Hello all,
sorry for taking so long to react.
I can't seem to find time to devote to photography:-(
I decided to not use any of the older lenses until I can properly assess them. I was fortunate enough to have the camera repaired in warranty, so all went well.

I am not sure that if this is a knows issue that it would only affect the K-30 and 50. I specifically asked the serviceman if the aperture mechanism on this midrange Pentax is any weaker than that of the higher models. He mentioned that they share the same mechanism...

Hi,
after a recent breakdown of my one year old K50, I would like ask others here on their opinion.
The camera started acting weirdly after about half a year of light usage. It seemed that the mirror would lock up from time to time (albeit not very often).
The camera couldn't focus at all and the viewfinder was very dim. Strangely, live view seemed ok.
As it usually happend with a low battery I suspected that that was the issue. But the last time the battery was full and no matter what I did, the camera would not function and even hang and not react to anything (except battery removal;-)
I got it repaired. Service said that the aperture mechanism got broken and confused the electronics. As I have two older lenses I use on the body I suspected they might be to blame and tried to compare aperture pin behaviour on those lenses to my kit 18-135:
The Pentax-A 1.4 aperture is not as easygoing (I'd say maybe 20 % harder) and would not spring back as quickly.
The Pentax-K (not KA) adapted Tamron 19H 70-210 adaptall aperture returns quickly but is about twice as hard to operate than the new kit lens.
The serviceman saw those lenses as well and he said that he wouldn't be operating either of those on the camera and that the broken aperture mechanism is not something common in the Pentax range and that the lenses might have been the cause.
I can't tell you how dissapointing his word were to me as you can imagine how hard it was to find good copies of those old gems for a reasonable price.
What about your old lenses and their aperture pins, are they stiffer than the new digital lenses? Do you think that I just had bad luck with my K50 or did my older lenses really break the body aperture?

Hello all,
my name is Jaroslav and I am from the Czech Republic. I've always enjoyed taking pictures with my dad's film compact on family vacations. The kick to buy mi first "serious" camera came from a longer stay in Montreal, where I found my compact to be lacking in functionality and IQ. I needed something better to capture memories from a big trip accross Canada that was on my schedule back then.
I bough a used Samsung NX10 with the 18-55 kit lens for a very reasonable price after reading some very positive reviews. Later on I also acquired the well known Samsung 30mm f2 pancake, which is incredible given the IQ and size. I was also interested in Pentax back then but couldn't find anything suitable in my budget. I used to spend hours on these forums, specially in the Lenses review sections.
After getting a better job, I finally decided to jump in and get myself a brand new K50 with the 18-135 kit lens. Compared to the Samsung, I immediately felt the photographic history and knowledge that is turning the wheels inside the camera. It is not about the IQ or focusing speed but mainly about the feeling of "why can't you do that" that I commonly had with the Samsung which turned into "wow, I didn't know this was possible" that I enjoy having with the Pentax;-)
Unfortunately I don't have as much time devoted for photography as would like. My family has recently moved into an older house where there is a lot to do.
I am a big fan of open source so I run Linux on all my machines and use it in my photography workflow (mainly digikam and darktable). I also like hacking into things. One of my doings was to flash the NX10 with an NX11 firmware given the fact that the two cameras are almost the same and differ mainly in FW. Unfortunately, I am not the author of the hack;-) I just had the idea that it might be possible, did a quick google search and followed a guide...
