That's what I did. Not all had a big presence on the net but did get an idea of what was going on in contemporary photography.
Anyway...

1. This one was easy for me. Fan Ho
He knows the power and language of the image. Power with subtitly, art with the eye of a journalist.
All that and mercifully he doesn't allow his ego to get between the image and the viewer.

2. Holly Andres
From the, apparently, mundane to the sublime, from kitsch to art? But you need to see her full collection to know where she is going with it.
Hard to articulate but she got to me. Perhaps it's that Midwestern middle America ambiance that I know so well - my own roots. Perhaps its the women's viewpoint.
Even her technique is sort of point and shot to the level of an art form. At the end of the day she spoke to me with her images and that's all that really matters.

As of yesterday morning this was all those mentioned and I checked them out as best as I could on the net:

Sony moves to #2 in US Full Frame Market/Sales

For the last fifty years or so Asian production has been successful based on the premise "give the market [primarily the Western market] what it wants".

The problem for photo hardware production now is that the market no longer knows what it wants.

The very definition of what "photography" means is shifting under our feet and no one knows where it's going to end up. That's very scary stuff if you are responsible for billions of dollars of invested capital, the economic well being of a 100,000 employees or even, to some extent, the national economy, the survival of the firm and, of course - the real bottom line, your own survival in the firm.

One thing for sure in the next few years - "heads will roll".

Haven't seen many Grosbeaks around the yard this Spring so this one was a treat.

Also added a E-M10 II to the E-M10. The E-M10 will remain on the back end of the 560mm while the Mark II will be my walk around piece (better SR which I don't need on the tripod mounted 560mm).

OK.

Not all technologies's purpose is the same.
I think the highest order of technology is that which logically follows out of the purpose of the tool. Back in the 19th century the "shutter" was a lens cap over the lens. With the increasing speed of emulsions it became obvious that the shutter had to become automatic and predictable and it did. The same sort of thing can be said when SLRs got the auto diaphragm - it's purpose logically follows from the purpose of a camera. I don't hear photographers wishing they could go back to using a 1932 Exacta SLR for the sheer joy of experiencing the technical process of using that level of tech.

For me "process" can mean the technical or creative process. I highly value gear that technically gets out of my way and allows me to concentrate on the one thing that technology can't do - create a meaningful beautiful image. To the extent that the A9, for instance, allows the rather specialized sports-action shooter to do that it's a good tool for their purposes and if not then not.

Speaking only for myself I took no offense at what you were getting at - the natural laws that govern who and what ultimately prevails on the planet are not artifacts of human culture and morality, but the basic underlying reality for all of us whether a virus or a Donald Trump.

At the present primitive state of human culture I would guess the virus will prevail.

Speaking only for myself - yes.

As a clarification I don't think I would ever say "I took that" but I would say here's a tiny piece of the beauty of the world and I hope my image conveys at a bit of that beauty to you or, at least, words to that effect.

Optical finder or EVF?

"But if there’s one thing that a TTL optical finder can’t do, it’s accurately simulate actual exposure. You see what the scene sees, you get some indication of what the camera’s meter thinks the exposure should be based on a set of predetermined parameters, and then it’s up to your individual experience to determine if you need to apply compensation or not. It’s nigh on impossible to determine precise exposure to the right simply by looking, even if you have some significant experience. On the other hand, the EVF can not only show you exactly what the sensor is seeing, but also any preview effects, for example to help visualize in monochrome. There’s also magnification and peaking for more precise focusing." - Thein

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year Amazon made me an offer I couldn't refuse. A new Oly E-M10 with the two kits lens' for 400 bucks. At the time I bought it I knew little about the OVF vs EVF debate and bought it only for the crop advantage over the K5 with the 560mm when birding.

The long and the short of it is that Thein is spot on (above). I'm a RAW ETTR shooter and found that the ability to have a live histogram on the VF and the ability to know before I pull the trigger that the histogram is right where I want it is a big step up in quality over the k5 (they both have 16mp sensors). In fact if I use full manual with auto ISO I have auto ETTR exposure - push the Av or Sv around and the histogram stays just to the left of burn without any input on my part.

