I only have a few photos from 2014 since I got my little q7 christmas morning. I snapped this one early one snowy morning. It was very peaceful but a cold, gray day.

As an update - I want to say thanks again to everyone. We did get her the 18-135wr and I had some great luck on craigslist - picked up a smc-m 50 1.4, smc-m 35 2.8 and a vivitar 135mm close focusing all in a lot with a me film body and all in excellent condition. We wanted to keep our total cash budget in the $500-$600 range and we just managed to stay under $600 in the end but I think the extra money was well spent. $300 for the k-50 body, $250 for the 18-135 wr (cashed in credit card points to bring the price down), and $40! for the lot of lenses plus film camera on craigslist. I think she is really set for quite a while, she has some great primes to learn with including a great lens for her bug shots and I wouldn't have thought to check craigslist without the suggestions from everyone here. Plus she has expressed some interest in shooting film as well so now she has a film camera to play around with too.

Wow, thanks everyone for the advice. I should have mentioned I was considering the 35mm because she loves to take macro shots - bugs, frost on grass, old bricks etc :) So I thought that would be a lense that would be fun for her. She is also really good at portraits - she has taken some amazing shots of her younger sister and I selfishly want to encourage that :). But I think the points about a more versatile lens being a better place to start are good ones. I decided against the 18-55 mainly because I think shewill outgrow it very quickly. It is a lot cheaper, but I hate buying something that I know won't be useful for long. I think the 18-135 will last a lot longer for her. So I will probably go for that one as long as I can get it for a good price. The 35mm will be a great birthday present in a few months as well. And I will check ebay and our local Craigslist for some reasonably priced legacy lenses. Maybe I can find her a few to experiment with and have fun. Thanks again everyone - I appreciate your changing my mind.

I've been looking for an affordable option for a first dslr for my 16yr old as a xmas present and just took advantage of the pentax webstore sale to get her the white k-50 for $300. I'm now trying to decide which lense to buy for it. I originally planned on getting her the two inexpensive primes - 50mm & 35mm since they are on sale for a good price at the moment and I can get them from amazon (we have about $100 in amazon gift cards we can put towards the purchase). This would only cost us about $180 for both which is why I decided against the kit originally. Another option which would save us a bit of money is to just get one of these lenses to start out - that would be a great thing for our budget, but which one should I go with if I decided on this option. Now I am wondering if we shouldn't go for the 18-135mm wr zoom instead so that she can have a complete wr set up. This option would cost a bit more then both primes though. She is very artistic and has some experience with dslr - my aunt her lent her a camera at her daughters wedding this summer as well as a few other times and she has taken some really great shots. She definitely has a good eye and I think she would appreciate the extra sharpness of the prime lenses vs the zoom, but I like the versatility of the zoom as her first lens. She does have a birthday coming up in april, so we can get her an extra lens or two at that point as well, but I'm afraid the prices will be higher at that point as well. I would love any advice on this.
thanks
