645z versus X1D

That's one heck of a setup on the 600mm!....home-made rear stabiliser attached to the camera??
I have just acquired the 67 300mm F4 M* with Fotodiox 645 adapter and IQ is stunning....although still have to be careful with shutter shock vibration at slow speeds on the 645Z , even on Manf. tripod/geared head etc , and all the requisite precautions....needs higher ISO's to get the 'best' results. Will also be trying with 1.4 extender - when it eventually arrives from the Christmas backlog!.

Very interesting review and the only one I've seen with direct hands-on comparison - Hassy still has the 'brand' name, but your nitty-gritty comparison on specifics is very illuminating! Excellent piece of work. (FYI- the only Hassy which I have seen recently which really impressed me was the older H5D with the larger 39mmx50mm sensor , but that was in a very controlled studio environment with strobes, not field landscape work.)
I concur with many others that the IQ from the 28-45mm on the 645Z is excellent, as is the 90mm macro , especially in the cost/benefit/IQ calculation , despite the weight/bulk issues....higher ISO's to compensate don't degrade IQ that much in my experience, and I'm printing to 24"x36" on my Epson 7900. Experience with my used (Ebay Japan sourced) 300mm F4 M* (67) is a bit limited, but I really like what I've seen so far....IQ is amazing for such a 'legacy' lens, although there is some evidence of the shutter shock issues others have mentioned despite all the usual hardware and technique precautions. BTW- I also like the 165 F4LS (67) lens which also delivers excellent IQ on the 645Z.

New lens from a Swiss maker in Hassy V mount!

Here's the text in full from Steven Lee, founder of NWS, in response to my enquiries....seems constructive, and similar to the primary target market identified by Hartblei/Hcam in Germany, but they do seem to be interested in the needs of the MF market too....watch this space....

Dear Mr. Moore,

Thank you for your interest in our 23APO and Akrobat products.

Before we began defining our product specifications, we researched the market and our intended target customers extensively to make sure we can offer solutions for unmet market needs at prices that customers will pay. Then we designed each with price targets that are commensurate with performance and market expectations. We plan to release these prices once our prototypes have been fully vetted by beta- testers and our factory partners confirmed their offers based on final specifications.

One note about your choice of the Pentax 645z is that it has quite a deep body so even with the flange focal distance of the Hasselblad V-mount at 74,9mm, there is less than 5mm margin for any adapter solution. There are on-axis adapter solutions available but this limitation does not allow a 1-axis shift adapter or the Akrobat to work with it as a back – there is simply insufficient room. Given our choice of the Hasselblad V-mount, the 645z may not be a mount we can readily serve if tilt and shift are absolutely required.

The 23APO and 110APO were designed primarily to serve 24x36 FF cameras, even though their image circles cover some MF formats. We did so because there are many more FF cameras, and they are very much in need of a high resolution ultra-wide-angle with edge-to-edge sharpness. For many working professionals with Art Director clients, they have mostly relied on the more profitable FF 5Ds/5D Mk IV and D850 than any MFDB. In fact, until the GFX and the X1D came along, there were few reasons to believe that MF would ever thrive again beyond the few very well-heeled who buy IQ3 and 4s.

Since our public announcement about a month ago, we received tremendous positive feedback from the MF market and it appears there is an obvious void we can fill. You voiced similar needs – an ultra-wide-angle that fits MF 33x44 cameras. We take these comments to heart and are considering how best to meet these needs, and will announce next steps when we arrive at possible solutions including new offerings.

For major events such as new products or events, we issue press releases. We plan to release progress updates on our website as soon as we are confident and ready so please check back once in a while to get the latest news. To keep you up to date, your name is added to our mailing list.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any one of us at info@nws-instruments.ch , or write me directly. We will do our best to answer your questions.

Thank you again.

All the best,
Steven Lee

Very nice results....I recall shooting the 'bathing apes' in freezing winter in Japan with airborne water droplets from the hot springs they were bathing in, condensing on the cold camera body and lens...some of the most challenging shooting conditions I've ever been in...the things we do to "get the shot!"....

"Upgrading" decision, Pentax 645Z or Nikon D850(810)

I owned the D810 and found it to be an excellent camera, with all the flexibility that 35mm brings...but careful lens choice is necessary to maximise the IQ from the sensor.
I eventually sold all the Nikon gear in favour of the 645Z , and invested in a mix of current (90mm , 28-45mm and 55mm) legacy lenses (150mm) and the (excellent value) 67 lenses 165LS, 105mm, and 300mm M*.
My experience is that the main difference is 'better' IQ (more pixels) , but the latitude of the 645Z files in post-processing is amazing.....highlight and shadow both respond very well to changes during manipulation, and the newest lenses deliver astonishing image detail....the 'older' 150mm is no slouch either!
My only caveat would be that if your longer term markets might include action/sports then 35mm would be more suitable simply due to size/weight and ease of use in the field (i.e what if portraiture is also a saturated market in your area?).
Unless and until a 100MP Pentax comes along, its very doubtful that I would switch , despite some of the well know drawbacks (e.g. tendency to image blur due to shutter-shock at slower shutter speeds, and poor Ricoh field service) .
HSS is now possible on the 645Z ( see Mark Kitaoka's novel trigger solution elsewhere in this forum, even used on his 'old' Einstein studio units), and I've no doubt that other solutions will eventually surface....

First and third images look stellar on my big screen....just traded my 67 300mm M* for the 645 300mm AF (with some misgivings as the 67 lens produces such great images), as the 200g weight saving and added tripod foot are necessary with such an unwieldy lens IMHO....hope the 'Green Ring' performance is as good as the 67 version….my used version is on the way from Japan....

Thks Mike - I had one and it delivered excellent image quality, but I found the lack of AF on occasions frustrating, hence the idea of switching to the 645 FA version...there are some available on the web in the $700-900 range (and the older A for $500, but same lack of AF issue)….

Hi Mike - see pics attached....the collar which fits over the lens front lugs is VERY tight!....rubberised ring inside the collar makes a very close fit , but stops any movement when it's on....the oversized grads and ND's are amazing (but v. expensive!).....the holder comes with movie lighting style wings/barn-doors to minimise side reflections.....Lucroit is Spanish and offer collars for most w/a lenses including the 'exotics' such as Phase One through Formatt Hitech ....no vignetting with these oversize filters.......getting an 82mm collar for my 28-45mm zoom.....the Lee 105mm polariser will also fit that one!....
