Yes, I had, and it made little difference noticeable difference at the range that I normally shoot. I wound up exchanging the lens. The second copy was significantly better, but as Adam said above, still not that much better than the 28-105mm. I later picked up the D FA 70-200, which has become my favorite lens and is immeasurably better. I had hoped that the D FA 24-70 would have had more comparable performance.

Thanks for getting back to me.
Yes, I had assumed that was why the Memory menu item was grayed out. I was reasonably certain that I had saved things properly, but just tried it again to be sure. After setting up the P mode the way that I wanted and saving it to a user mode, I then checked the user mode that I had saved it to and verified that the parameters had transferred in their entirety. However, after cycling the power, they were all zeroed out again.

I have been through the manual repeatedly and am apparently missing something....
When I modify the Custom Image setting, I am unable to save the individual parameters (saturation, hue, high/low key, etc) within the image finishing tone (landscape, vibrant, etc) within any of the 5 programmable user modes. The "memory" menu item on page 5 of the Record Mode menu is grayed out and inaccessible from U1-U5. I tried reprogramming the User Modes after setting up the P mode the way that I want, including the individual parameters (and verified that the "memory" menu item was accessible and "Custom Image" was checked). After saving the P mode to one of the U modes and cycling the power, the parameters are once again cleared and "memory" is grayed out again. After saving a User Mode, I've checked the "Saved Settings" menu item and the parameters all show that they have been changed, but after cycling the power, they are right back to the default settings. At some point, it obviously worked because U1 and U2 do have some parameters which are not the default ones, but now I cannot change and save new settings to either of those modes - the camera goes right back to the same parameters after saving and cycling the power.
I'd appreciate any input!
Thanks.

Thanks, Adam. I was hesitating on exchanging it because I'd hate to have Adorama get a used copy back if it's performance is typical.

I recently picked up a FA 24-70 and am seriously unimpressed with it's performance on my K-1. I was wondering if the example that I got is typical, or if it would be worthwhile to exchange it before the time runs out. In relatively dim light, it is the slowest-focusing lens that I have by a substantial margin. I shoot primarily landscapes, and in comparing it with my other lenses, it isn't at all impressive. Shooting the same scene, tripod-mounted and at F8 on all the lenses, it is marginally sharper than my DFA 28-105 at around 70mm, but on the low end it is very comparable. It is substantially softer than my FA 31 and 77 Limiteds at similar focal lengths despite them being "film era" lenses - I wouldn't have expected the primes to have THAT much of an edge.
I'd be interested in other people's impressions - this isn't at all what I expected from the reviews for this lens.

I don't know if it will help the OP or not, but I spent a good deal of time with my camera this weekend and found out what seems to be going on (or at least a work-around). For whatever reason, the focal point is substantially below the center of the target in the viewfinder. I found that if I pressed the shutter release half-way when lower centerline of the box surrounding the circle was in line with what I wanted to focus on, the focus would lock very consistently.
Strange.

Yes, that is why I typically use the point focusing area and try and focus on either a barren rock outcropping adjacent to the snow line, or the break point between the mountain and the sky behind it. The thing that I find curious is that this method worked very consistently with the K-3.

I'm having a similar problem with my K-1 and FA-77 lens. It works great in Live View, but through the viewfinder on a white background (Mt. Shasta has fresh snow), it won't lock in. I've tried several focusing area settings and it has no impact. Sometimes it will lock after a couple of attempts, and other times it simply refuses to lock in. As soon as I try and focus on trees or any other heavily broken background, it works fine. It seems to be related to a difference between phase detection AF and contrast detection AF, but it was never an issue with my K-3 and the same lens.

Actually, I've owned a K-5IIs and a K-3 for several years. With my older models, there is a slight perception of something sliding inside them when they are moved aggressively. My new K-1, on the other hand, makes a very noticeable clunk when it is merely turned over to access the battery compartment - there is a very significant difference in both the movement necessary to cause the sound and in the volume of the sound.
I plan on shooting the hell out of it while still under Adorama's return period, but I had planned on doing that anyway!
Thanks again for everyone's input.

Thank you!
Nope, haven't gotten that far. I was just unpacking it.
Thanks for the quick replies. It was less than reassuring to hear immediately upon removing it from the box!

This doesn't even seem like it should be a question, but here goes....
My new K-1 just arrived today. While I was turning it over to examine the new controls, I noticed a perceptible "clunk". I gave it a gentle shake - clunk, clunk. I installed a battery and a lens on the off chance that something related could be causing it. Clunk. It sounds as though a large internal component never got screwed into place. It powers up normally, focuses, etc., but the language selection screen comes up every time it is powered up. Most interestingly, the clunk is there after installing a lens, but after it focuses for the first time, the clunk goes away. Remove the lens, the clunk returns.
Anybody had this issue? Neither my K-3 or my K-5IIs do anything similar and it has me a little concerned about Ricoh's QC......

The OEM copies of SilkyPix are sharply limited in comparison to the full version.

Perhaps it is due to SilkyPix not having a profile yet for the K3 II?
I have version 6.1.20.0 and occasionally use it for both raw & jpg for my K3 and K5 IIs (as well as a Panasonic LX7 and a couple of Fuji Superzooms), and it works on both formats without issue.

Thanks for the input, guys.
UncleVanya, I have a DA15 too. It's a great lens, but very specific in it's application. I find that I am frequently taking consecutive shots from 15mm up to 55-65mm, and quickly got tired of swapping lenses. The fact that I often go that long works against the 16-50, but I was impressed enough with many of the pictures that I've seen taken with it that I've been trying to convince myself that it would be fine.
SpecialK, I have looked at many of the pictures for both lenses, and read every review that I could find..... They seem close enough to me that I could go either way, hence this thread.
Jatrax - I appreciate you relating your experience, you've neatly encapsulated my dilemma. For me, I think that the 85mm is the critical difference. The 16-50 images seem to have a slight edge, and the f/2.8 would be great, but the lenses seem close enough that the extra length would be tie breaker.
Thanks again, it's been a help.

I know that this has been beat around pretty thoroughly, but I'm hoping to get the critical bit of input to knock me off the fence.
I shoot primarily landscapes, but would like enough flexibility for general usage. I have several of the prime Limiteds, but usually have what seems to be a pretty good copy of the 18-135 mounted. I would like a little better IQ, a bit more width, and a little less distortion at the wide end. A little more distance than the 16-50 would give would be great, but it is a marginal need. The fixed 2.8 has a lot of appeal, but in reality it really isn't necessary for the majority of what I do. The SDM failures are worrisome. Back and forth.....
This week I'm leaning toward the 16-85. Any experiences with the lenses that would help me decide would be greatly appreciated!

I've never bought any camera gear from Crutchfield, but I've purchased stereo equipment from them for around 30 years. Excellent company to deal with, probably one of the best in that genre, and I would assume the same would hold true for camera equipment.

Turns out it was too good of a price to be true. I just got an email from AV House stating that their supplier had told them that they had the lens in stock, but it has been discontinued and is no longer available. Rubbish.
They've canceled the order and refunded the money.
