I love my *ist DS! It reminds me of my first DSLR, a K1000 super I never should have sold. I still find the 1-control-wheel interface very intuitive. Plus, I use an accessory TTL flash sometimes, no problems, and I have a Canon matte focus screen in there instead of the original. It is GREAT for manual focus, especially fast lenses. Here's one with a Tokina 90mm macro:

Better to buy Pentax 77mm or 85mm* ???

Looking at your samples there, it is hard to believe you need a new lens. :-) Lovely work!

I find the 77 to be the best lens I own, for pictures of people. I've never used the 85, though.

I took out my FA 43 on a Vivitar 2X macro TC, and got some great colors. Not perfect pictures, but I like 'em.

40mm XS - Lens Hood ?

I put on a 27 --> 37 mm step up ring, and then a 37 --> 30.5 mm step down ring. This approximates the dimensions of the DA40 limited hood, and allows me to use my little 30.5mm circular polarizer I bought for that lens, and then used on the FA43 (with a 49--37 step down, then the 37--30.5). It is a little strange looking, but it doesn't seem to cause any harm.

Is it just me or is the F 35-70 an insanely over rated lens?

For $25 I'd get the 35-70/4 in heartbeat. The 35-105 is pretty big for toting around.

28 mm vs 21 / 20-40 questions

My experience with the DA 20-40 vs. the 21 has been similar to what photogem describes. I no longer own a 21, the DA 20-40 is quite good at that range. Both are better than the FA28, in my experience.

I am under the impression that the "lens sample photo archive" is a distinct entity from the various lens clubs. Some of the information might be redundant, even some of the pictures, but there is still a value to having an entry in the archive as it is currently organized.

Actually it looks quite good in color, too, but I very slightly prefer the BW treatment.

Just Got My Sigma 30mm F1.4 Art Today

It's a very fine lens, I think. The corners may not be the greatest, but in a large spot over the center it does very well. Even wide open. Fringing happens wide open, but is largely gone stopped down a click or two; the FA 31 has similar issues. And its size makes it much more appealing for me than the Sigma 35. Focusing is a trick, but that is true of every fast lens I have ever known. I think the OP will likely enjoy the lens a lot.

Convince me my LBA is irrational

I wouldn't call the desire for either of those two lenses irrational. Both will give you somewhat better IQ than the 18-55, in all likelihood, and they are tiny and good for walking around. The 15 is significantly wider than your current 18-55, although I find that works for certain shots and not others. With a prime lens over a zoom you may have framing issues, and likely more lens switching. Traveling with a zoom is not a bad way to go, stopped down and with good technique you can still take very nice pictures, as you have already found, and there is more on-the-fly flexibility.

When I went to Yellowstone a few years ago on a similar family trip, I took my A 16mm fish eye, my 43, a 75-300 and an 18-55 WR. I used the 18-55 most, and the 43 for some people pictures, the 75-300 for some wildlife shots, and almost never used the 16mm. My favorite landscape shots from that trip were all with the 18-55. Your experience may be different, but I suspect you could get by just fine with the 18-55, 35 and 55-300.

I currently have the Sigma 30/1.4 ART, and while it is very nice, it doesn't match the rendering of the FA 31 I used to have. Might have to swap back. Although I also have a Zeiss 28/2, and that lens has its own remarkable strengths. Not AF, though.

This lens is also banded as a Vivitar 90mm f/2.5 macro, possibly Series 1? It only magnifies to 1:2 without the matched adapter, which I sadly lack. Still, it is a fantastic lens for macro and anything else doable at 90mm, really. Nicknamed the "Bokina, and with good reason.

I got one early on, hand-held with a Tokina 500mm mirror. Later it got so dim, all I could get was equal to what Steve already posted.

DA 40, 20-40 or DA 70 ?

I agree with this completely. For shooting kids indoors, a decent bounce/swivel flash plus an average zoom will get more keepers than even the fastest prime; even if you have a fast enough shutter speed to stop the kid's constant movement, they wander right out of the DOF. Shooting at F/8 with the flash freezing movement is much nicer.
