Okay, talk to me like I'm three years-old.
I'm not new to photography (dpreviewers of ol' might even remember me), but never bothered with portrait lighting until I acquired myself a baby. Now I'm trying to shoot a picture for the Christmas card and running a bit late.
I have a K-7, AF-540, and AF-500. I'm thinking that the 540 belongs on the camera and bounced off of the ceiling and the 500 can be a slave flash. I have a large reflector. Oh, and my idiot self can't even figure out how to get the 540 off of P-TTL.
I have things set up like this: [link], but I don't have enough natural light to pull off the kind of shutter speed I need. Babies are quick like ninjas. Twitchy, moody ninjas. Hence not being fond of P-TTL.
So how should I set up my lighting?

If you're looking for a $50 scanner, I'd recommended picking from the best of the used Canoscan 8400F lots on eBay. I bought one new quite a few years ago and it is still quite nice. That said, if I were buying today I'd totally spend the extra bucks for a new flatbed with film scan capabilities.

That is a little pricey, but if you want a perfect K-1000 and want to buy locally, it's not totally insane (unlike the Craigslister I saw recently who wanted a cool grand for a bunch of worn out old darkroom equipment). I might even be tempted if it were an Asahi model.

Lynchburg is a beautiful little city, but I can't claim it. I moved from Centreville to Blacksburg about 7 years ago after coming down to visit a friend, who was a student at Tech at the time. A couple of years later, I discovered Blacksburg's low rent counterpart (Christiansburg) and have been here since.

That makes me think that the 50/1.4 or even 77/1.8 would be nice. Hmm... the 31/1.8 and 77/1.8 would definitely fit into my purse.

Here's a belated welcome from the Virginia Tech-ish area. I grew up in Centreville, lived in Manassas for a bit (worked at Whetzel's Billards when I was a bit too young - LOL) and still get a kick out of how excited they sound about the name MANASSAS! on the Spanish radio station that took over WHFS.

I work in hospice care. I take people who bite, scratch, hit and throw things (and some quite good insults) at me and take care of them like they are the most precious thing God has ever put onto this planet in their time of suffering and need.
And I believe you have more patience than I do. You know. Just saying.

I found this article, titled "Darkroom as Recreation," a while back and really loved it: The Online Photographer: Darkroom as Recreation
Whenever anyone comments on the cost of film or the like, I usually just say that it is cheaper than therapy. Park of what I love about film is that I really have to have patience with it and that the patience pays off. Digital is great and there is a lot of room to explore different techniques with it, but it just doesn't feel as rewarding. As a way to produce images, digital is great. As a way to make me shutup and focus, well, that's just not something I can do when I process my images on the same machine that I use to play Bejeweled Blitz.

I'm going to be attending my husband's cousin's wedding in a couple of weeks and would like to bring along a camera, but not be obnoxious. She has planned things meticulously and I'm sure has picked out a wonderful photographer.
I'm wondering if toting along a small film camera would be less intrusive and might get me some more unique photos. I'm not even sure that I would want to take more than one lens.
Any thoughts? I can bring along the K-1000 with a M 50/1.4. The 31/1.8 would be nice, but might defeat the point of being low key. I could also just bring the Retina iiC (Classic Cameras profile: Mike Elek: Kodak Retina IIC). I'm kind of leaning towards that since it is so small and quiet.
The other options I have are all a bit big for the job - like the Pentax 6x7 and my Rollei.
It doesn't need to fit into a pocket - purses are both the bane and the luxury of being female.

Whenever I get tempted to buy a new body I ask myself if there is any one camera that I already own that I spend as much time as I would like shooting with. The answer is always so and it is obvious that what I need is more time, not more cameras. Then I pick up my barely used (by me - very well used before I picked it up) Honeywell and go for a walk.

Wow, I have not been here in quite a while. I thought that this new addition was the perfect excuse to stop back in.
A couple of weeks ago, I restarted my campaign for a dog. This round, my husband relented and I started browsing petfinder.com, researching breeds and making lists. When I first saw Isabelle, I didn't put her on the list.
I don't know exactly why, but she just didn't catch my eye. She looked big, scared, anxious. There were a ton of listings to sort through, and her picture didn't have any "oh my gosh, that is my dog!" to it.
I went back through later and she was added to the list, mostly because there were other dogs at the same shelter that I wanted to look at. My husband had also been advocating for her, though in a subtle when this dog chews up all of your clothes and pees on the floor, it was not my idea kind of way.
When I arrived, I found something much different than I had thought. She was about 10 pounds - big enough to hug, play with and grow into a medium sized dog. She was super playful, but not neurotic and calmed down immediately when I picked her up. All she wanted to do was cuddle and lick my nose.

Back seat? You can't be serious! (she has since gotten use to the idea - I have airbags that I cannot turn off in my terribly un-kid&dog-friendly car, so I had to be rather firm about it)
I have some cute pictures, but its really been a really stressful couple of days. When I first brought her home, the cat wanted to eat her. Seriously. Alright, this is the first picture of I have of this cat:
After a a little physical separation, then some supervised sharing of space, the cat apparently learned to curb his desire to eat the puppy whole because now they can cohabit with simple annoyance. I was really worried though that I had just turned out house into one of those places where every pet has to have its own room and they scratch through the doors because they're miserable.
Oh, and I found out during her vet check Friday and my sweet little Bella is not 3 or 4 months old, as advertised. She is -at very most- 8 weeks. She had been at the shelter for a couple of weeks already too, so she's had a pretty hard life so far. She doesn't gobble up food and doesn't growl when you take her treats so she has never been starved, but she hates her crate pretty badly. We are working very hard on house breaking, but it is a bit of a challenge. Honestly, as much as it breaks my heart to see her nursing in her sleep because she is so young, it is a bit of a relief to know that she is having so much trouble with house training because she has the blatter control of someone who didn't exist in her current form two months ago, not because there's a larger problem.
Oh, and as for what type of dog she is, I have no clue. She has an extremely strong herding instinct but that is all I know. I call her my grab bag puppy - who knows what the heck is in there.

I have two. One is Chinese - late vintage. I got it second hand in high school from my parents, who used it and its predecessor (stolen in '88) to document my childhood.
I picked up an Asahi model a couple of years ago with a 135/2.5 super cheap on fleaBay.
