Resetting Filename ?

I did try zooming out, as this is common behavior among the compact cameras as well, to display all the pictures in a thumbnail gallery style. However, that didn't give me a count of the total number of images. I cycled through all the information display options and none showed anything other than the file number, unless I'm missing it. Not a huge deal, I just like seeing how many pictures I've taken on a particular day/trip. The thumbnail gallery can give you a rough idea I suppose, just takes a little basic math. :) Thanks!

Edit: I just noticed there is what's called a Calendar Filmstrip Display, and that display does show the total number of images shot on a particular date, so that should work, sweet.

Thanks much! I can see how I missed that. Looks like a new folder is automatically created for each new date, which is fine, and if you don't have the File No. saved in memory, each new folder starts with file number 0001. It's doesn't specifically say so, but I have to assume that unlike the other saved memory items, the file number is only reset with the new folder creation, rather than with power off/on, which makes sense - otherwise you'd get filename conflicts.

Speaking of memory, I love how this camera is able to save all these items, most specifically, the drive mode and the location in the menu last visited. It frustrated me to no end in most (not all) of my compact cameras when the self timer would disable itself after every shot! It's so much faster to get around in the Pentax menu system than any other I've used.

Resetting Filename ?

Hi all. I've been really enjoying my new K-30 over the past week. However, I've poured through the manual and online and am not finding a way to do a couple things which all of my compact digicams were able to do:

1. Reset the filename to zero
2. Display the total number of images taken on the card in playback mode - preferably showing which picture you're currently viewing, as well. For example, 150/400.

Are these just not possible on the K-30? If not, what happens after image 9999? Does the filename add another digit, or does it go back to zero? I tried creating a new folder, thinking perhaps that would change things, but that just puts new images in the new folder starting after the last number in the previous folder. So if I were on image 1500 in folder 100, the next image would be 1501 in folder 101.

Thanks in advance!

Lights on the Water

Beautiful shots, regardless. It looks to me like you have ripples in the water on all those shots, which are going to seriously impede the mirroring clarity of the water. Do you have fish jumping or crazy night kayakers going by? Or is it perhaps windy? If I'm mistaken, I am at a loss to explain it. I agree with use of a tripod, but I wouldn't use any longer exposure than necessary to get the shot - just increases the chance of water movement, which will blur the reflection.

Welcome to the forum! I, too, have found the lens reviews on this site invaluable for hunting down used lens bargains to go with my new (to me) K-30. Some of the lenses I ordered have very few reviews, so I'll do my best to submit my own.

Welcome! Value was also a major factor in my decision to go with Pentax. It's amazing how much you get for the money with Pentax, whether you go new or used. The K-30 I just ordered will cost less than either of the last two compacts I have purchased - admittedly one a higher end (at the time) bridge superzoom, and the other an 'enthusiast' compact. Sure, once I add a few more lenses I'll be a little more, but not by that much, and it's so much more of a camera!

Welcome, Ed! I guess you have never had a white car? They stay cleaner looking way longer than a black car. :) Still, can't say as I've ever had a camera that even got dirty enough to really need cleaning on a regular basis, and I do a lot of hiking and camping with them. Between white and black, I'd go for white, but I do like to be different. My understanding is that the K-50 is more of a mid-level camera (K-X, K-R, and now K-500 below it). It's only the crazy low current pricing that makes it seem entry level, IMHO. Don't think you'd ever find an entry level camera from another maker with full weather sealing, which is one big reason I went with Pentax for my first DSLR, a K-30 I just ordered a few days ago. Can't wait! I don't have your lens budget though at the moment, so I'm going the used route. If I had the money, I'd definitely spring for an 18-135WR and get a few primes for the low light stuff.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I ended up ordering a K-30 in crystal blue (body only), should be here hopefully by Friday, can hardly wait! Yes, could have gotten a K-50 (used) for about the same price (new only slightly more), but the K-30's styling and metallic colors really do it for me.

I'm now looking into lenses from the usual pre-owned sources, as I'm on a budget. :) So far I have on order a 28mm F2.8 and a 100mm F3.5 macro. I definitely want to get an 18-55mm WR for wet weather shooting (otherwise known as 'Not Summer' in the Seattle area most years), and am considering a 50mm F1.7. I also want a zoom with a 200-300mm reach, but that can wait for summer airshow season. There seem to be lots of options in that category when you discount the need for WR.

Cheers!

Hi everyone! I've been a long time lurker here, first time poster. I have been lusting after a Pentax DSLR for at least a couple years, specially the K-30 or K-50, though I've been an amateur digital photographer for the past 12 or so years. It's a bit boggling that I haven't yet acquired a DSLR, with how much I use my cameras, and how inexpensive they are compared to some of my other hobbies and yearly expenditures.

I've progressed through various forms of digital cameras, including a Fujifilm Finepix 1300 (yes, that's 1.3 MP!), Casio QV-3000EX, Konica Minolta Z10, Panasonic DMC-FZ28, and an Olympus XZ-1. I can't say that any have really given me total satisfaction, though all have given me some really great pictures. I still have all of them except the Fuji and the Panasonic, with the Olympus being my primary at the moment. They all have their drawbacks, such that I'd take a few steps forward but always at least one step back with each new camera. I'm not afraid of a little weight and size, in fact I prefer that to a box of playing cards with a lens attached. I had to add a grip and lens extension tube to my XZ-1 just to make it work well in my hands. It's hard to believe that the prices on the K-50 are now just barely more than what I paid for the DMC-FZ28 and XZ-1.

Anyhow, can't say for sure when I'll be picking up my Pentax, or which model it will be, but will report back later!

Cheers,

Aaron
