Coming back after a few years with Leica, I've renewed my K-1 with the DFA 50/1.4. What an incredible lens! As many here, I got the K-3ii in late 2015 and used it a bit before getting the K-1 in early 2016. I've played with it anew, with its small and light lenses, and it's a joy. I personally do not see the need to upgrade to K-3iii, but I'm eager to see what K-1iii will be like. The new star prime series is stellar.

I'm really surprised folks are considering spending money on SD cards as a separate line item. A few years ago, I came up with the following backup strategy: SD card is write-once, then read-only. I buy 16 GB cards for $10 each, quickly ingest them, and store away. With the megapixel count growing, the 16 GB card now fills up in a day, creating a nice unit of quick import and backup. Fuji X-Pro2, at 24MP, can store ~440 compressed RAW+JPEGs on one, K-2II about 224 DNG+JPEGs, and K-1 only 158 DNG+JPGs. Basically I never reuse them and consider them supplies, equal to a Starbucks latte a day. They never block me on a K-1 either (Class 10 Transcends or PNYs are fine at 60-90 mbps).

Anyone still pondering why DNG must read Peter Krogh's The DAM Book (thedambook.com). He taught me Adobe Lightroom 1 Beta and I've been using DNG ever since. The K10D just came out then and he was puzzled, since hhis workflow started with RAW=>DNG conversion. I'm still doing it since the preview is not full-size out of camera and also I need for the DNG to be properly checksummed and verifiable.

So the fun part of this, before D-FAs, I was eyeing the Sigma Art lenses as the next LBA target. Now I can safely wait until they produce the new batches that are K-1 safe.:) There will be a whole new market, and every Sigma transaction will be accompanied with a clarification: this lens is made after K-1 Sigmacalypse, it's safe on K-1!

If I hold the K-1 body alone, without supporting the attached 70-200 with my hand or tripod, do you guys think the torque on the mount is too high? With a grip it would probably be comfortable enough. I found that I can talk on the phone and shoot one-handed already...

Do you carry a lens like this with a tripod collar even without a tripod, to serve as a handle?

The three D-FA zooms. A new WotanCraft DSLR bag. Gym passes to develop your muscles to carry all that. The therapy to assuage guilt.

Yeah for that range I got the new Fuji 100-400mm, which is basically as big as the 70-200. So I'd rather take my X-Pro2 in case I need that range. I'm certainly not going over that weight, which I can still carry in a proper single bag (has to be a tall one).

So as some of you know, I'm a Pentax and Fuji guy, and I love my gear compact. But, with the K-1 extravaganza, I couldn't resist getting 24-70. Then I love wide angle and just had to get the 15-30. At 1kg, it was already on the verge of too big, but I'm able to justify it with the only true UWA zoom and barely there with size. Finally, having 2 out of 3, I just had to try the grand prize, the 70-200. I've got it today, and by the weight of the box I knew right away it's going to be heavy. And it was. It comes in its own little case with little feet and a handle. It is fantastically built but it is very, very heavy, at 1.8kg.

I've seen those folks walking around with the long Canon white tubes, dangling off their necks and almost reaching the ground, like an excited donkey. (This is what they say about the Fuji 55-200 that retracts downwards uncontrollably. That Fuji is minuscule compared to the 70-200). The 70-200 is internal zoom and overall beautiful. Still I'm wondering how much use it will have given the weight.

How do you guys use those lead pipe kind of things? Carry it alone? Use in a studio? Do you just get trained and adapt to that weight?

Detaching the tripod mount from D-FA 70-200

Just got the 70-200. Looks awesome. How do I detach the tripod mount? I loosen the Lock button and wiggle it a bit, it doesn't budge.

... Ah, my instruction manual folded over the part where it says to push on the lock button. :)

So, when do you guys use the tripod with this monster, and when do you just carry it?

I got the 24-70 and 15-30 in advance. Still a bit terrified by their weight, but they sit pretty on the bigger body. The 15-30 is suddenly the UWA it promised to be! The trusted 31, 58, 77, 100 are going to enjoy it immensely.

The K-1 arrived overnight form B&H. Amazing. Barely bigger than K-3II, feels faster, field of view huge, all lenses suddenly shorter, quality amazing. Adobe DNG Convertor got upgraded for K-1 on 4/28 (9.5.1) so processed right away -- quality excellent, noise low, lenses shine.

I've started with DSLRs in 2007, with the K10D, and this is my first full-frame. I must say I'm impressed, and don't know if any other community will have so much fun attaching legendary D-FA and FA lenses and seeing what amazing photos come out! It's like we got another life on all the gear and memories! This is unique, and we can enjoy it all summer.:)

Protecting 15-30 front element

I'm always using B+W glass protectors on my lenses, but 15-30 is the first I got with the front element so bulging a filter seems irrelevant. The hood certainly protects a lot, but how do you feel walking around me with this thing?

I'd love to have a quality lens, but at 2kg it just seems too unwieldy. I feel sorry for the Canon guys lugging a giant pipe in a case, and the 24-70 is about as heavy as it is reasonable to dangle on one's neck. Do you guys intend to carry this lens around or put it in a studio or in the car?

Manual Focus Tips

So I'm playing with Voigtlander Nokton 58mm now, and it turns out this is not too bad as the camera is beeping when focus is achieved, which looks at the right time in focusing. However I have two reservations:

-- it asks to enter the focusing distance, and the nearest value is 55mm. K-3II seems to only offer a menu there, so I can't enter 58mm.
-- the focusing and beeping seems incessant when the focus mode switch is in AF position. E.g. if the last focus was on infinity, everything at infinity seems to cause the focus confirmation blink and beep. Turning the switch to MF seems to stop this. Probably the effect of AF-A, so AF tries to confirm focus continuously? Is there any recommendation on keeping focus mode AF or MF for confirmaion?

Manual Focus Tips

This is not a very easy state of affairs! I'm not feeling like messing with my camera to install screens, would rather have it done in a clean room with proper equipment. Should be a factory-service option... Also am not willing to sacrifice brightness. Ideally would be an add-on solution I could add with manual lenses... Very strange that a DSLR with optical path and legacy lenses does not provide an easy way to do MF these days. Wonder if the FF will be better.
