics were both bought at the same time in 2019 as a set.
The brand name Pentax has a date code of 2017/11 and came with my K-1 II in April 2018.
I have had these AA Ikea Ladda for many years, don't know how long because I have hundreds of AAs.

I find changing the focus point on the Pentax quite easy, though I admit to using spot focus & recompose sometimes to. It's not easy when photographing moving pets/kids, though. But way easier to do on the Pentax than the Lumix.

I don't have another Pentax APS-C body. My mother does, though, a K-50. My sister's bf has a K-5 IIs also.

I have decided to take the GX85 with me. Hope I don't regret it. It's not going to be fun measuring the weight and volume of my luggage and carry on this weekend. Camera gear and Li-on batteries can't be checked in. The AA batteries can, though.

If I do end up taking a superzoom, I'll probably take the Sigma 18-300 APS-C rather than the older Tamron 28-300 A061 that is full-frame. The former is better optically even though it's only APS-C. It's also 28-450mm equivalent, so more reach. I have had a lot of decent shots with the Tamron, but none I would call truly excellent.

Yes, it's a good point. I live in a huge multi-level, 4600 sq ft. My camera gear is stored downstairs. I tend to live more upstairs. We don't have kids, but we have pets. There is also wildlife outside frequently enough. The moments are not easily captured with the high-end camera gear. My smartphone is almost always in my pocket, except when it's charging. So that's what I reach for in those moments. The pictures are not the greatest despite the 108MP on the Note 20 Ultra. Much better than nothing, though. I have not made many large prints from smartphone. Only one so far in 13 years of owning smartphones. That was a pic from the Note 20 Ultra.

One thing the Note 20 ultra can do that my DSLR and MILC can't is focus and shoot in the complete dark. It has radar for focusing in the dark. I wouldn't make a print at high ISO. But it's amazing that the pic can be taken at all ...

If your DSLR is within a few seconds walk, and not closer to one minute, as mine usually is, I wouldn't worry about flash. The K-70 is a high ISO camera. You can shoot without flash at high ISO. It has a built-in flash, also, unlike my K-1 II that requires one to be mounted on top. Even the small TT350P flash doubles the height of the camera, and that means it doesn't fit on my shelves with it installed. And if you don't want to worry about changing the lens, use a zoom with enough reach, like a Pentax 18-135, or Sigma 18-300 if you can find one. My Lumix GX85 also has a built-in flash. I think there is something to be said for a small camera body. The big DSLR body isn't always the best option.

Mirrorless cameras tend to be smaller bodies, but the advantage is negated with the biggest sensor, ie. the full-frame mirrorless. You'll have big and heavy lenses to mount there too. You win a bit of volume with the reduced flange distance. But you also lose the optical viewfinder. So I don't know how much sense it makes. The smaller sensor mirrorless cameras make more sense, IMO. I was checking specs on my GX85 + 12-35 lens and it's about the same volume as my first compact, an Olympus C3030Z that was 3MP, only 3x optical zoom and wrote to unreliable SmartMedia. It used 4AAs and was not light either. It didn't have an optical viewfinder. The GX85 has about 8 times the sensor size of that compact in the same volume. And the K-1 II has 4x the sensor size of the GX85. I guess I really need to learn to properly use the GX85. I don't have many good pictures from that Olympus compact. 3MP is not enough for a 13x19 print, even if the photo is good. At least 6MP is needed, 10+MP is better. On the other hand, I have taken many pics with the GX85 that could warrant printing at that size. Just nowhere near as many as with any of my Pentax bodies (K200D, K-30, and now K-1 II).

Thanks. I'll probably take at least one prime. That might be the one.

This is my first Panasonic and first m43. I just can't get used to its menus. I had to disable the touch screen because my nose kept hitting the screen. But changing the focus point with the hard buttons is plain horrible. The auto AF point always misses my subject. It's as if it's intentionally doing that. So much frustration with this camera.

I have the 12-32 and 45-150 lenses. One body plus one lens is definitely smaller than a super zoom. With both lenses it is about equivalent.

I'm visiting family actually, and my husband isn't going on this trip. I go to Paris every few years and I was overdue. I should have latitude to shoot pics as I wish. I definitely don't need fast lenses with the high ISO camera I have - K-1 II. But then again, the only fast lenses I own are very light primes - Pentax DA35, DA40, DA50, FA50. Taking them really doesn't make much difference in the bag. All of them together weigh less than one zoom.

