Yes. I live in Borneo, the world's third-largest island. I know the other two Pentax users on the island personally, and we all have to send out stuff to Kuala Lumpur in West Malaysia for repairs. New purchases can only be made online, as no retailer carries Pentax.
Before Borneo, I lived in Taiwan for 22 years. Taipei has an entire street full of nothing but camera stores. Two of them carry Pentax.
But you know what? I kind of like that feeling. My dad shot Hasselblad in the 60s and got stared at everywhere he went. Now it's my turn :-))

Hi all,
I live in Borneo and recently bought the Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm. I love the close-up function which allows me to shoot small flora and fauna, such as snakes, geckos, and the enormous variety of crazy bugs around here.
Since I acquired the lens it I've been using it primarily to photograph tropical pitcher plants, genus Nepenthes These are the largest carnivorous plants on Earth and lend themselves well to this sort of photography. Now I'll only have to learn how to use the lens ... N. ampullaria
Various N. rafflesiana
N. gracilis N. x kuchingensis N. mirabilis hybrid N. hirsuta
In fact, the lens does anything from rainforest trees to tiny roadside flowers. I'm completely in love with it :-) |

Lately a lot of my older pix are "split" somewhere along the horizontal plane like in this picture here. I think my HDD is going south, could that be the reason? I shoot RAW, convert to JPG with Bibble Lite, and view in ACDSee. No other image editing software involved.
Anybody know of a program that can fix image corruptions of this sort?
Thanks very much in advance!

Thanks for all the answers and concerns about critter eye health (which I'm also trying to maintain)!
I've heard that ring flashes are not an option, as they cause ring-shaped lights in the animals' eyes. Is that a fact? If not, I'll definitely look into that. If yes, I'm more thinking along the lines of two (or more) single flashes mounted onto the end of the lens.
What are your experiences?
Thanks!

Hi,
I've recently gotten heavily into night critter photography (mostly reptiles, amphibians, spiders) and have quickly come to the the point where I really would like to buy a nice twin or multi-flash kit that can be attached to the front of the lens, because the K10D's onboard flash is only good in very lucky circumstances.
I have absolutely no idea about lens-mounted flash kits, apart from the fact that all the members from my nature photo club use them - but none of them has a Pentax.
So, could you guys help me out with a few tips? It should be durable, as I expose the camera to a lot of dirt, heat and and tropical humidity.
Thanks very much in advance!!

Hi there,
I'm now in exactly the same situation as the original poster: I inherited a truckload of Hasselblad V-series gear (two 500 EL/M bodies and six lenses, ranging from wide-angle to 500 f/8 Tele-Tessar); and since I don't have the moolah for a digiback yet (sorry, complete film idiot here), but believe that those fantastic lenses need to be worked out regularly, I ordered a Zörkendörfer adapter for my K10D. It's bound to arrive next week, and I can't wait!
Of course, now I'm eager for any kind of information on what I'll be dealing with. So, desame.one, did you buy that adapter after all? Care to share your experience so far?
And what would I need to know about operating the Pentax/HB rig? I've found that you're supposed to shoot in aperture priority mode and use DOF preview to decide on how far to stop down the lens manually. Anything else? Will all three metering settings still be working and accurate? What's the "workflow" for taking a shot?
Thanks very much in advance for your answers!
Hans, still a total n00b after six months :o

Just to let you know how the story played out: I bout the SIGMA 105mm F2.8 EX DG and a Kenko ET set....and now I have so much magnification that I can't seem to find a small enough bug
Thanks again, everyone!

Hi everyone
again, thanks for all y'all's kind input! I've decided to drop the TC idea for now until I have a faster lens.
Cheers from Taiwan

Again, thanks very much for all the info! Now, I asked a few camera stores here in Taipei about which 1.4x TC to use for the combo K10D and the SIGMA 70-300mm, and was told there is no manufacturer that makes such a TC.
I find that a tad dubious...are any of you using this combo and a TC? If so, what TC is it?
Thanks again!

Thanks very much, everyone, for sharing your expertise! I've done some further research based on all y'all's suggestions, and now I'm down to , but undecided between the SIGMA 105mm F2.8 EX DG and the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di. Both are pretty solidly priced here in Taipei, and I guess I'll mosey on down to Camera Street (a little old street with about 40 shops selling cameras and other related equipment) and get a hands-on look on the weekend.
Thanks again!

Thanks very much, everyone, for your kind replies! I'll grab these ideas and go google a bit (remember the days we actually went to a camera store instead?)

Hi everyone,
I just bought my first DSRL, a Pentax K10D, as well as a SIGMA 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 DG APO.
Which x1.4 - x2 teleconverter would you recommend for this lens/camera combination?
Thank you very much in advance for your kind replies!

Hi and thank you for your quick reply!
I realize that a macro lens will be more expensive, but I'm willing to take that plunge.
I'm quite happy with the Sigma lens - are there any good Sigma macro lenses fit for the K10D?
Thanks again!

Hi everyone,
I just bought my first DSRL, a Pentax K10D, as well as a SIGMA 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 DG APO.
Since I love to photograph insects and mosses (don't ask :-) ), I'd now like to know what equipment would allow me to get magnifications up to 4:1.
I've perused many a photo instruction book, including Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide", and have come to the conclusion that either of the two following solutions may be best:
1. A dedicated 150 mm (or 100 mm?) macro lens. Which ones are best one for the K10D?
2. A 2-element diopter. Which ones are best one for the Sigma lens?
Thank you very much in advance for your kind replies!
Cheers
