i tried to get creative with this one, i know i made a few mistakes by leaving too much obscuring the lens and there are issues with the general image when it comes to quality since i had to rebuild the image outright without any reference images in order to get a better position of the subject, thus the photo is made out of 4 images cropped together along with a bunch of healing tool.

In terms of things in front of the subject for DOF, information on how to more effectively utilize obstructions would be great so that in the future i can more effectively use the environment or get a little creative with perspective.

I will also add that with this shoot i only used manual focus since according to what i was told, the K5 has bad auto-focus sensors. changing to Manual focus greatly improved my image quality in terms of sharpness but also how i framed my images as well since it allowed for more flexibility when it comes to whats in frame without affecting focus.

In November of 2019 my sister and I were planning our trip to Newfoundland in June of 2020. I was going to shoot my passport photo myself. Then my daughter mentioned that Walgreens did them. From showing up at the store to walking out with two photos took less than ten minutes, and was very inexpensive.

So I pay to be on this dating site, but so many posing "girls" that probably aren't

I don't have any experience of dating websites, Michael, but from everything I've heard and read, most are frequented by considerable numbers of scammers, and some sites are even run by them. They're looking to prey on folks who are vulnerable because their desire to meet someone is so strong that they desperately want to believe the scammers are genuine.

I agree with Sandy that all or part of that photo is created using image manipulation tools (perhaps AI). If you look at each letter on the "hand written" sheet, every occurence of an "e", "a" and "m" look exactly the same. No-one writes like that - there are always so many tiny variances in each letter. At the very least, the girl in the photo was holding up a blank sheet of paper and others are taking that image and writing whatever they want on the paper using Photoshop, GIMP, or some AI tool... EDIT: ... and now that you've sent the scammer a photo of you holding a piece of paper with writing on it, they can use that image to scam someone looking for a male partner... they'll just clone out the writing and replace it with whatever they like :o

It's not my place to advise what you should and shouldn't do, but I can't help thinking you're throwing good money after bad in paying to use a site like that (probably most dating sites, for that matter), and I worry for your safety and security. That money could instead pay for access to regional group social activities and events where you'd get to meet people face-to-face and build friendships - which might grow into something more over time...

Good luck, and please be careful :o

It's finally over. A story of being determined.

This is just a little story I'm going to tell you. I wrote it out on FB so I am just going to copy from there.

It's finally over.

I know most of you will not know of what I am talking about, but let me tell you of a story that is finally solved.
It started one morning 14 years ago, when I was at Walmart and I find a memory card in the parking lot. I asked at the service desk and in electronics but nobody has reported a lost memory card. So I bring it home.

I put it in my computer to see what was on it. The card had photos and a short video of a new born in a hospital in Icu. I knew the parents would be sad at loosing these photos. I started my search.

Jump to 2015. I was looking through my memory cards to see what was on them. So I looked through this card again. That is when I realized in 2 of the photos, there was a dry wipe board with a name on it. A full name. I had a clue to work with and the baby was a girl.

I found nothing at first.

Then I had a thought. And I was hopping I would find nothing, but I checked for an obituary. Sadly, I found one. I ended up contacting the funeral home but in the end they were not much of help. So that fizzled out.

Ended up putting the memory card away. Everything went into storage.

Jump to October 1st 2022. Me and my youngest son Kyle Edington went over to storage in the afternoon to try and find some things. We found the bookcase I was look for. In the process of looking on the bookcase, I find the memory card. I happen to say to Kyle, "I would like to solve this". Kyle is on a page here on FB that is called The Greenfield Gabber. Kyle found and posted my post from 2015 to the Greenfield Gabber. Now this shows how good FB can be. Within 2 hours of posting my old post, Kyle was texting with the parents of the little girl.

At about 12:30 today, October 2ed, I was able to give the memory card of photos of their little girl that had passed away back to the parents.

I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything. Just telling the story of a set of photos I found and how I was able to get them back to the parents.