The heavy lenses are the zooms - Pentax D FA 28-105, Sigma 18-300, Sigma 10-20, Tamron 28-300, and Sigma 70-300 . There is also the 800mm t-mount mirror lens.
I know I'm not taking the mirror lens, though. Did that once, to Vietnam. Wasn't worth the weight.

Pretty sure I'm taking at least the Sigma 10-20 and Pentax D FA 28-105 . Not really sure about either of the two superzooms. My Sigma 70-300 is a great and sharp lens, but big and heavy.

Still undecided about taking my m43 camera - the Lumix GX85. The ergonomics truly suck compared to the Pentax. The EVF is much less usable now that I started wearing glasses. And the programs really do very odd things that surprise me each time, and not in a good way. Main thing good about it is that it's small, but so is my smartphone.

Remove the 4GB limit for video files when using Exfat (SDXC)cards.

Split video into 4GB files when using FAT32 (SD/SDHC) cards, rather than stopping the video recording.

---------- Post added 06-02-21 at 03:47 AM ----------

Fix and flash and bracketing. When flash is attached and bracketing is set, only flash exposure compensation is changed. Aperture, shutter speed or ISO no longer change, as they do with flash disconnected. It should be possible for these settings to change with flash too.

---------- Post added 06-02-21 at 03:52 AM ----------

Have an option to wait for the flash to recharge before allowing the next shot to be taken. Ie. Flash shutter priority, as we have for shutter focus priority.

---------- Post added 06-02-21 at 03:54 AM ----------

Warn if the SD card is missing when turning the camera on, before taking a shot.

Warn if SD card is write protected also when turning on the camera. Don't wait until it's time to take or delete a shot.

I think it's more like a set of primes vs a zoom. There is no single focal length that's going to be good all the time, IMO, so no single prime makes a good walk-around lens.

On current high ISO cameras, wide aperture isn't really needed for low-light.

If you don't need long reach (say >100mm), a set of primes will likely be lighter than a zoom. But it's definitely less convenient having to change lenses.

I have a lot of lenses from 10mm to 800mm. Half zooms and half primes.
Still need to decide which ones not to take on my next trip to Paris on Sunday. The Tamron 28-300 FF is convenient. Sigma 18-300 is sharper and more versatile, but only APS-C.
At least op only has a K-70 and no FF vs APS-C to worry about.

I loved my K200D in 2008, and the K-30 that replaced it in 2012, as well as the K1 II I bought in 2018. I saw very meaningful improvements with each of them, and have no regrets about upgrading. The K1 II is undoubtedly the better camera, but it just didn't exist in 2008 or 2012.

I wouldn't want to go back to a CCD camera that maxed at 1600 ISO and was quite limiting shooting without a tripod. This isn't about print resolution, but being able to take the shot or not without shake/motion blur.

I'm not sure what it'll take for me to upgrade the camera next time. There's really not much to complain about, at least as a stills camera. Writing to the SD card could be faster, but that's about it. I expect the K1 III will fix that, but that change alone wouldn't be enough to get me to upgrade.

Video is another story. I think Pentax is hopeless in that area, though.

No problem. I wouldn't buy it without researching it :-)

So far, I have come up empty on my quest.

I got an APS-C ultrawide lens for now, Sigma 10-20 f3.5 .

Full gory tests in FF mode in these posts below :

A test of 4 ultrawides on a K-1 - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com
A test of 4 ultrawides on a K-1 - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com

Conclusion : it's not really usable in FF mode except at 20mm wide open. Or with a TC at 12mm (about 17mm effective).

I guess this lens, with an 82mm filter set, will have to do for my next trip to Paris - I leave on Sunday. But I'll keep looking for something really full-frame that can do better.
Still haven't decided on all the lenses I'll take with me, but that one is definitely on the list.

So, I shot the test targets on the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 . Besides the vignetting, corners are really hopeless in FF mode except at 20mm wide open as below. This is corrected to the best of my ability.

2021-06-01_83-2 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

I tested in APS-C mode as well. Vignetting is 100% correctable in that case. But even then, corners don't become sharp until f5.6 or f8.

This is 10mm f8 APS-C mode.

2021-06-01_55-2 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

I'm going to try with the teleconverter next and if see if there is any hope for FF mode.

---------- Post added 06-01-21 at 10:14 PM ----------

Test target shots with the 1.4x MC4 TC.

10mm + TC, FF mode . 14mm equivalent. f8 . Corners useless.

2021-06-01_9-3 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

12mm + TC, FF mode . 16.8mm equivalent. f8 . There is some useful information in the corners in this case.
2021-06-01_3-3 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

14mm + TC, FF mode . 19.6mm equivalent. f8 . There is some useful information in the corners in this case also.
2021-06-01_15-3 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

Conclusion : the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 is only useful in FF mode on a K-1 II at 20mm wide open.

