I would continue to use it and assemble a custom dry box for storage. Make the most of it for as long as possible. I don't think you will be able to sell it unless someone needs spare parts for repairing another lens.

After all these years we can only speculate, SDM is well in the past now, like high-end DA * lenses. For some time DFA lenses will be the priority.

True, not a Pentax only issue, but the limited lenses should have tighter tolerances (they are prime also not zoom lenses except one). Lemons are a part of life, but something has to be done to improve the quality of premium lines.
Sigma uses their Foveon sensor for measurements or so they say... the thing is premium lenses are expected to be perfect, I know tranportation has a lot to do with the end user experience both in lenses and in hard disk drivers. The packaging of lenses is not adequete for all manufactorers in my view.
The LensRental "OLAF" is something that service centers should have, the cost of equipent has skyrocketed and people's expectations along with the prices.
FUD is part of reviewing and Pentax has suffered a lot, during the digital period and the movement of production lines outside of Japan.
I am sure that not all SDM lenses were problematic but the whole issue influenced my purchases to an extent. Nikon had a lot of problems lately but the brand name is still going strong.
For me IBIS is the reason I chose Pentax for digital and I will stick to the brand, it makes more sense economically.
But I will aknowledge that sometimes the grass is greener on the other side. And sometimes is greener on our side.

High quality components.
Yet some batches of Pentax lenses have issues with quality control, de-centering.

The real question. Why we compare apples to oranges?
When a refresh of the 60-250 f/4 is coming out? Only a DFA 70-200 f/4 ?
We gotta know. :D

On principle you are right.
In practice even a broken analog watch shows the correct hour two times a day, on the matter of max magnification on a tight budget they come close enough to the truth in this case.
That been said I would love to have money and space to burn and get a K-1 with a 150-450mm this day.
I am sure I would get even more weird looks than I get with a 55-300 and a K-30 but who cares. :D

After 300mm equivalent IBIS becomes a problem for me, it takes some effort to aim properly at medium short distances because of the lack of optical stabilization. :D I don't think Pentax is the best option for birders.
Aside from the Canon 400mm f/5.6 which remain the best buck for bang lens in this category, you can have access to rented super telephoto lenses way easier by going with a Nikon or Canon.
With this in mind I find it a little difficult to see Pentax introducing longer lenses than the 150-450mm, the Pentax 560mm is a bit of an oddity. ---------- Post added 10-14-16 at 04:56 PM ----------
The thing is you have to take into account the technique needed for longer than 300mm focal length. Some lenses are too much actually for most people to handle. So they have a point when they talk about real world situations.
With an APS-c camera I would not dream to use something more than a 400mm without a tripod.

The burden of proving something goes the claimer.
I can give you some links about the things I claimed. Can you do the same?

I am sure if Pentax intoduced something like the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM Lens at around 7000$ (like the canon), people would still compare it to the Sigma 150-600 contemporary, because... Pentax. :D
On a more serious note, I saw the lenstip review of the Sigma 150-600 sports versus contemporary and it is significantly better and 50% heavier. Probably Sigma Sports version is more lens for the money than Pentax 150-450, I am not so sure about the contemporary version. It looks kind of average.

I would like to see a comparison between the 600mm zoom lenses and the 450mm Pentax, on the same target at different distances. Nikon D810 has the same sensor as Pentax K-1 so we can have a fair comparison.

The 33mm vs 24mm on the smaller side of the picture is what makes the difference.
It's a 37.5% difference besides the aesthetics of the 4/3 aspect ratio and a more usable ratio for vertical photos. Your mileage may vary here.
For me is more meaningful difference than the difference of 35mm and aps-c which is just a differnce in size. My 2cents.

I do not think that Nikon users are in the same buyers class as the people buing 645Z.
First most of them don't get the 4:3 aspect ratio.
Second traditionally the 35mm is a convenience thing, without the shooting discipline required they will not realise the added value the 645Z has over D810.

Now I feel envious. But the DFA 100mm macro will be my only love. Its cheaper that way. :D
I had no luck with infra red so far, so I will stick with visible range.