Abstract Hot Bulbs

This is a proof of concept based on a video I saw recently. The shot was setup using a 200 watt incandescent bulb, a mirror, and a sparkler. The mirror was laid flat, a blob of granddaughters play dough was used to set the bulb upright in and a blob of the same stuff used to mount the sparkler directly behind. You want the sparkler fairly close for this, but not touching. For anyone who might try this, I have a couple of suggestions. First the sparkler I used was one of the large multi-color ones (only thing we still had left), the powder was inside a tube taped to a stick. The problem with it was it changed to much during the burn both in color and intensity, second the sparks it kicked out always went to one side. If I were to do it again, I'd use the plain wire sparklers as they throw out a more uniform cone of sparks. Second, don't use a cheap mirror from Walmart. Apparently they're not glass, so I now have divots in the mirror from the sparks.

Other then that it was pretty straight forward. I used manual focus to set the focal point on the bulb element. I had to play around a little to get the exposure. I basically started off with the aperture at f/11, then played with the shutter till I got an almost black image, with just some hints of the bulb. Once I started I opted to change the aperture to f/13, for a little deeper DOF. Final was shot at f/13, ISO 100, 1.6. All in all it was quick, fun little project.

The last Qantas 747 leaves Canberra
by RobGeraghty, on Flickr

Qantas 747-400 VH-OEJ "Wunala Dreaming".

The aircraft was the 57th and last 747 delivered to Qantas by Boeing, completing its ferry flight on the 17th of August 2003, so it has had 17 years of flying with Qantas. Today was its last flight carrying paying passengers. On Wednesday the 22nd of July, it will fly out of Sydney to the USA and eventually a new owner. :(

Travel Color against darkness

Housekeeping at the pool bar after hours. Shot this as a light rain was falling, just after sunset. Most of the guests had left the pool, so it was quiet and dark. The RAW image appeared under-exposed in the histograms, but the highlights were there. I like the strength of the blue and it's contrast against the darkness. The thatch roof above the young lady is only implied by the fringe of grasses hanging down. The Philippines is loaded with surprise photo opportunities such as this. That's why I always have my Pentax handy.

Guys, I've been getting some complaints from users who are experiencing disruptions in their browsing experience due to a flood of posts, mostly in the photo-sharing sections. While I'm excited by the enthusiasm and increased level of participation, I'd like to ask everyone to refrain from posting just to raise that progress bar :)

"Brute forcing" the counter is definitely not in the spirit of the giveaway, and while it hadn't been an issue in prior months, I may add a cap on spikes in activity if we continue receiving such feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Tom, I gave it a lot of thought before posting those photos for fear that some might find it offensive. If that is the case, I sincerely apologize.... but, it was part of the life you and I and many other vets lived. It was an extremely sad event..... one of many I was exposed to and some were far more gruesome than what is shown there. As a Navy combat photographer, you're called on to take photos of things that are more than most people can imagine. I won't go into details, but it's things that I relive in my dreams on a regular basis.... and it's been that way for over 50 years. Until you've been there, you can't possibly imagine the horrors of war. I'm still trying to make sense of it all.

Suggestion Ban "Net To Me" Marketplace Posts
Posted By germar
Replies: 33

The use of "net to me" wording in the marketplace, in my opinion, creates misleading sale posts and creates unneeded confusion among prospective buyers. It is basically false advertising, because the seller posts the item at a price that he won't actually accept. This sends a negative message about the marketplace and the sellers that frequent here.

This whole "net to me" business started when there was a glut of K-7 bodies on the marketplace and someone got the wise idea of posting a lowball price based on stripping away the Paypal charge. It is now a gotcha that bucks the rules of Paypal and credit charges in general, that the merchant pays the fees, not the seller.

I think the marketplace community would be a friendlier, more upstanding place if the "net to me" pricing bait and switch trick is officially frowned upon by the PF community.

Thanks,

Germar
