For APC format definitely the DA 16-85mm very good image quality and covers the focal range for 80% of the photos I take.

Agree the K3 is a great camera, and I as well would love to upgrade to the K-3iii, but the price is just to high at this time.

I always say buy the best processor, the most memory and the biggest hard drive you can afford. Spending a little more on the front end may will likely get you and extra few years of service life out of the computer.

Since owning the KP I find I keep my DA* 16-50 on it a lot. I like the bigger range than the DA 20-40 when carrying only one lens. I also like having the F2.8 for entire zoom range.

As other have suggested if I am trying to travel as light as possible then I take the 18-135 with the 15mm limited. No camera bag needed for this combo I just put the 15mm in my pocket. If I want to carry the minimal set up with the greatest coverage and use a small bag, I take the 16-85 and 55-300 PLM.

I am good with custom in camera corrections for the DFA if it keeps the lens smaller and lighter.

Just got a DFA 150-450. What a beast of a lens. The optical quality is great. Here is one of my first photos with it. A wild turkey in my backyard. RAW file processed in DXO Photolab. Some croping and touch up in Photoshop Elements 2109.

Here is one of my first photos with a it. A portrait of a wild turkey in my backyard. Take from about 30 feet away. Processed from the RAW file with DXO Photolab 4and cropped with some minor adjustments in Photoshop Elements 2019. I really like the RAW processing in DXO. I was in Costa Rica 5 years ago. I also had a K-3 with both a screw drive version of the Pentax 55-300 and a DA 300 mm with the 1.4x Pentax teleconverter. I have to say for much of the wildlife including birds you are in the forest with poor lighting so the the I almost never used the 55-300. It had a hard time getting good focus. You really need the 420mm that you get with DA 300 mm with the teleconverter at wide open or close to wide open. I used my K-3 with telephoto for all the wildlife photos. I had a Canon G1xii with me that I used for closer up photos and landscapes, so I would not have to stop and change lenses. Also we spent a lot of time in and around the water where I used my Pentax WG-3, Here is a link to some photos on Flickr that shows he use of all the equipment above. Costa Rica April 2016 | Flickr |

Just got a KP with battery grip and the free flash from Adorama. It arrived on Thursday and here is link to my first photos. Taken with the 55-300 PLM. Pentax KP Bird First Photos January 2021 | Flickr
I know these are not the most exotic birds, but we see them a lot in New England in the winter.
It will take some getting used to the KP's new controls and figuring out how to customize it. First thing I did was set Fx1 to depth of field preview. It seems to focus better than my K3 especially with the 55-300 PLM.
