GR II now selling for $500 new. Time to buy?

Believe me, after being in the Pentax and Olympus systems in the past, I'm not eager to buy back into an ILC, much less a defunct one. I've tried the NX system cameras before and wasn't super impressed. My days of eclectic gear acquisition are behind me, and I'd much rather have something that's simple that I know well and love to shoot...but that still doesn't stop me from looking at weirdo cams like the Sigma Quattros every once in a while...

Just adding my voice to the collective: after being disappointed by the GR III's redesigned controls and higher price, I've also bought a GR II. My GR I still works great (a couple hot pixels on the sensor but no dust near as I can tell), but I really don't want to have to learn a new camera. I've also ordered the GM1, GH3, and GW3 before they become scarce. Last call for an excellent camera at a low price!

I need a GR III in my life. Having seen what the latest 24-MP Pentax DSLRs can do, a new sensor in the next GR will do wonders, especially if they go with On-chip PDAF. Not holding my breath on FF, however. I don't think I'd want a bigger GR and I don't think they can match the size of the APS-C version but I'd love to be proven wrong. Was hoping to hear about it for CP+ since that's the target demo for the GR (If you haven't sampled Japanese camera culture, it's something else!! They're the biggest nerds!). Here's hoping we get a new GR sometime very soon.

GR Or X70?

One note that I don't think anyone's properly addressed: the X70 is not a great one-handed camera. The fact that the lens doesn't retract (you need to pull a lens cap on and off constantly) is a big downgrade in my opinion. There's also the control scheme: you need to use the aperture ring or shutter dial to control those two things. The more boiled-down controls of the GR let me take the camera from a pocket, hit the power button, dial in my preferred control (I shoot Av all the time) and adjust exposure comp on the rocker. And just as easily, the camera goes back. Easy peasy.

That said, the X70 is easily the better performer. AF speed is gonna be faster, and I'd also bet that the WiFi app is probably much nicer (Fuji's been doing smartphone connectivity much longer than Ricoh).

Announcement no one is talking about: Macro converter GM-1

You're right that it wasn't completely unreported, but the mainstream photo press like DPR or Photorumors didn't mention this new accessory anywhere I saw.

The question I have for the GR faithful is...did the GR really need improved close-up capabilities? I've used the stock lens setup as a macro-ish solution a few times and it's great if you crop in a little bit. I've always wanted the wide converter, but I've held off because it's big and completely changes the camera's handling characteristics. I'm afraid that this conversion lens might be the same way. Thoughts?

Hi! The other day when Ricoh announced the limited-edition silver GR II, they also announced a new macro converter called GM-1 (man, Panasonic's gotta be a little peeved with these product names...GH-3, GM-1...). Here are the specs from Ricoh's Japanese site:

Shooting distance is approx. 4 - 8.5 cm. Hood and Adapter (GH-3) are required to use this lens.

¥12,800 (approx. $108 USD)

According to CIPA, even with that lovely, bulky prism, the K-S1 weighs two grams less than the K-01. So, if you're fine with a K-01, you should be dandy with a K-S1 given its superior ergonomics. Does weight even matter that much once there's a lens mounted on the thing?

I'm a K-01 owner and will defend it to haters but you folks gotta move on. Pentax has a superior compact interchangeable lens camera in its stable right now. It is uncompromised in the ways the K-01 was and yet retains a quirky, unique character all its own.

You basically just described a K-S1. The LCD isn't a higher resolution but you can use the OVF if you need something to hold up to your face. Improved AF? Yup. Contrast in LV, Phase Detection when using OVF. I'm not sure about the burst speed but it's rated as lower (5.4 fps) likely due to the 20 MP res of the sensor. Given the tweaked processor I'd be inclined to think that it's an improvement in continuous shooting.

Do you guys get it yet? The K-02 exists! You can buy it this very minute for an excellent price! It's called the K-S1! Celebrate! :D

Let's be realistic everyone--the company has very, very limited resources. They're not going to divert from their current legacy lens families and camera designs because they have a lot invested. Do you seriously want the Ricoh version of the Leica T? Four whole lenses and counting! Lackluster compatibility with M-mount glass! Ricoh already tried to make a mirrorless system with GXR, which, even though it was interesting, was a failure.

The roadmap has no place for yet another experiment like the K-01. After the (partially unwarranted) blowback on K-S1 from the press, Ricoh is going to double down on being conservative and leaning on traditional SLRs with K-mount. FF is going to be a standard DSLR with signature Pentax tech and...its major selling point? Native K-mount support, of course! Why would you wish for anything but that? Keep it simple!