In fact my experience with the Olys have been so satisfactory that I just bought an updated E-M10 Mark II for general walk around use and the E-M10 will remain permanently on the back end of the 560mm for birding.

I'm a happy camper so far as EVFs are concerned at least for my purposes.

By that logic, and I'm not necessarily disputing it, in five years or so we may have a photo industry driven by optical designs with third party suppliers of bodies to accommodate those glass systems.

One thing I'm pretty sure of - in five years or so the structure of the consumer photo industry will look very different than it has for the last 150 years. The whole definition of what "photography" means to the consumer is being redefined by the market right now and no one knows where it's going to end up.

May we live in interesting times.

Pepi. 16 pounds, muscular and almost two years old.

He had it out with the neighbor's Lab when it came on our back deck and Pepi prevailed.
But it wasn't a fair fight. Pepi was on his home turf and the Lab is a gentle creature that visits with us out on the deck.
We had the owner bring the Lab into our house and let the two of them sniff it out and it worked. They both ended up grooming each other and all is well and the Lab is back to visiting with us on the porch for the summer. From what I have seen of Labs they must make good family pets - calm, gentle and friendly.

My cheapo 148 buck Panasonic 25mm - just got it yesterday.
A few test shots wide open, looks to be a winner so far as I can tell so far.
All hand held shots nothing special- just point and shoot. All available light.

This is not art just test shots.

Yes.
I will take it down another step from aps-c to m4/3.

The K5 and the Oly E-M10 both more or less equal so far as FL is concerned with their respective kit lens.
k5=2.25 pounds and the Oly at 0.95 pounds.

The long and the short of it: The m4/3 has replaced the k5 as my general walk around body and especially for birding with the 560mm.
So far as any difference in IQ it's nothing to lose sleep over compared to it's advantages. The Oly is not only smaller and lighter but with the EVF I have much better exposure control because of the active live view histogram display. This is a big deal for a RAW ETTR shooter.

Judge for yourself - adult male House Sparrow taken with the 560mm at a distance of about 30 feet.

A bit over $400 bucks. Actually $2600 with custom optics to my specs with Ohara FPL53 fluorite objectives in 2006 when I had it made. The same objective glass as in the Canon L series telephotos. I have no idea what it would cost now. On a direct one on one test the scope out resolves the Canon EF 600mm f/4 because it does not have a telephoto group to soften things up as a true telephoto like the Canon does.

This is limited by the outdated k20 sensor but you can get the idea of it's resolving power at about 30 feet distance. In other words the glass easily out resolves the sensor. FF and crop...

Just thinking further about what I had said about crop factor.

I have a bunch of previously posted files from all of my cameras. Q, Q-S1, mu4/3, istDL, k20, k5.
Care to guess which is which?
NOTE: size and crop means nothing - these were all processed, cropped (or not) and sized for other purposes than this post.
Same glass for all pics (560mm).
Nothing definitive but just for the fun of it...

1,2,3,4,5 and 6.

I don't use a blind.

I just set up in plain sight at a distance that respects the birds comfort zone and let the glass do the walking.

I never go bashing through the woods looking for shots of opportunity. Normally I know exactly what species I'm looking for and when and were to find them. But I have an immense advantage over most. My family homesteaded this county 160 years ago and I. have birded every nook and cranny of it. I pretty much know everyone and everyone knows me so there is hardly anywhere worth birding that I don't have ready access to. Everyone pretty much recognizes crazy Wildman when he first comes up the driveway in his little Nissan loaded with all his exotic gear. This isn't Manhattan or LA.

If things are slow I'm usually in a beautiful spot so I snap on the macro and see what the plants and butterfly's are up to.

Anyway it's "setup and they will come" for me and if not there is plenty else besides messing with photo gear when you are in the woods.

My "default" spot when I just want to get away from it all. In a few weeks it will be alive with warblers when the main migration comes through...