When using the Tamron MC4 1.4x teleconverter, one can go a little wider, using 12mm on the lens, which is 16.8mm equivalent, ie. almost 17mm. But the lens has to be stopped down to f8 to get acceptable corners.

My guess is that at 17mm, a true full-frame lens would be preferable, but I don't have such a lens to compare with.

It looks like the teleconverter is really more than 1.4x as it claims. The "19.6mm" shot (14mm + TC) is significantly closer up than the 20mm shot with no TC.
I think I read before that this TC is really a 1.5x TC rather than 1.4. These shots prove it. The position of the camera in all these test shots was not changed. It was very close to the wall, about 1ft.

So, I received my Sigma 10-20 f3.5 today. Haven't done any test of sharpness quality, but the images look good, much like my old Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 that I sold.

I just did some tests in FF mode on my K-1 II. It's unusable at 10 and 12mm, which was expected. Shots below are unprocessed (no lens or vignette correction) unless marked otherwise. Still had to use LR to convert DNG to JPEG as Flickr wouldn't accept the DNGs SOOC. The lens hood was off the lens completely (not reversed). No filter used, either.

10mm wide open :
2021-06-01_1 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

12mm wide open :
2021-06-01_18 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

At 14mm, there is still a fair amount of vignette :
2021-06-01_35 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

At 15mm wide open, still a lot of vignette :
2021-06-01_52 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

Stopping down the lens actually makes the vignette worse.
15mm f22 :
2021-06-01_68 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

16mm wide open. The vignette is similar to 15mm.

2021-06-01_69 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

17mm wide open, a little less vignetting :
2021-06-01_86 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

20mm wide open has the least amount of vignetting, but still quite noticeable :
2021-06-01_103 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

Here it is at 15mm, f4.0, with the LR lens profile applied, and vignette correction setting set to the max value (200). You can still see vignette, especially in the top left corner.
2021-06-01_53 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

And here is the 20mm shot with max vignette correction. Vignette still visible, but less than at 15mm.
2021-06-01_103-2 by Julien Pierre, on Flickr

I would say for FF mode, the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 is :
a) significantly better than the Sigma 10-20 f4-f5.6 version, which showed a black image circle at all focal lengths and is just plain unusable
b) compared to the Tamron 10-24, the vignetting is worse between 14-20mm. Just eyeballing it, the overall image quality (sharpness) looks way better in the center, though. I haven't compared edges and corners yet. The above shots are not a good test for that, since there are objects in many different focal planes.

What's surprising on this lens is that stopping it down does not help with the vignetting. I tested all apertures at all the above focal lengths. The lens has the least amount of vignetting at f3.5 or f4.0 . Anything higher causes vignetting to actually get worse. Admittedly, I was just handholding and not using a tripod or remote, but I think my data set (119 images) is sufficient.

Another difference between the two Sigma versions is that in Lightroom, this lens shows as "SIGMA 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM" and is automatically recognized, whereas the old f4-f5.6 showed up as "Sigma or Tamron Lens", oddly. Another Sigma lens I have, the 77-300 APO DG, shows up as just "Sigma lens". This is probably something to do with the chip data in the lens.

The Sigma 10-35 f3.5 version is quieter to focus than the older f4.0-f5.6 version, too.
The old version takes 77mm filters, and the new one 82mm, so I had to buy yet another filter set.

Have yet to test how much worse the vignetting will get with a filter on. Polarizer is the main one I want to use.

I think I will keep looking for a true full frame ultrawide lens for my K-1 II. I'm not sure there is any to be had that can take front threaded filters - see thread I started below.

Yes, Chris and Jordan at DP review mentioned they only had their camera for a short time before they had to send it to the Seattle team for the studio scenes testing. It is the same camera body.

The DNGs I downloaded from DPR indicated manual focus.

Honestly, I wouldn't put it past them to have messed up focus for those shots. This is DPR we are talking about.

I find the digital preview superior, especially in low-light. Even on the K-1 II, the optical viewfinder is too small to properly evaluate depth of field, much less fine focus.

The digital preview setting will also fire the flash, if you have one attached, whereas the optical preview won't.

Thanks. I think I'm well aware of the limitations, but I still want to have the option of mounting a polarizer.

Yeah, I don't normally pull stunts like that.

There is no SD storage in the AA tray in the battery grip. Only for the DI-li90 tray. So, if you want AA, no extra SD storage. But you still have to buy the battery grip for that LOL.
