Should I take my 31mm ltd to Costa Rica?

Hi. I have lived in Costa Rica for a couple of years now, using Pentax equipment. Some of my lenses are WR and some are not but I've not had any problems. I don't know where you will be going but it is now the dry season in the Central Valley, near San Jose. It is raining some on the Caribbean side, but just take the usual precautions with your equipment and you won't have any problems. I usually carry my lenses inside small padded cases and inside my backpack. Pura vida!

I once used ScanCafe - Photo Scanning, Negative Scanning, Slide Scanning, Video Transfer, Photo Restoration for scanning many old family photos. Excellent results at a low price.

Wide Angle Prime for FF

I recently was in the market for a wide angle lens for my K-1, and I wanted one that could take polarizer or ND filter for some landscapes. I bought the Pentax-A 20mm f2.8 on ebay from a reputable seller from Japan. It is a superb manual focus lens and just the right focal length for the landscapes that I want. I don't really need auto focus for landscapes. It is a tiny thing and a pleasure to work with. There are usually several on ebay. I use it now in Costa Rica for the great landscape opportunities here. Highly recommended!

Looking for a hiking bag

I live in Costa Rica and do a lot of hiking photography through the national parks. I use a Lowepro 16L AW. A friend uses a similar Lowepro but slightly bigger (22L AW?). I generally carry a K-3, my DA 300, and a wide angle zoom. Sometimes I take my Tamron macro. If I also take my DA 50-135 + 1.4 TC, I carry it in a padded Lowepro bag on my belt. The Lowepro bag has a built-in compartment for a rain cover. Sometimes I also carry things in a Seal Line waist pack. A water bottle will fit in the side elastic pouch or in the waist pack. Sometimes I use a Befree travel tripod and it goes in the other side elastic pouch. Often I don't bring it or my flash. Of course there is a trade-off between the weight on your back and the equipment you carry, and many of the parks have trails that go uphill, so travel light. You'll be here at the end of the rainy season, but the rains come mostly in the afternoons and you can usually avoid them. The parts are beautifully protected, very secure and very safe and you won't have a theft problem. Good luck and bienvenidos a Costa Rica!

I've been in Costa Rica on a photo tour with a professional nature photographer. He also uses only 4GB cards, for the same reason as mentioned in the previous post.

I do a lot of bird photography with my K3. This lens plus the TC is my "go to" setup. It's an excellent lens and the TC does not seem to cause any loss of quality. In fact I am in Costa Rica right now with this combination and the TC stays on the lens. My heavy Sigma 500 f4.5 is a fine lens, but it stays in my closet when I travel.

The manual for this flash is confusing and offers very little explanation about how to set up. Maybe they have improved it but this was very helpful:

Equipment for Costa Rica

I am facing the same dilemma as I am going to CR for the entire summer (rainy season), but I have used Pentax equipment for a long time. have realized that choices have to be made because of luggage restrictions and practicality. I'm bringing two bodies, a K-3 and a Kiis. For the long lens, I'll use a 300DA and the 1.4 TC. The TC work flawlessly with this lens. I'll also bring my 200DA which I think is a great lens. For macro, I'll bring my Tamron 90 f2.8. It's a good one but not WR. Wide angle: Sigma 10-20 or Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or both. The 50-135 would be a good choice (also works with the 1.4TC) but mine died an untimely death and it's staying home. I'll have a Manfotto Befree travel tripod which adequately holds my 300DA and camera. Bring a polarizing filter and a graduated neutral density filter for landscapes and sunrises/sunsets. Staying at home: Sigma 500 f4.5 and my large Manfrotto tripod. You might consider the Pentax 60-250 + 1.4 TC. I wish that I had all WR equipment but my budget won't allow it so I'll make do with what I have. You''l love CR, great place for photography and wonderful, helpful people. Hope this helps.

60-250

I have the 50-135, DA200, DA300 and the 1.4 TC that I use on all of them at times. Several months ago, I ordered the 60-250 (not sure why) and tried it on my K-3 for a few days. It is a fine lens and does everything that it is supposed to do, but I decided that I was not getting any "bang for my buck" over what I already had. Granted, with that lens, I don't have to change lenses as often, but the three lenses that I mentioned are excellent lenses and fit my usage very well. The 60-250 is a little big lens and I eventually returned. Don't get me wrong, it is a very high quality lens but didn't fit what I needed. BTW, I had the Sigma 100-300 several years ago and sold it because it was a monster of a lens and I kept finding excuses to leave it at home.

Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM APO - Thoughts?

I have a K-3 and and now have the Pentax 50-135. I used to have the Sigma 50-150 and it was a fine lens but its weight is almost double the weight of the Pentax. I love the 50-135 and it is one of my sharpest and most useful lenses. I have the new Pentax 1.4 teleconverter which makes the lens the equivalent of a 70-189 with no loss of image quality. I'm unsure if the TC would work with the Sigma. The Sigma is no longer in production so you may consider that. The main reason for my change was the weight. I'm very happy with the image quality of the Pentax, which is outstanding.