If you want mirrorless, buy into a mirrorless system that was designed that way from the ground up. We're not hurting for amazing, affordable choices from Fuji, Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic. Mirrorless designs only make sense if you're going to take advantage of the shorter flange distance and make lenses/bodies explicitly for it. That way the camera can be more compact. Legacy mirrorless is a contradiction in terms.

The closest you'll ever get to a K-02 is the K-S1. K-mount compatibility, compact, quirky looking, with faster AF and a 20 MP sensor. Plus, you get a bonus OVF! It's arguably a better use of that empty mirrorbox. Just shoot it in LV mode if you're so against using mirrors.

They could have added an accessory port for a hotshoe EVF. Or a flip-up LCD would have been brilliant for waist-level shooting. But, as it stands, the GR is probably a better product for not indulging every single one of our fantasies. It's what Ricoh wants it to be and that's partly what makes it so special.

KEH does a great job shipping stuff to me. Everything I've ordered has been double-wrapped, with padding/airbags in the box and bubble wrap around the article. One time they even sent me a free sticker

OK so my DA* 16-50mm arrived a bit ago. Was severely underwrapped, coming in the stock box inside a padded white bubble mailer. The box had a ding in the corner. The lens itself looks like it made it through the ordeal unscathed and actually is in great shape. Everything was in the box including caps, hood, and pouch.

Hahaha I didn't select anything special just the standard shipping option. It looks like it came from New Jersey, and I'm in Boston so it was basically 2-day shipping which isn't uncommon if I order from Adorama or B&H since they're not too far south of me.

My lens is on a truck for delivery now! I'll post some pics of what a "reconditioned" lens/packaging looks like. Should be interesting.

I got the 20-40 for a smidge under $600 in great shape but I don't like the limited zoom range. WR is nice to have (and I appreciate the small size) but it's only slightly wider than my widest prime (21 Limited). It's a nice lens, don't get me wrong, but I bought it because I couldn't justify a used "ticking time bomb" 16-50 with no warranty.

For $400 though? And, hopefully with the SDM fixed right out of the gate (plus 90-day warranty)? Sounds like an acceptable gamble for a like-new lens. Glad I'm still in the return period for the Limited zoom :)

Now, I wonder if Ricoh was just doing some spring warehouse cleaning or if there's really some more updated/new lenses coming soon. We'll see!

Just took a gamble on a 16-50. Returning the used 20-40 limited I bought earlier this month. Net savings are almost $200 for a lens that's faster throughout the zoom range. Sure, why not?

The K-3 II is a sign of things to come so I'd be shocked at this point if the full frame camera omits GPS in favor of a flash...but that means it could very well get 4.5 stops of IBIS, Pixel Shift Resolution and all the great features in the K-3 II that are new...

Ricoh definitely did that, but the muddled messaging along with the insane wails of some around these parts and elsewhere made it very hard to pick out. Ricoh's going along with two Pentax ranges, the core cameras and the S/Innovation line. K-3 II and FF are next year's core cameras, while K-S1 and K-S2 (which were always designed to be sold side-by-side, in spite of what many have said!) are for getting new users into the family. Two distinct lines aimed at different audiences, with entry/flagship models in each.

I understand the griping about the "missing" flash but make no mistake—this camera is positioned as the ultimate field rig. Rugged, weathersealed, compact, now with GPS and compass with a great low price for the performance. Imagine hikers and outdoorsy types using it. While it's ostensibly the Pentax flagship, Ricoh is playing to the brand's strengths with those who want great DSLRs for active, outdoor work rather than the hardcore pro studio set. Pixel Shift resolution is great for those folks, who will likely use non-optical flash triggers or other lights for product photography etc. Believe me, they did the market research and this camera is doing everything right from a market perspective.

So, even though it's not a camera for some vocal people here, there's little reason to complain. It's good to see that Ricoh is trying to mix it up these days and obviously sees the value in the Pentax lineup and marque. Compared to last year or the year before, 2015 is going to be a banner year for this system. Ricoh wants to bring new people into the fold, and the K-3 II is just another refinement of the recipe to attract those people. Now how about some revised lenses!

Other than for C-AF, this makes the Canon 7D Mark II look like a cruel joke. Why would anyone buy one of those? $1700 for what? Yet again, Ricoh provides great bang for the buck.

Depending on the machine, anything under ISO 1600 is generally okay...but as noted above, don't put film into checked luggage. The X-ray scanners used for checked baggage is much more powerful than what they use at the security checkpoint!
