Having owned the tamron for four years i can say the tamron has shockingly bad build quality with the front element continuously coming lose and the poor focussing performance too with regular hunting under low life.
Since having the 16-50mm which I bought used the build quality is excellent and the focussing speed is accurate and fast on my k-5 mkii, mki and the k-01. The rendering if this lens is head and shoulders above the tamron.

Sunsets wont need accurate focus. I have shot low light concerts with the k-5 and whilst it works you may find the k-30 better, particularly around camp fires.

I did that for four years and since owning the 16-50 I now regret those four years, its an excellent piece of glass.

Very little
Decrease whites
Decrease blacks
Bit of sharpening
Bit of noise reduction all in lr4.4
The crowd shot was iso 3200 at f/4 for a bit of depth
I keep hearing this lens sucks....

But then focus will be slower than the 16-50mm not only because of the narrower aperture but also the longer focal reach will cause a longer focal throw. There will also be the wider depth of field the f/4 creates to which will limit creativity.

But the 16-85 wont be 2.8 will it? In order to be 2.8 constAnt the front element would have to be around 112mm wide...
Pentax recently fixed the SDM issues the other issues corner softness doesnt reslly affect many images and the new improved focus of the k-5 mkii and k-30 certainly alleviate any softness issues...

Yes I agree this lens sucks bg time, soft at 2.8, flares badly, always worrying about sdm issues etc.
No I dont not really, its my favourite lens and runs rings around the Tamron 17-50mm and I owned one of those for four years!
It earns me money and everyone I photograph with it loves the images from it.
Under extreme conditions, yeah it works well, soft at 2.8? No its sharper than turkish shavers razor blade.. |

Finally got to shoot a gig with my k-5 mkii and DA* 16-50mm combination. Wow what can I say, really extreme lighting conditions, tons of backlighting, nice spot on lead singer.
The gear well it was fantastic, I love this combo so much.

I know a lot. Photojournslist who cover their gear in gaffer tape for a number of reasons.
1 protection from scratches etc, most photo journalist dont keep bodies for long needing the latest and fastest so protecting the assest is key.
2 black keeps the camera inconspicuous, there are times you dont want the subject to spot you and camera branding can catch the eye.
3 some photojournalist dont want their competition to know what they are shooting with.
4 some photojournalist refuse to endorse a camera brand sithout being sponsored so tape up the logo.
5 finally photojournalist wannabes always ask what gear we're using and question our choices, which detracts from work & generally ends up turning into a gear argument.
