This is a 37 second exposure taken during sunset in Pismo Beach, CA. As the sun set I did light painting to create this image with the luminous reflection in the pool of water.

:D LOL you are NOT ALONE. About six months ago I bought the V6II after I saw a YouTube video by a photographer who got Profoto B1's to do HSS with the Pentax. His 'trick' was to select the Nikon flash on the Cactus as the flash unit. I was so damn excited, but alas it didn't work on the Godox line of strobes. So I returned it. I'm just so happy that I now have HSS with the strobes I find work so well for me.

Ah great minds think alike....yes I tried the XT16 both with and without corresponding USB 2.4ghz receivers and no go for HSS. Not sure why either. FYI the XT16 WILL control the AD200 and the AD600. But not for HSS with Pentax. But nonetheless I'm just thrilled to be able to have HSS that has no banding with strobes I've switched to for my other work. I found that Priolite has linked to my early review of their MBX1000 Hotsync. I don't have the heart to tell them I'm selling those units.....LOL

Yes of course if manufacturers collaborated it would be great. The reality is Pentax is a VERY SMALL part of the camera market and it makes little business sense for Godox to develop for Pentax. But with companies like Cactus producing products which integrate triggers/flashes we are all in luck. As I explain in my article that ability with Pentax cameras and the Godox strobe eco system is NOW, so that's a great thing in my view. ALL options for Godox are NOW open to us.

I was very happy to hear and try the new Ricoh plug in for Lightroom tethering. I'm disappointed that the plug in does not give one an option of writing to the internal cards in addition to a computer. Ricoh if you read this thread please include that option in future releases. Thanks.

I was commissioned to photograph the staff at Highbridge Arms in San Francisco on the second to last day of operation. I used the 645Z and two studio strobes to create the portraits.

I'm happy to hear that. I guess my frustration is it seems very few of those who have web links to their images make it easy to access. As an example photolady95, your weblink is not in your profile. There are many times I want to see what a user shoots. It appears very very few people link their sites to their profiles here.

I have photographed all of my life, first in film/developing/taking and then had a long lay off to work in the corporate world for over 30 years. Finance, game development, energy, retail, law enforcement and a few more. Picked up photography in the early digital age to take shots of my kids. Began to 'moonlight' shooting theatrical performances to pay for gear. Got laid off and made the decision to 'man up' and pursue a photographic career full time. Been doing it now for five years, no spouse with a day job and benefits, no safety net. I will say that you commented about starting off just out of high school. Some of my pro friends did that. But there is an advantage to started off 'old' with tons of biz experience behind you. What most people struggle with is the small business side of photography. After all it's really just a small business. Most have no idea how to do business development or how to network in business when you're on the 'outside' which is very different than networking inside a company. Some of the same skills translate. Yes there's no direct deposit, PTO, sick days, etc. It's certainly not all milk and honey, but instead of having to deal with one really horrible boss every day if there is a client that I'm not particularly enamored with I only deal with them occasionally. And if I tire of them I simply look over my book of business, decide if the income they provide is material and make a decision. When they call for sessions I always seem to be booke... This should never be a habit but my view is if I want to buy 'stuff' and make 'money' I'd stick to the corporate world.
It's not easy, but I believe if you really want to try something at some point in your life you should. Most folks 'talk' about wanting to be their own boss, yet few do it or succeed at doing so. I will say that I love my job and it helps immensely to love what I do and the clients I work with. There's more opportunity than you know in photography. The cost of entry is: it's expected that you shoot great to excellent, your creative skills are excellent, you know how to light for the mood wanted, you are consistent, your fees present a good value, not cheap a good value. You're easy to work with. I imagine it's difficult to survive in the Family portrait space simply because your client base may only repeat once a year on average. A great wedding shooter makes a very good living provided their skills are excellent and i'm not just referring to their shots. In the commercial space where I live clients depend upon the imagery to sell/promote their products or services, so recurring business is built into that model. But be aware that you're only as good as your last session.
There are so many more elements in the pro world than just the shot. It's all about if you can run a small business successfully. I admire the work of many non pros, but it does not mean they would do well in the pro world just because of the other things involved. But I don't believe starting at any specific age makes much of a difference. Do I wish I'd started younger making a living at this? Nope because of the biz experience I was able to amass.

Thank you. My intent writing the article is to paint a realistic picture of what my work world is like. Not everyone has the same circumstances, but talking to most working pros we sometimes discuss gear but almost always speak about our common situations, frustrations and how we resolve them. I suggest you read Greg Heisler's book "50 Portraits" Not only are his stories funny and real but how he has approached jobs is invaluable.

On a PC it take 2-3 seconds as well and I don't believe it is the IT2 software. If you watch your camera without any tethering you'll notice that it takes about that same amount of time to view a just shot image on the LCD screen. I believe it's a function of how the camera is processing the shot, not IT2.

Yours is perhaps the most poignant response I've read here. And for anyone who doesn't believe 'who you know' is part of advancing yourself in any profession you may be in denial. Part of being a pro is putting oneself out there, networking with others who can offer opportunities for work. I'm often shocked at how naive we all can be when it comes to our work and how one person's work may advance over another's. And yes I seldom see people putting their work out there. It's too much of a risk. Look through any forum about any subject and you'll see a huge percentage of people who can go back an forth over facts and figures. But showing one's work, having anyone sharp shoot what you've created? Heaven forbid. I seldom give a second thought to any poster whose opinion is not backed up by a body of work. Sure they may very well be technically brilliant with empirical facts, but it doesn't mean a thing if what someone knows can't be put into practice for a REAL SHOT, not those test shots which seem to overflow all forums. So many of us avoid forums, but a few of us have decided to give them a try again, to HELP people. But it's certainly not a pro's job to 'teach' it's something we do as a courtesy to others. But when it becomes more about cutting down someone or showing how much you KNOW well then it's just so easy to NOT offer help and go back to creating art/concepts. Rant over.

Thanks for your experience with the Cactus v6 as I had considered trying one, but based upon your experience I'll hold off. As much as I'd love to figure out how to achieve HSS with the Z simply because I LOVE the feel of MF, I'll have to stick with the Canon or Fuji for now. I too am waiting for some modern LS lenses. Right now my best bet for outdoor ambient knock down is to use my Rovelite 600 with a variable ND filter. But it doesn't resolve high movement like dance in high ambient conditions. I need to take my own advice and use the right tool for the right job, so the Z remains in studio...for now.

Although I continue in an attempt to find a way to allow the 645Z to perform HSS with any of the 360s, the AD360 is a remarkable strobe for ultra portable use. You can find my article here.
